Owens will not run for Colorado Senate seat

Just to update an earlier post, Colorado Gov. Bill Owens (R) announced this afternoon that he will not run for the Senate (via the Political Wire).

This makes some sense. Owens, despite some family troubles of late, has presidential aspirations for 2008. He probably concluded, accurately, that it would be easier to mount a White House campaign as a popular governor in Colorado than a sitting senator in Washington.

Nevertheless, today’s announcement will create a wide-open race on both sides. Republicans who were willing to step aside for Owens will now jump in the race. Democrats who may have been hesitant to challenge the governor are far more likely to run in a race with no clear favorite.

It’s bound to be a fun one.
