Schmidt hasn’t learned to stop digging

Nearly a week after Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Ohio) lashed out at Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), calling the decorated Marine veteran a “coward,” she’s still in a pretty deep hole. Unfortunately for her, the rookie lawmaker hasn’t learned to stop digging.

For example, Schmidt probably isn’t scoring points by characterizing herself as a victim.

Rep. Jean Schmidt flung the word “coward” at a decorated war veteran from Pennsylvania last week, but the Ohio Republican’s comments landed with a splat in her own Cincinnati district, where some supporters are backing away as she scrambles to explain what she meant.

Judging by her words yesterday — the first after avoiding the public for three days — Schmidt doesn’t understand what the fuss is about, and sees herself more as victim than villain. “I am amazed at what a national story this has become,” she said in a statement. “I have been attacked very personally, continuously since Friday evening.”

Yes, we should all feel sorry for poor Jean Schmidt, who made up a quote to relay an attack against one of Congress’ most respected members, impugning his integrity because she disagreed with his policy position. And here I thought conservatives didn’t believe in the idea of victimization.

And then, just to dig in a little deeper, Schmidt is not only feeling sorry for herself, she’s blaming the media for her mistake.

Rep. Jean Schmidt says her comments Friday on the floor of the U.S. House have been misinterpreted and that she has been made a scapegoat by a media disappointed that Congress didn’t vote to withdraw troops from Iraq. […]

“I have become the lightning rod because they don’t like the message,” said Schmidt, R-Loveland, who was elected to Congress in an August special election.

Ah yes, the media conspiracy tack, the last refuge of a fool.

For what it’s worth, Schmidt may represent a conservative Ohio district, but her callous style and personal attacks aren’t boosting her popularity back home. At least two Republicans who ran against her in this year’s special election have expressed interest in taking Schmidt on in a GOP primary again next year.

They won’t hurt for campaign material.

It’s really amazing how little incompetence and lack of honesty matter to Republican voters. How else to explaing her win over Hackett? (Diebold?)

Or a second term for the Crony-in-Chief. (Diebold?)

  • “It’s really amazing how little incompetence and lack of honesty matter to Republican voters.”

How true, bcinaz. Greed, self-importance, and selfishness are primary considerations for GOP supporters these days.

And I thought the media conspiracy tack was the first and last refuge of a fool.

  • “”It is characteristic of those who are evil to judge others as evil. Unable to acknowledge their own imperfections, they must explain away their flaws by blaming others. And, if necessary, they will even destory others in the name of righteousness.” ..M. Scott Peck

Schmidt will go to her grave never recognizing her blunder. For the party of ‘personal responsibility’, they never seem to accept responsibility for anything.

  • Perfect meme for 2006–portray ourselves as the party of civility.

Put Schmidt’s quote and Frist’s “kill, defeat, assassinate” statement from the nuclear option flap in front of a montage of over-the-top Repub statements from the past decade … the ads write themselves.

    you ommitted fear.

  • And here I thought conservatives didn’t believe in the idea of victimization.

    Oh my:

You made the nail meet “The Hammer” with that one….

  • Re: Ohio

All this and Bob Ney too! No wonder the license plate slogan is “Fasten Your Seatbelt.”

  • Although she looks like a “bulldog”, I doubt that she’s spent any time in the Marines. How would she know anything about their actions? Maybe she should ask Murtha (someone who’s been there). She not only talks about what she doesn’t know, she makes things up (it’s called lying) to cover her tracks (she never talk to the Ohio State Rep. (he said so)).
You got a real liability there, Cincinnati. I suggest you elect someone with a little more credibility.
