Small explosion in Times Square puts ideologues in attack mode

Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it appears that someone detonated a small explosive device outside a military recruiting station in Times Square early this morning. Nearly as interesting was how ideologues chose to exploit the incident for political gain.

A small explosion damaged a U.S. military recruiting station but caused no injuries in New York’s Times Square before dawn on Thursday, triggering a Pentagon alert for other stations across the country.

“We’re treating it as if it were an incident of vandalism,” Army spokesman Paul Boyce said at the Pentagon.

Times Square — the normally bustling “Crossroads of the World” with shops, restaurants, hotels, theaters and office towers — was largely empty when the crude bomb went off at around 3:45 a.m. EST.

Low-grade explosives packed in an ammunition box cracked the recruiting station’s thick glass door and twisted its metal framing, police said. The blast also shattered a window encasing the classic poster of Uncle Sam saying “I Want You,” but did not expose the interior of the office.

Authorities are reportedly looking for a man in a gray hooded sweatshirt who was seen leaving the scene on a bicycle.

And while it seems pretty irresponsible to start speculating about the political motivations of the criminal, it didn’t take long at all for certain segments to start speculating about the political motivations of the criminal.

For example, some conservatives found a dKos commenter — not a diarist, mind you, but a commenter adding his or her two cents to someone else’s diary thread — pointing to the right.

INCITE the violence, or to trigger arranged mob responses, and make sure it all gets pinned on the Left. And the right seems to be able to get the FBI and law enforcement to do this for them as well. Anarchy, chaos, property damage, physical harm, mayhem, murder, militarized police with massive crowd control equipment, are all ‘options’ the right are eager to use to shut down any potentially energizing movement.

Several conservatives were outraged, not because someone was trying to exploit the crime for political purposes, but because the right wanted to exploit the crime to go after the left. Power Line, for its part, quickly identified its likely suspects.

Islamic Extremists or Code Pinkers? Those groups appear to be the most likely suspects in a bombing in Times Square early this morning. Someone set off an “improvised explosive device” in front of the military recruiting station there; the bomb blew a hole in the building’s door. No one was hurt.

The Times Square recruiting station “has been the site of regular antiwar protests since the start of the Iraq war.” Given the increasing virulence of attacks on the military and on military recruiting facilities by antiwar groups like Code Pink, most notably the repeated confrontations in Berkeley, one could speculate that a liberal group is the most likely culprit.

Can we not wait until there’s at least a suspect in custody before playing politics with “an incident of vandalism”?

Hmm, what would Atrios say about that last sentence?

  • People still read Atrios? I haven’t been there since 2002, when the fawning groupies took over the comment section and clogged it with nonsense.

  • Bush wouldn’t engineer a terrorist attack for political gain, but he would bomb and empty recruiting station when he knew no one would get hurt. He wouldn’t assassinate Obama, but he would relax security at Obama events. Remember the guy who exposed the destruction of National Guard records told Kevin Drum that they didn’t try to off him, but did deny him the medicine he’d need for a potentially fatal virus.

This is their style, and pretty much any time the blogs light up, you can bet they had the rumors way in advance of the story (remember the docs handed to Rather? Funny how they had proof of them being forgeries minutes after the piece aired).

Again, maybe they didn’t engineer this instance, but if it didn’t exist, they would certainly have to invent it. They’ve already manufactured such instances to get us into war with Iran (remember the faked videotape?) and this seems a lot easier to pull off. Can’t bomb Iran? Might as well set up some peace activists.

So yes, this is the precisely right time to think about this before they craft the narrative to their liking.

  • Personally, I suspect John McCain. After all, he seems to think bombs are a good thing, to be taken lightly and encouraged.

bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran. . .

I know very few other people who seem this thrilled with bombs. Therefore, he has the makings of a prime suspect. As far as I know.

  • Is is just me or is this incident receiving way more attention than it deserves? I experienced an “incident of vandalism” to my car a couple of weeks ago, and the police merely took down a report over the phone, there was no seemingly wall-to-wall national press coverage.

  • Funny, I know that military recruiting station well. I took part in a peace demonstration at that station about 15 years ago, during the administration of George H.W. Bush, the Panama operation, and the Persian Gulf War.

It never occurred to us to bomb the place. It seemed to defeat the point that brought us there. But there are all kinds of people out there.

  • For example, some conservatives found a dKos commenter — not a diarist, mind you, but a commenter adding his or her two cents to someone else’s diary thread

Harrumph. Diarist elitism. Commenters need love too. 🙂

  • …while it seems pretty irresponsible to start speculating about the political motivations of the criminal…

Irresponsible, perhaps, but inevitable. First thing I thought of. In fact, it made me wonder why there haven’t been more protests, violent or otherwise.

The answer is that there isn’t a draft. I’m halfway convinced that the reason Bush opposes a draft is not because he thinks it’s bad policy or politics but because it would give people something to actively protest.

  • First off, I don’t have to bomb a recruiting center to put a dent in the war machine—I just talk to the kids before they get sucked in by the “car-salesman” type recruiters. But as for this particular event, I don’t think it’s political. this has all the marks of some right-leaning, pro-war kid who got tossed by the recruiters, or some kid who signed on the line, got cold feet, and is now trying to “Sec-8” himself out of the Army.

Trust me—with all the cameras on the Square, they’ll find this kid. Guaranteed….

  • “….when the crude bomb went off at around 3:45 a.m. EST.”
Where was Hillary? Did she answer the phone when the call came in?

  • Looks like it’s time for Obama and Clinton to get on board with S. 1959, “The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007,” and make damn sure that there are no “Islam-O-Fascists” hiding under my bed as I suspect there are.

It’s time to throw people who commit thought crimes in the American Gulag once and for all.

  • How do we know it wasn’t really an agent provocateur manipulated by Fox Noise to cook up distractionary “scare-the-people-for-patriotic-ends” prolefeed (as in blaming International Terrorism for the incident while the “real” perp–perhaps someone with Serious Emotional Disorders–is quietly given safe harbour in Canada, along with “hush money” on the side)?

  • Can we wait to speculate? No. It was Colonel Mustard with a pipe (bomb) in the sewer.

  • The current administration can’t even stop a bombing in Times Square ! How can we trust them to protect Kalamazoo ?

  • For what it is worth, and it may be worth nothing more than a red herring or a prank, this is the 38th anniversary of the Greenwich Village Weatherman bombings with their assortment of crazies/agent provocateurs/Cointelpro/Bring-the-War-Home Types and their stated commitments to remember the date. If so, more manipulating the public and/or sending signals.

  • ZOMG, some idiot built a bomb and set it off. I’m pretty sure the wingnut bedwetters will now gladly hand over their remaining civil rights to make us all safer from Code Pink. Warrantless wiretaps? Fine. Habeus Corpus? Who needs it. Torture more brown people? No problem.

Just don’t take their metal penises guns.

So what happens if it turns out it’s a disgruntled Iraq vet upset about reneged on promises of benefits or the lack of adequate care? It would be such a bummer for the right of their Islamoterrorism hopes are dashed on the rocks of reality.

Then the right will never disclose that he was apprehended, the media will never report on it and we’ll all go back to shopping at Virgin Megastore and Toys R Us with the bomb even less of a vague memory than tha anthrax mailings after 9/11.

  • just when i think that the public has learned its lesson about jumping to conclusions about these kinds of incidents (e.g. the flashing toys under the bridge, the gang-bangers in miami(?)) along comes the 3 a.m. ad and proves me wrong again.

  • Can we not wait until there’s at least a suspect in custody before playing politics with “an incident of vandalism”? That is probably the most sensible thing anyone has said.

  • About 90% of abortion clinic bombings did only property damage. I guess they were no big deal.

You know what was a big huge deal? when the Olberdouche got some soap in the mail.
