Still hating after all these years

The Vatican announced this week that the Church believes countries that sanction gay marriages are inhabited by people with “profoundly disordered minds.”

It’s always nice to see leaders of the Roman Catholic Church embracing modern, progressive ideas about the changing nature of families.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family released a glossary this week to cover a variety of sexual themes, including homosexuality, birth control, and abortion. And if you thought that the Church’s own devastating sexual molestation scandal might lead Vatican officials to lay off “throwing stones” at others, think again.

Homosexuality is defined by the Vatican’s new glossary as an “unresolved psychological conflict.” It goes on to say that heterosexuals who have the nerve to try and extend legal/societal rights to their gay fellow citizens are denying a “psychological problem which makes homosexuality against the social fabric.”

Predictably, the guide also condemns abortion and use of birth control, but saves its true invectives for gays.

Two millennia ago, Jesus broke bread with those society shunned and washed the feet of those society would not touch. Today, the Vatican condemns people based on their sexual orientation and their use of contraceptives. We’ve come a long way.

A year ago, I couldn’t go a day without hearing of another archdiocese coming under fire for hiding sexually abusive priests, shuttling them from one community to another, while keeping the cruel truth secret to avoid further embarrassment. Several archdioceses are now facing bankruptcy due to costs associated with compensating victims of the church’s abuse.

No offense, guys, but maybe the Church can start lecturing the world on how people should conduct their private lives after it gets its own house in order.

Maybe we should all send the Vatican a postcard with Matthew 7:1-5.
