Rumsfeld’s media criticism

Last month, [tag]Donald Rumsfeld[/tag] criticized much the national discussion about deteriorating conditions in Iraq, concluding in a WaPo op-ed, “Fortunately, history is not made up of daily headlines, blogs on Web sites or the latest sensational attack.”

It wasn’t a new tack for the Defense Secretary, who seems to relish his role as “media critic.” But Rumsfeld took this tack to a surprising level yesterday, while chatting with — who else? — Rush Limbaugh.

“There have always been people who have opposed wars…I think we just have to accept it, that people have a right to say what they want to say, and to have an acceptance of that and recognize that the terrorists, Zarqawi and bin Laden and Zawahiri, those people have media committees.

“They are actively out there trying to manipulate the press in the United States. They are very good at it.”

These are some remarks that call out for some follow-up. It certainly sounded like Rumsfeld believes that those in the national [tag]media[/tag] who cast the war effort in a negative light are somehow cooperating with the agenda of [tag]terrorists[/tag].

Are all critics of the war, in Rumsfeld’s mind, under the sway of al Queda? Or just those journalists who report on the latest violence?

If these comments came from some far-right blogger, they’d be disturbing. The fact that they came from the Secretary of Defense demands some kind of explanation.

Isn’t it nice of the man who has killed over 2000 American servicemen to acknowledge that even treasonable reporters and bloggers have free speech rights?

  • I don’t think you mean “demands some kind of explanation;” we all know the explanation, such as it is: rummy is a demented asshole.

i think you mean “demands the spineless wimps who dominate our political discourse might at least stir themselves to notice that our pathetic excuse for a defense secretary believes that any criticism of our excellent adventure in iraq must be terrorist-inspired, proving that he’s even dumber than we think.”

not that we expect the spineless wimps who dominate our political discourse to say any such thing….

  • Yeah, not like the current administration isnt actively out there trying to manipulate the press in the United States…

  • A few thoughts on the likes of Rumsfeld from some politicians who know what they’re talking about:

“Criticism in time of war is essential to the maintenance of any kind of democratic government…. The maintenance of the right of criticism
in the long run will do the country… more good than it will do the enemy [who might draw comfort from it], and it will prevent mistakes which might otherwise occur.”
Senator Robert A. Taft, two weeks after Pearl Harbor,

”To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
    – Theodore Roosevelt

”Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”
    GEORGE ORWELL
    “Politics and the English Language”

The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands whether of one, a few or many, and whether hereditary, self appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.
    James Madison “Federalist No. 47″

”Naturally, the common people don’t want war. But, after all it’s the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”
    – Herman Goering atNuremberg, 1946

  • Tom Cleaver (CB, too) shows the difference between those who are read and those who are listened to (Russ Limbaugh)!

Thoughtful analysis presented with supporting evidence.

Of course, one can also derive the character of those who read versus those who only listen.

  • “They are actively out there trying to manipulate the press in the United States. They are very good at it.”

I guess that we can infer from Rumsfeld’s comment here that the illegal wiretaps aren’t effective at catching terrorist operations after all. Or maybe we could look at things from the other side of the coin. Since Rumsfeld is part of the largest terrorist group in the world, the bushistas, the statement might be true.

  • OK, this is kind of funny, too. I’m just imagining the members of the respective “media committees” calling correspondents and reporters and saying: “You might find this interesting … Iraq is now in a civil war. The streets will flow with the blood of the American infidel dogs. Rummy should resign. I’ll send you a press release. Would you like to schedule an interview?” And of course the media — the same media that took it’s cues from the White House in the run up to Iraq — now accepts this without question.

I know I should be outraged, but stuff like this just makes me guffaw out loud.

  • What the fuck? Pacifists, peace activists, motherfucking [i]Quakers[/i] are now working for the terrorists?

I guess now we understand why these people have been spied on by our government, particularly by the military: Rumsfeld actually believes those groups are actually working for the terrorists. Now he’s just finally come out and said it.

I said it once before today, but I’m at a loss for any other sort of response to this as well:

    Whiskey

    Tango

    Foxtrot?

  • I actually think Rummy’s right. A media committee of himself, Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Feith and others have been using the media to make Zawahiri and bin Laden look like heroes around the world and to damage US prestige and moral authority. It’s his own bit of puffery to admit that he’s good at it.

All Rummy’s talk of dead-enders, armies you have vs. tarmies you’d wish to have and turning yet another corner have done so much to alienate the US public by now that I’d like to look at his bank statement to see if the checks from bin Laden cleared yet.

  • And the retired generals who demand Rumsfeld’s resignation are also being manipulated by the terrorists. Right, Rummy?

  • Sounds like he’s saying they are the media committees. After all they are the ones talking to the press.

  • Again Rumsfeld is doing his job, the media including us are whining and moaning and crying about his leadership which is 100% which he is giving to United States of America. Anyone in his position would be under pressure, George W Bush is under pressure aswell because of Iran. At least Iraq is beginning to look safer, slowly but surely Iraq will be free and Saddam is long forgotton I presume by the people who he abused.

  • American generals are like bin Laden and Zawahiri. The media is like al Jazeera. It’s all so obvious.

I’m surprised Rummy hasn’t produced a list of homosexuals and jihadis who have infiltrated the army.

  • prm: The insurgents in Iraq do send out press releases, usually together with a snuff film. Or rather, the snuff film is the press release. Both the Americans and the insurgency are playing the same game of killing their opponents and publicising these operations, in an attempt to affect (mainly) US and Iraqi public opinion. And meanwhile, Iraqi society is breaking apart, due to the efforts of both the insurgency and the US…

  • This comment says it all for me!
“The secretary of defense (and Dumbya) does not command the respect and confidence of our men and women in uniform.”

–Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), quoted by the Lincoln Journal Star, on Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld

  • Do they really think that if the press reported a false, rosy-scenario, the situation in Iraq would improve?
