Romney takes the low road

It’s likely my standards are low, but I’ve been relatively pleased that the presidential race has featured very little talk about the Lewinsky scandal. Going into the race, I was a little worried the media would be preoccupied with this nonsense, and Republican candidates, anxious to score cheap points, would make hay of the decade-old controversy.

By and large, that hasn’t happened. But leave it to Mitt Romney to take the low road.

“We’ll try and represent ourselves and our nation well also to our kids because I think, I think kids watch the White House and there have been failures in the past in the White House — if you go back to the Clinton years and recognize that — that I think had an enormous impact on the culture of our country,” Romney said. “And we’ll do our very best, our whole family will to — well, if we can’t be perfect, we’ll do our best to uphold and to be a good example for the kinds of values I think people expect from our leaders.”

Wow, that sure is dumb.

The Lewinsky scandal had an “enormous impact” undermining American culture? Seriously?

This is actually the second time Romney has given up on decency and emphasized this, the first coming in October when the former governor said, “One of the ways that you help instill, if you will, family values is by having a White House be a place that demonstrates family values. And, you know, I think during the last Clinton presidency, the White House did not demonstrate that in a way that was helpful to our nation’s character.”

This strikes me as misguided, for a few reasons.

First, I haven’t seen any polling data on this, but I really doubt voters still care about the Lewinsky scandal a decade later. Indeed, there was scant evidence voters cared about the scandal at the time. If anyone looks bad 10 years after the fact, it’s the Republican attack machine that launched an absurd impeachment crusade.

Second, I have no idea why anyone would go after Hillary Clinton because of Bill Clinton’s mistake. Maybe a few far-right activists will find Romney’s rhetoric appealing, but I doubt this will give him much of a boost.

And third, if Romney really wants to go after a rival candidate over “family values,” he’s picked the wrong target. Indeed, the first two admitted adulterers to ever seek a major party presidential nomination are Rudy Giuliani and John McCain — both of whom are seeking the GOP nomination. Is this some kind of bank-shot attack? If it is, it’s awfully clunky.

I can appreciate the fact that Romney is in a tough spot right now, but gratuitous references to Clinton scandals in the 1990s only make him look desperate and classless.

Social conservatives and Republicans DO CARE about Lewinsky, and are still bitter about it, how Bill “soiled” our culture.

Of course, their votes don’t matter to us. But prudes do remember.

  • I would think that if Mittie wanted to after public officials who debased our culture, he’d go after Larry Craig, David Vitter, Mark Foley, those state senators in Washington and Florida who troll for gay sex, and so on and so on. But I guess IOKIYAR.

  • Unfortunately, the kind of Republican voters this Moron, er, I mean Mormon, is going after do indeed still obsess over the Lewinsky scandal (since they all fantasize in their dirty little minds about getting a blowjob from their daughter, or failing that, a girl as young as their daughter – we are talking about an “inbred” culture here after all)

  • I hate to defend Romney, but he’s not targeting Hillary with this. He’s just saying “in the past we had a candidate, Clinton, who was a poor model. I’m going to be a good model if I’m elected.”

That’s not an attack on any current candidate. It’s primarily a way for him to express how he promises to behave as the president. I think his claim that it had an “enormous impact” is stupid, but the rest of his quotes smell fine to me.

  • As long as he doesn’t dig up the White House grounds looking for gold tablets. It was okay to have to replace the divots on the White House lawn after golfer Ike got through with it, but mass excavations are going to be problematic.

Maybe Mitt mentioned Clinton in particular so people wouldn’t assume that he was talking about the Bush daughters, the lying Bush/Cheney and Mitt’s own cowardly pro-war kids.

  • So basically Romney is saying he’s the only major Republican’t candidate who won’t bring personal dishonor to the White House?

Almost believeable. Though what Mike Huckabee is accused of I haven’t heard. 😉

Still, I’d think the seven years of national dishonor BGII has brought to the White House and America would matter a lot more.

  • I’m sure the average wingnut thinks Clinton’s penis is still really important, seeing as they have so little to commend their own party for. Forget Iraq, the economy, health care, and all the other issues. Vote for Mitt, because he won’t get any BJs from anyone other than his wife (which he only has one of).

Pander all you want, Mitt, those people have been brainwashed by their cult to think you’re a cult member and they’ll stay home on election day unless you’re up against Satan herself. If that happens there will be a lot of coin tossing.

  • “enormous impact”

I don’t know about anyone else, but i certainly wasn’t thinking about Bill & Monica until Romney mentioned it — and now I can’t get it off my mind! Seriously though, the only “enormous impact” of that fiasco was that (1) it made the 00 election close enough that BushCo could steal it, and (2) it poisoned the impeachment process, reducing it to electoral defeat by other means, thus giving Bush a bye. Dozens of byes.

  • Re: #4. I hate to defend Romney, but…

Then don’t! It was an attack on Hillary. It was scurrilous, unprovoked and most assuredly self-rightous drivel.
Bill Clinton was a poor role model? When a majority of marriages end in a rancorous divorce? I’m guessing that a few of those divorces were as a result of someone being unfaithful. Bill and HIllary apparently sat down and decided the best thing to do is get over it and go on. I would call that something to emulate.
If Mitt has never had a moral lapse, perhaps President isn’t a lofty enough aspiration.
Look, any one of the Democratic candidates is by definition morally superior to Mitt and the rest of this list of hypocritic, greedy, lying, war-mongering, bought and paid for cretans on the Republican ticket.

  • “Nobody suffers more than my husband and I”… about this war and the deaths of these soldiers . Every night before we go to be….family values crap. Romney has a lot of nerve when I’m ashamed to explain to my children all the lies and corruption coming out of this WH that has gotten millions killed and displaced.

I had to explain that OBL has been dead since 2001 and Sadam had nothing to do with 9/11 and why this administration keeps getting away with breaking the law with signing statements and saying no to investigations. Illegal wiretapping…torture….no habeas corpus. Family values from these repukes is pure hypocrisy. Teaching my children not to be anything like them and what the WH should be like is as close as family values can get to this republican rule for the past 12 yrs.

  • Ah, but what you fail to understand is that Mitt is just trying to innoculate himself because he’s actually having an affair with Monica Lewinsky. But he’s planning to marry her in the Mormon tradition, so it’s still a family values thing. I wasn’t supposed to mention any of this, as Mitt planned to drop the bomb the night before the Iowa caucus; so try to act surprised.

BTW, I’d guess that this was intended to hurt the other Republican candidates, who he probably didn’t want to mention specifically.

  • Promising to not get any on the side while President really doesn’t mean anything. I doubt very much Dubya’s been been unfaithful while in the White House. That doesn’t make him a good role model.

  • I don’t like Hilary and maybe I’m a fool for saying this but… I bet she won’t have any tawdry scandalous affairs if she becomes president.

What the hell is Romney’s POINT?

He does know WHICH Clinton he’d be facing, right?

I betcha Hilary isn’t even having SEX for four years if she wins, much less an affair.

  • romney goes to prove that there are people out there who’ll vote for someone based solely on their ‘country club’ looks even tho behind the facade is a lyin’ sack of slime.

  • but locking that dog on the roof of the car for 12 hours, now thats a shining example of humanity. . .

  • Cheryl (Re #13) – We don’t know about Jeff Gannon for sure, but I guess that Bush (or Rove) didn’t get any “on the side.”
In the end (whoops!), the current White House could be keeping sex slaves of all ages and manner in the basement, and if the press walked in on an S & M orgy, wouldn’t breathe a word of it.
    National Security, y’know.

  • Oh look. Another GOPer who uses PROTECT THE CHILDREN as an excuse to talk dirty.

During Clenisgate if my youngest sister was in the room my mom would change the channel if the news ran another item about the infamous blue dress. My little sister grew up in relative ignorance of the Presidential Penis because my mom (a dirty hippy librul uppity female if there ever was one) was a responsible parent who thought my youngest sister was a little young to hear about blow jobs. Left to her own devices, sis didn’t watch the news because she was a kid.

So Romney is creating the imaginary endangered child. This figment of his imagination has no problems except his mom and dad talk about the President’s Schlong in front of him or sit him down in front of the TV while the news is chattering about the President’s Wang. Of course it’s too much to expect mom and dad to shut up or change the channel. Evil DemoncRATs forced them to expose their kids to blow jobs.

  • the BEAST’S take on Romney: 50 Most Loathsome People in America, 2007

    37. Mitt Romney

Charges: America’s first clip-art presidential candidate, Romney is a strange mixture of game show host looks and android charm. A true flip-flopper, Romney’s ability to turn on an ideological dime is unparalleled, but his excuses are so inauthentic that even Republicans have trouble suspending their disbelief.

Exhibit A: “You can’t have freedom without religion, and you can’t have religion without freedom.”

Sentence: Strapped to the roof of his family car, which his dog attempts to drive across the country, but crashes horribly (because dogs can’t drive, of course). Romney’s flesh burns off in the ensuing fire, revealing him to be a standard protocol droid set to world domination mode. Narrowly edged out of primary race by Huckabee.

  • “…that I think had an enormous impact on the culture of our country…”

The trick here is in the ionterpretation of “our country” which, in Romney’s mind, means Headupyerassizstan. That country is definitely growing within the US.

  • Now why would Mitt say these things:

    A) His campaign is in a tail spin

    B) He has questionable morals of his own — misdirect

    C) It’s the Republican thing to do

    D) All the above

  • Re #21

    E) He is trying to get us to forget the last seven year of Republican’t incompent rule and focus back on Bill.

  • Is this some kind of bank-shot attack?

    (with nod to Atrios): Yes.

Its an attack on McCain with a secondary benefit of blowing the Clinton dog whistle. This is about Romney doing anything to win New Hampshire.

  • BClinton’s history of philandering started WAY before the White House, ask ANY Arkansas resident.
HClinton’s rationale for staying with him was purely political .. not family based.

2008 is going to be the year that we REALLY have nothing but garbage to choose from. WHO is REALLY electable? Seriously.

Clinton with all her real estate scandals, etc. Her connection with George Soros, a gentleman that makes his money “betting” on a countries demise. Her double-talk and basically socialist/communist idealism, ie. the drivers license issue for illegals for ONE of many. Why are her White House records sealed? Why are her Yale records sealed? Embarassed about the past? Like to take back some of that rhetoric?
Obama? smooth talk and good looks doesnt sell in government, also too polarizing. I cant believe how often I have heard the N word IN PUBLIC since his rise to national attention .. oh, wait, yes I have, on HBOs Def Comedy Jam !!
McCain? Please .. a liberal in Republicans clothing; respect the service to the country, but he’s not a leader that ANY conservative would want
Rudy? Yo G, New York don’t sell west of the Pocono and north of Boca Raton ..
Huck(ster)bee? We dont need a comedian in the White House, GB2 has been a joke for REAL conservatism to last the rest of my life; and, common sense talk for the dumb doesn’t play off the farm

Before you throw me under the bus as a GOP’r .. I resent that. I am a social and fiscal CONSERVATIVE .. both parties are so similar these days they should be called Republicrats .. I vote my conscious on issues, not on polls or party lines.

In 2008 it seems to me that if things arent going well for you, you will vote Democrat because they make these promises of taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Well, you can give all you want, but all that teaches is resentment to those who are giving. Teach a man to fish and you feed him a lifetime. Moral: Get off your rear end and make something of yourself.

Of the crap we have to choose from, Mitt Romney is probably the best of the lot.
Everything the guy has touched has been golden. Why not the US Govt? Maybe because that is an impossibility due to our political correctness, and party division.

I wish everyone well, and the success of our country the best in this flawed system that is still the best in the world.
