Sen. Craig (R-Idaho) arrested

There have been rumors swirling for years about Sen. Larry Craig’s (R-Idaho) personal life, subcription-only Roll Call reports this afternoon that the rumors might very well be true.

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.

Craig’s arrest occurred just after noon on June 11 at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. On Aug. 8, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct in the Hennepin County District Court. He paid more than $500 in fines and fees, and a 10-day jail sentence was stayed. He also was given one year of probation with the court that began on Aug. 8.

Without any additional details, it’s obviously hard to know whether the charges have merit, but it doesn’t sound encouraging for the conservative Republican senator.

Karsnia entered the bathroom at noon that day and about 13 minutes after taking a seat in a stall, he stated he could see “an older white male with grey hair standing outside my stall.” The man, who lingered in front of the stall for two minutes, was later identified as Craig.

“I could see Craig look through the crack in the door from his position. Craig would look down at his hands, ‘fidget’ with his fingers, and then look through the crack into my stall again. Craig would repeat this cycle for about two minutes,” the report states.

Craig then entered the stall next to Karsnia’s and placed his roller bag against the front of the stall door. “My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall,” Karsnia stated in his report. “From my seated position, I could observe the shoes and ankles of Craig seated to the left of me.” […]

“At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area,” the report states. […]

“With my left hand near the floor, I pointed towards the exit. Craig responded, ‘No!’ I again pointed towards the exit. Craig exited the stall with his roller bags without flushing the toilet. … Craig said he would not go. I told Craig that he was under arrest, he had to go, and that I didn’t want to make a scene. Craig then left the restroom.”

A spokesperson for Craig said this was a “misunderstanding.” We’ll see.

One thing’s for sure — the GOP didn’t need another sex scandal right now.

Update: Greg Sargent notes That Craig “voted in favor of an Idaho Constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman, and also voted in favor of last year’s Federal Marriage Amendment doing the same thing.”

What’s more, Craig said he reached under the officer’s stall to pick up a piece of fallen paper. “It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper,” the arresting officer said in the report.

Based on the Vitter case, I anticipate if anything a big boost for Craig among Republicans and talking heads.

  • To my fellow conservatives please take this opportunity to look at the campaign of Ron Paul 2008 the real conservative choice. I feel his message if anything is at least worth listening to for yourself and not being told what his message is. We clearly could use more people like him in office.

  • At this rate, hearing that a Republican legislator actually had sex with a *woman* is going to sound positively……miraculous.

Don’t these guys have any control over their urges at all? I could understand it if it were at some deserted highway rest stop in the middle of nowhere, but in a heavily traveled international airport in broad daylight is beyond moronic.

I’m sure his constituents back home will get an earful about it in the next election. 😉

  • Of course he is against gay marriage!! It is a lot safer to have cheep sex with people who you will never have to marry!

  • Gay: A person one fucks over in the bathroom and in the Senate.

From – The Larry Craig Dictionary.

  • Well, this confirms it.

I have a friend who was involved in Idaho politics nearly 20 years ago. He said Larry Craig was well-known as a closet ho-mo-seck-shool, even back then.

Just for ‘laughs’, I showed the police report to a laywer friend who specializes in cases of men arrested for “lewd conduct” in restrooms. He snorted “Yep. Busted! Another closet case.”

At least he didn’t pass a note under the bathroom stall asking if the other party was into diapers.

  • Do the Democrats in Idaho have a Jon Tester/Brian Schweitzer type politician out there? If so they should go after this disgusting hypocrite.

  • It’s quite obvious that those like Senator Craig want anti-gay laws because then it’s more dangerous for them and thus heightens the eroticism.

Make it a “water-closet case”, and we’re that much closer to reality…

  • Having gay sex in St. Paul. This is too much for a Republican Christian.

    Paul was the homophobe.

  • Shouldn’t this disqualify him from his senate seat (no pun intended)? Shouldn’t it disqualify him from sitting on committees? It’s getting to the point that we view all republicans in office with suspicion. I guess it’s just a matter of catching them in the right mood.

  • Since when is tapping your foot or touching the bottm of a bathroom stall lewd conduct? Its all a bunch of horsecrap. Bill Clinton could not have gooten this much press if the cop would have had video of Clinton sucking his dick!

  • hm, maybe he had to take a crap really really bad? and maybe he was moving around in his stall because he was plugged up? maybe he dropped a piece of paper or toilet paper? idk. this is rediculous, poor guy.doesnt everyone do this when they bathroom is packed and they really have to go to the RR?
