Scandal rocks Oral Roberts University

It’s been weeks since a prominent conservative institution has been rocked by scandal, so I suppose we were due for a story like this one.

Twenty years ago, televangelist Oral Roberts said he was reading a spy novel when God appeared to him and told him to raise $8 million for Roberts’ university, or else he would be “called home.”

Now, his son, Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts, says God is speaking again, telling him to deny lurid allegations in a lawsuit that threatens to engulf this 44-year-old Bible Belt college in scandal.

Richard Roberts is accused of illegal involvement in a local political campaign and lavish spending at donors’ expense, including numerous home remodeling projects, use of the university jet for his daughter’s senior trip to the Bahamas, and a red Mercedes convertible and a Lexus SUV for his wife, Lindsay.

She is accused of dropping tens of thousands of dollars on clothes, awarding nonacademic scholarships to friends of her children and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as “underage males.”

The university, which reported nearly $76 million in revenue as recently as 2005, is reeling, despite denials from the Roberts family, which insists the lawsuit filed by three former professors at the school is “about intimidation, blackmail and extortion.”

There’s no shortage of serious accusations, but clearly that “underage males” angle stands out. Apparently, Mrs. Roberts, a member of ORU’s board of regents, “frequently had cell-phone bills of more than $800 per month, with hundreds of text messages sent between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. to ‘underage males who had been provided phones at university expense.'”

The rest of the alleged improprieties are hardly any better.

* A longtime maintenance employee was fired so that an underage male friend of Mrs. Roberts could have his position.

* The university jet was used to take one daughter and several friends on a senior trip to Orlando, Fla., and the Bahamas. The $29,411 trip was billed to the ministry as an “evangelistic function of the president.”

* Mrs. Roberts spent more than $39,000 at one Chico’s clothing store alone in less than a year, and had other accounts in Texas and California. She also repeatedly said, “As long as I wear it once on TV, we can charge it off.” The document cites inconsistencies in clothing purchases and actual usage on TV.

* Mrs. Roberts was given a white Lexus SUV and a red Mercedes convertible by ministry donors.

* University and ministry employees are regularly summoned to the Roberts’ home to do the daughters’ homework.

* The university and ministry maintain a stable of horses for exclusive use by the Roberts’ children.

* The Roberts’ home has been remodeled 11 times in the past 14 years.

Lambert has more, including the observation, “[A]uthoritarian systems are extremely vulnerable to fraud, because authoritarian followers aren’t capable of providing checks and balances for their leaders.”

and sending scores of text messages on university-issued cell phones to people described in the lawsuit as “underage males.”

Wow, she’s getting to play teenager all over again.

hundreds of text messages sent between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. to ‘underage males who had been provided phones at university expense.’”

Or, something more than that. Wife-of-the-holy-roller red-state nympho?

  • Surely God doesn’t discriminate against women? Doesn’t He whisper in Mrs. Roberts’ ear too? Maybe the underage males thing comes (if you’ll pardon the term) from Him?

  • A longtime maintenance employee was fired so that an underage male friend of Mrs. Roberts could have his position.

Since we’re talking about an evangelical institution, the question does, of course, arise as to whether that was a missionary position.

  • Oral Roberts’ God is a terrorist. Oral told his TV audience in 1987 that if he didn’t raise $8 million by a certain deadline, God would “call him home.”

I’ve lived in Oral Roberts’ adopted home town of Tulsa, and this stuff has been going on for as long as I can remember. The new angle is the University’s involvement in partisan political campaigns at the direction of Richard Roberts, involving ORU professors and teams of students that they control.

When Oral was running things, he was never involved in politics or social issues. Their primary message was the “prosperity gospel,” which is another way of saying that God will reward you richly in the here-and-now for sending money to them. It’s obviously an effective message, because it has produced rivers of money.

If the IRS is doing its job, ORU will lose their tax-exempt status over this.

  • Sorry for being 12 years old. Oral. & Dick?

As for the rest. I’m not surprised. I doubt that the “donors” aka suckers wondered how the Roberts could live such a lavish lifestyle? Who paid for that? It’s why I don’t trust anyone wearing an expensive suit who asks for money.

Good for them. Tools. Sex, money, lies, corruption and extortion. Hee hee.

  • Excellent. I chortle in public places when those self appointed guardians of American morals appear in the newspapers, caught literally with their pants down. Bring me more.

  • Mrs. Roberts, a member of ORU’s board of regents, “frequently had cell-phone bills of more than $800 per month, with hundreds of text messages sent between 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. to ‘underage males who had been provided phones at university expense.”

Well, shame on her. Doesn’t she realize she could have gotten unlimited text messaging for like 10 or 20 bucks a month? Talk about being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

  • Let’s see. Mrs. Roberts has a TV program which is brought into new light with these recent revelations.

Lindsay Roberts is the host of Make Your Day Count, an uplifting half-hour daily program aimed especially at the needs of women

I wonder if she has discussed the need to get a much younger lover? Without one her day just wouldn’t count.

Some Fun Facts about ORU: Ted Hagdard and Kathie Lee Gifford are both alums.

Finally, any of you wondering what the Mrs Roberts looks like. Here is her picture

  • Oral Roberts’ God is a terrorist.

    Nah, just a blackmailer.

More like a huge tease. Why couldn’t He have taken Oral and held him until people raised the cash?

I can’t wait for Mrs. Robert[son]’s explanation for the TMs.

  • Evidently Oral Roberts honor code only applies to students:

“All students are required to sign a pledge stating they will live according to the university’s honor code. Prohibited activities include lying, cursing, smoking, drinking, gambling, and what school officials consider illicit sexual acts including homosexual behavior. In early 2004 the student dress code was greatly relaxed for the first time in forty years. Prior to that time, men were required to wear button-down shirts and ties, while women were required to wear skirts (with an exception for winter months added in 2000).

With the revised dress code, probably none of these poor students could afford to buy new clothes so Mr’s Roberts went out and bought something for everyone from Chico’s – what a kind and blessed woman.

  • “Underage males”? We’re talking about “university” kids. Most likely they’re 18 or over. I don’t know Oklahoma’s sexual age of consent, but I’d be surprised if many college guys would be under it. Unless the suit is about the preacher’s wife plying the poor young men with booze…

This is turning out to be a very good month. “Cocktober,” as Wonkette christened it!

  • VIOLATION OF TAX-EXEMPT STATUS!

Richard Roberts, according to the suit, asked a professor in 2005 to use his students and university resources to aid a county commissioner’s (Randi Miller) bid for Tulsa mayor. Such involvement would violate state and federal law because of the university’s nonprofit status. Up to 50 students are alleged to have worked on the campaign.

  • No doubt those messages were just pastoral counseling. The hours between 1 am and 3 am are prime hours of temptation for hot-blooded underage boys, so I’m sure she was merely advising them to abjure Satan and avoid their temptation toward carnal thoughts in the wee hours, especially the image of her in those jeans from Chico, driving the red convertible.

    No doubt.

Her husband was connected to the University, but that doesn’t mean the males are. She just gave them U. phones. From my reading of Carpetbagger’s excerpts, it seems like these were her daughter’s friends, who she befriended. I doubt the article would get it wrong that they were underage, but you can follow the link and see which sources they quote (probably police, in which case I trust their use of the word).

  • She just gave them U. phones. — Swan, @20

That, in itself, would have been bad enough. But the burning question is: what *else* did she give them??? So, OK, 1-3AM was for “counseling” (they couldn’t have been students; students need their sleep, unless they’re in the exam session)… What about the rest of the day?

There’s also the question of illegal, child labour practices:
    * A longtime maintenance employee was fired so that an underage male friend of Mrs. Roberts could have his position.

I’m surprised though, that someone named “Oral” (better than “Anal” I suppose, but not by a whole lot), and/or any of his spawn (how???) was able to get that much money from people who claim to care about “family values”. I mean…. Really…

  • I’m tired of these TV Ministries begging for money so they can live a
lavish lifestyle. Is the Robert’s so special that God only speaks to them.
I’ve never read nor heard that God would say, make more money or I’m going
to take your life. Are they sure Satan isn’t talking to them.
If they really believe the Bible, The Lord when he was on this earth
he never went around begging for money. He helped people and loved
them never took advantage of anyone. I wish people would stop giving
to these types of people and put their money in a savings for their own
lifestyle. People like this should be ashamed and get out and work
and stop begging other people for money. What a scam they should
    be very ashamed of themselves.

  • If all of these allegations are true, nobody will be more appalled and dissapointed than Christians. When a Christian leader sins in this way, the ramifications effect every other person under his organizational authority to include employees and students. Indeed, Christianity, at large gives a collective sigh and says “Not again.” The Bible is quite clear about the enormous responsibility and accountability that spiritual leaders are held to. The allegations, themselves, are enough to dishearten and embitter believers and non-believers alike. What saddens me more, however, is to watch how quickly and violently the carcass of his sullied character is mauled, again and again and again with glee, unbridled vitriol and utter contempt. My concern is separate from his guilt or innocence. For me, it is a draws a sharp contrast between two modes of thought. One is rooted in the world: it relies on reciprocity and justice. It accuses and tears down. It keeps perfect score of the wrongs of others and seeks to recieve payment for injuries past. Every last ounce of payback is accounted for. It leaves no room for redemption, only condemnation and destruction for the guilty. It is a feeding frenzy of sinners obliterating sinners. The other mode of thought is one taught to us by Jesus. It denies justice and offers, instead, true grace. It is a free gift that nobody deserves. Yet, it is the most transformational concept in the universe and Jesus demonstrated, many times, the awesome power of grace in his daily dealings with everyday people. Does Richard Roberts deserve grace in this situation? Absolutely not. But neither do any of us in all of creation deserve it.

  • Snakes and Such – The haunting 1992 movie Unforgiven is another complex multilayered, parabolic story of the old West. It is set in the 1878 town of Big Whisky, which Isaiah 28:1-3 indicates is a state of being drunk on self to point of deification. So it is a place where the biggest, baddest self-exalter is on the throne. That would be today’s prosperity televangelists in the media mesmerizing business. But in the movie this person is Little Bill Daggett, played by the inestimable Gene Hackman. Daggett’s evil self is greater than English Bob, played by Richard Harris, whom he beats up. Daggett cannot build a house worth living in, which is bad news since God wants to live in our soul-house. Daggett’s job is to protect the town pimp and whores. But when two cowboys cut up a whore’s face, Daggett cannot oversee justice properly even as certain prosperity televangelists apparently cannot oversee justice properly at the Oral Roberts University. So the whores hire Will Munny, played by Clint Eastwood, to kill the two cowboys. Similarly, two fired professors hired lawyers to sue ORU for injustice. Munny appears on the surface to be as Little Bill. But Dagget is a braggart; Munny is self-effacing – giving credit for his reputation to whiskey. Dagget has outlawed guns. Guns, like swords, can represent truth and truth’s defense. Munny stands for truths. Daggett’s prosperity program includes overlooking abuse and taking advantage. Munny is principled and won’t take advantage. Daggett’s character shares many traits of prosperity preachers, while Munny is the reformed reformer. Munny is very much forgiven while Daggett is very much not. In fact, the whole story is driven to the inescapable conclusion that Daggett must die. The fake good can pretend to fight evil for only so long. The fake good content themselves with beating down lesser fake goods while winking at their own greater evil empires. Then comes God’s assassin who is on the money with whatever skill set is necessary and has the will to bust through the reality distortion fields. Perhaps pimps need to be more careful how they decorate their establishments. As Will Munny says, “Any man that don’t want to get killed, better clear on out the back.” And such men of the day show that God is the ultimate closer, finisher and terminator of snakes and such. (All this to be taken spiritually, not literally.) http://www.inthatdayteachings.com
