Snow blind

That’s it; I’m officially convinced that Tony Snow is just in his job for laughs. I’ve been on the fence for months about whether Snow actually believes what he says, but I’m finally convinced — he doesn’t.

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said Monday that no “big disagreement” exists between President Bush and Colin Powell, despite the former secretary of state’s comments Sunday that Iraq is in the midst of a civil war and the United States is losing there.

[Snow added that Powell] “also made it clear that, in his view, that the proper — that he suspected that the president was going to pursue a strategy that would, in fact, attack the kinds of problems that we’re discussing — political reconciliation, building capability among the Iraqis, the recognition that the Iraqis, themselves, ultimately had to have responsibility for taking care of things, and that, again, whatever you did, you had to make sure that the military had a clear mission. I don’t see any big disagreement”

Let’s see, Powell thinks Iraq is in the midst of a civil war; Bush doesn’t.

Powell blasted “stay the course,” when Bush embraced it.

Powell supports direct discussions with Iran and Syria; Bush rejects them.

Powell says we are losing the war in Iraq; Bush says we are winning.

Powell opposes sending additional troops to Iraq; Bush is considering just that.

Snow doesn’t see “any big disagreement”? What a kidder.

There’s no business like Snow business. Republican standards of truthfulness are such that Snow thinks that just because his job desciption calls for lying that it doesn’t reflect on him as a human being. He winks and thinks we’re all in on the joke.

  • Next “Tony the Phoney” will tell us that Colin Powell and Bush are both white (or black).

He’s just trying to reach the bar set by Ari and Scott, and he’s doing a heckuva job.

  • I’ve posted it before, but I enjoyed the TDS version of Barney’s voiceover which asked Snow the only question I’d want to get an answer for, “What’s it like at night, when the demons come out?”

  • CB, you must know Snow is no “kidder.” It’s just a classic case of Snow and the rest of the Bush administration being in a state of denial, can’t you see? Fortunately, the rest of us realize the true state of things and are looking forward to the Democratic-majority Congress taking over and restoring accountability to the Bush administration’s mishandling of just about everything.

  • If the White House would just add a laugh track to Tony Snow’s press conferences, they would be funny and we could all laugh along. Until then, they’re disturbing in their dishonesty and a daily reminder of how screwed-up the Bush government is.

  • It’s hardly surprising that the Party of Liars would shove forward a liar as their figurehead. The last spokesliar this administration had who wasn’t all lies all the time was rapidly-balding smackhead Ari Fleischer, and when he told the truth he was frankly scary. Remember, “Americans need to watch what they say, watch what they do”? If that wasn’t the harbinger of Gotterdammerung, I don’t know what it would take. After him, affable dimwitted punching-bag Scottie McLellan was the kind of comic relief Americans hinted they wanted.

Tony Snow knows that telling the truth would be just too painful. Can you imagine the reaction if he just gave up the act and said, “OK, you’re right. Colin Powell has exposed us for the fabricators we are, and the nation owes him a debt of gratitude for calling a turd a turd. Frankly, we’ve been feeding you a straight diet of bullshit with just a soupcon of bizarre unreality sprinkled over it for 6 years now. Who knew you’d develop an allergy, after finding it tasty for so long?”

  • Well, you know what they say about “hand-me-downs;” they’re always worn out, out of touch with the reality of current trends, and they make for a lousy fit.

    And—Tony Show is a FOX hand-me-down….

  • The final line that got partially gobbled is “unreality sprinkled over it for 6 years now. Who knew you’d develop an allergy, after finding it tasty for so long?”

  • CB, your sanity (and our) is definitely at stake here. I wonder if NBC’s David Gregory will pick up the torch for the “I’ve-fallen-and-can’t-get-up” White House press corp and point out your delineated discrepancies.

  • The modern Republican spin machine believes it is more important to control the message than to have scruples. Unfortunately, it works. I believe Orwell wrote about these guys a while back.

  • Is anyone listening to Snow? For my money, he is simply contributing to the loss of credibility in the White House.

  • “No, no, no. Here’s what you need to understand. The President doesn’t want to lose, and Colin Powell doesn’t want to lose. That’s sounds like agreement to me. I mean, c’mon. Next question.”

  • C’mon guys – give Snow a break! The President and Colin Powell have no disagreement – they agree that they disagree (on every point!)
