So, who’s the new guy?

OK, so [tag]Karl Rove[/tag] is giving up the policy job he never should have had in the first place. Who’s getting the responsibilities that have been taken away from Rove? That would be [tag]Joel Kaplan[/tag]. Who’s he? I’m glad you asked.

According to his official WH bio, Kaplan seems like a logical choice to coordinate policy from the [tag]West Wing[/tag]. He’s been helping to do this anyway since Bush took office. (Before joining the [tag]White House[/tag] staff, he worked on Bush’s campaign and clerked for Antonin [tag]Scalia[/tag]. Natch.)

But there’s also the part of Kaplan’s political background the bio doesn’t mention.

The man Bush tapped to fill Karl Rove’s spot as his policy wizard is none other than Joel Kaplan, who took part in the infamous “Brooks Brothers riot” of 2000. That’s when a bunch of Washington GOP operatives, posing as outraged Floridians, waved fists, chanted “Stop the fraud!” and pounded windows in an effort to intimidate officials engaged in the Florida recount effort.

In George Bush’s Washington, there’s no shame in staging a fake protest to undermine a democratic election, apparently: last year, the Washington Post’s Al Kamen noted that “the “rioters” proudly note their participation on resumes and in interviews.” Kaplan was even the one to cheekily dub the fracas the “[tag]Brooks Brothers Riot[/tag].”

In other words, when it comes to coordinating White House policy, the Bush gang is going from Karl Rove, a campaign hatchet man with zero policy experience/expertise, to Joel [tag]Kaplan[/tag], who demonstrated his fealty to Bush by intimidating Florida election officials and helping steal 25 electoral votes nearly six years ago.

As Michael Crowley put it, “That doesn’t mean he’s not qualified. But it sheds some light on the continued value Bush apparently places on total loyalty.” As if there was any doubt.

couls someone tell me how well rove’s job of overseeing the katrina rebuild went? lololol

  • Here is a Q&A done at Ask.com back in 2004 where Joel Kaplan answers questions about the budget. You can see from some of his responses that he’s real good at the spin game. Toward the end you can even see him slipping in some of his lackeys with toady kiss-ups and planted questions about Lifetime Savings Accounts.

I wonder if Joel is a doctor?? If so, he might be the inventor of the Dr. Joel Kaplan Kit.

  • Oh Gridlock, is that for when Viagra isn’t enough? I suppose Joel Kaplan might be able “pump” something into Bush’s flaccid second term. Maybe not.

  • Well, is Joel Kaplan going to be in the league of Bush’s other stellar appointees such as Bernard Kerik and Michael Brown? Given how well the current vetting process works nothing will surprise me.

  • A crook replaces a criminal. This is news in the administration of the Criminal-in-Chief???

I was looking at that picture of the “Brooks Brothers Riot” in the WaPo and daydreaming to myself how much fun it would have been to have comethrough that door in back swinging a Louisville Slugger. Ah yes, the only “good Righties” are face down, bleeding out. And I’d have been living up to my oath of enlistment to defend the constitution against all enemies…domestic.

  • Now that Karl won’t be working on policy, what will he be doing? Why is the American taxpayer paying to have someone in the White House worrying about the Congressional election prospects of one particular party? Isn’t that the Republican National Committee’s job? Shouldn’t he be working there, not the White House? I know that’s an old-fashioned distinction, and the sitting Pres always goes to stump for his party, but a full-time campaign mastermind in the White House?

Of course, this gang has never understood the difference between policy and political anyway…

  • Since when did Rove ever do policy? It’s always been politics. That’s all they know. What will this Joel person be doing with so-called “policy?” More likely, this is just another way to spread the public wealth among their cronies.
