Springer won’t run for Senate

Surprisingly and fortunately, trash-TV host Jerry Springer announced today that he will not run for the U.S. Senate. For months, Springer has been mulling over a challenge to incumbent Sen. George Voinovich (R) and leading many to believe he would announce his candidacy soon.

Today, however, Springer ended the suspense and said he would not be a candidate.

“As long as I’m still doing the show, my message — no matter how sincere or how heartfelt — simply doesn’t reach,” Springer said at a news conference. “I can’t get through the clutter of the show.”

Of course he can’t cut through the clutter of the show. His name became synonymous with the worst TV had to offer. Springer’s “program” was a choreographed freak show. It made Springer rich and infamous, but no one should be surprised that voters would inextricably link the man with the show that bears his name.
