Samuel Alito thanks James Dobson personally

During his confirmation process, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito kept an arms-length distance between himself and any of the controversial figures in the GOP base. After Karl Rove’s controversial phone call to James Dobson about Harriet Miers, this was especially true about the controversial Focus on the Family chief.

But now that Alito is on the court, he feels free to communicate with Dobson directly and thank him for all the support.

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson said new Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito sent him a thank-you letter for support during his Senate confirmation hearings.

Dobson said Wednesday in his radio broadcast that Alito’s letter thanked him and his listeners.

Indeed, I’ve obtained a transcript of today’s broadcast in which Dobson read the letter to his listeners.

Dear Dr. Dobson,

This is just a short note to express my heartfelt thanks to you and the entire staff of Focus on the Family for your help and support in the past few challenging months. I would also greatly appreciate it if you would convey my appreciation to the good people from all parts of the country who wrote to tell me that they were praying for me and for my family during this period.

As I said when I spoke at my formal investiture at the White House last week, the prayers from so many people from around the country were a palpable and powerful force. As long as I serve on the Supreme Court, I will keep in mind the trust that has been placed in me.

I hope that we will have the opportunity to meet personally at some point in the future. In the meantime, my entire family and I hope that you and the Focus on the Family staff know how much we appreciate all that you have done.

Why is a Supreme Court justice corresponding with the bizarre head of religious right organization? Because if it weren’t for Dobson and his cohorts, Alito might not have ever been nominated.

These right-wing groups are growing like a cancer over this nation. The same people are picking up the disenfranchised and homeless; giving them shelter and work. They offer a safety net for the poor government no longer provides. There are thousands springing up all over this nation. In return for subsistance the poor serve the interests of the church.

Recognize there is now a Christian flag for members (and their children) to salute. These people are very dangerous, and Samuel Alito was the last nail in the coffin of our republic. People no longer have recourse to the courts. The corrupt have us in a stranglehold.

We now have a one party government controlled by special interests who are plundering this nation. We sell off our ports because of our debt level to the Arabs, yet cut more taxes for the wealthy. What will it take for people to wake up?

    Thanks is not necessary, just your unfailing obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ. As you know, His will can only be known by listening regularly to our broadcasts of Focus on the Family.

    I suggest the following:

    RIGHT-WING CHRISTIAN TALIBAN

    That is an incredibly puissant phrase.

    It resonates.
    It frames.
    It demonizes.

    Sort of like calling a liberal… a liberal.

  • Looking back, it would have been nice to see the Democrats and left-leaning organizations take more of serious OPPOSITIONAL stand. Serious opposition research and a strategy to block his confirmation before the hearings? Are you kidding? It’s too close to the holidays! A meaningful, substantive confirmation hearing where Democrats grill the weasel mercilessly? Not with Joe Biden’s grandstanding! A serious party-wide filibuster effort? Nope! Noth with Byrd, Lieberman and other “moderate” Democrats on board.

    Was there any ever doubt what Justice Alito was going to be like? Or who he would be beholden to? It’s not like there was a paper trail stretching back a few decades to give liberals a clue as to what to expect. The Democrats are also to blame, and we have to live with the consequences.

  • But, actually, couldn’t this letter be a good thing all around? I mean, this, theoretically, should be enough to make him recuse himself from any case which Dobson and Co. have a hand in- and, when he doesn’t recuse himself, it gives good talking points to the Left.

    I need more evidence that this purported letter from Alito is for real.

  • How much more evidence do you need that it is real?

    Dobson read it on his radio program today and the Supreme Court spokesperson confirmed that Alito had sent it.

  • “It is inartful, it is clumsy, it is a poor choice of language, it is unfortunate, but I think we have to give Justice Alito the benefit of the doubt,” NYU Law Professor Gillers said, commenting on the note.

    I say, this note sounds like it was written by Harriet Miers.

    In the context of this note, these words sound more like a quid pro quo than an unfortunately word choice. It truly is a shame we will be giving this guy the benefit of the doubt, because I dont think he deserves it.

  • Mr. Justice Alito owes nothing to the Liberal Tendency that pollutes the social discourse within these Untied States. His Religious Faith, according to the First Amendment, is his own business, a matter of interest to the Deity he peacefully and privately worships and the clergymen he consults or admires. The Bigots, on the Senate Judiciary Committee and their Enablers among the Electorate, who sought to establish, in violation of the First Amendment’s prohibition, a “Religious Test” for a High Office in the Government of these United States, are guilty of a shameful act that tarnishes to the lustre of that shining beacon of freedom that has beckoned the persecuted and oppressed believers to seek liberty and solace on these welcoming shores where piety is, and will remain, an admired virtue. FOR SHAME, LIBERAL BIGOTS!

  • This is the danger of having someone on the court who does not enjoy wide support. There are the good guys who voted for him, and the bad guys who gave him a hard time. He’ll have a chip on his shoulder for his entire tenure on the court. Him and Thomas.

  • If having a learned and honest jurist, a Justice serving on the Supreme Court of these United States, is deemed a “danger”, then I fear for the future of the Republic. The Ghost Of Robert Bork will linger in the Halls Of Justice for centuries to come, until the stench of the Senior Senator Of The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts is finally washed from the Body Politic. Then civility and measure may be restored to our National Discourse.
