Powell seems confused

One can criticize the Bush White House for circumventing the law and creating a warrantless-search program, or one can defend the administration and conclude that the president has the authority. But leave it to Colin Powell to do both.

Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said on Sunday that it would not have been “that hard” for President Bush to obtain warrants for eavesdropping on domestic telephone and Internet activity, but that he saw “nothing wrong” with the decision not to do so.

“My own judgment is that it didn’t seem to me, anyway, that it would have been that hard to go get the warrants,” Mr. Powell said. “And even in the case of an emergency, you go and do it. The law provides for that.”

But Mr. Powell added that “for reasons that the president has discussed and the attorney general has spoken to, they chose not to do it that way.”

“I see absolutely nothing wrong with the president authorizing these kinds of actions,” he said.

Powell at first seems comfortable joining the chorus of conservative critics who believe Bush exceeded his authority. The White House could have followed the law and asked for warrants, Powell noted, even in an emergency. As Powell told ABC, there was “another way to handle it.” These aren’t the comments of an enthusiastic supporter.

Second, Powell takes a position that, while not the polar opposite, is certainly at odds with the first point. Bush could have easily requested a warrant and followed the rule of law, but, Powell concludes, it’s just fine that he didn’t.

Maybe Powell is trying to make nice with his former administration colleagues after rejecting the White House line on torture, or maybe Powell is grudgingly taking on the role of good soldier (again). But this is one controversy where it’s awfully difficult for anyone, even Powell, to play both sides of the fence.

Fuck Powell.

And a belated Happy Holidays to everyone.

  • One has to wonder if someone in the Bush administration has something on Powell, something so hurtful it that could force someone even as intelligent and courageous as Powell to play Bush’s poodle when required? I know it sounds crazy, but frankly I just can’t think of any other reason why he keeps doing this kind of thing. Unless he really isn’t as intelligent or courageous as I’ve always considered him to be. I’d hate to think that was the case. I just don’t understand, and I’d very much like to.

  • People say that Bush is a decent man, as are the others in his administration, and that we shouldn’t think that they are “bad” or don’t have the best interest of the country in their hearts.

That ain’t me. I do not attribute goodness or patriotis to these bums. Bushco, in it’s entirety, is packed full of sell out sycophants who have no other objective save to rape and pillage America for their own benefit.

Powell is chief among the sellouts, IMHO, ’cause HE KNEW HE WAS TALKIN’ BULLSHIT AT THE U.N. and decided it was to his advantage to sell his soul to Bush. I, therefore, DON’T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT HIS OPINION AT ALL.

  • Bill Arnett–Agreed wholeheartedly. IMHO, the person who has lost the most from his or her association with this Sadministration is Powell, head and shoulders above all others. Prior to 2000 he was respected by both parties and positioned to be a big player in American policy for many, many years to come, with a realistic and considerable chance to lead the country. All that potential is likely right down the terlet now. He gambled on the wrong group and lost big. At times I think that this may have been intentionally inflicted on Powell by BushCo and Co. Regardless, fuck Powell.

  • This ass was once the most admired politician in America, he blew that when he sold that bullshit bill of goods about those tractor-trailers in Iraq, what he erroneously said the purpose of the trucks was. He should just go away……………………..

  • Leopards don’t change their spots. Powell and his protege Condi always were and always will be nothing more than the Bush family house “negroes”.

  • From My Lai to the U.N., Colin Powell has been a doormat for GOP Administrations. Such positioning comes from his uncanny sense of place with, and affinity for, the Rebublican sole.

  • Powell and mcCain — a couple of long-time soldiers that, due to various applications of torture (McCain by the North Vietnamese and Powell by his service to Bush), are now just simply lost souls who have are still wandering the Earth in search of their integrity.

The world would be a better place if we never heard from either one again, as the brown stains on their noses (always stuck up the asses of their masters) and the semen on their faces (from always sucking Bush’s dick) is just too unsightly for public discourse. Just two more examples of Rethug whores.
