Stonewall Scottie strikes again

There’s a fascinating point in the trajectory of every presidential scandal — and there sure have been a lot of them — in which Scott McClellan decides he just doesn’t want to talk about it anymore. It’s like the scene in Monty Python’s Holy Grail in which King Arthur argues with a French guard. After a series of unfruitful exchanges, the guard eventually tells the King, in his outrageous French accent, “No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.”

Usually, this McClellan breaking point takes a little while. The Plame leak scandal went on for months before McClellan clammed up. With Abramoff, McClellan at least humored reporters for a few weeks before announcing he wouldn’t answer any more questions. With the controversy surrounding Dick Cheney’s shooting incident, McClellan gave up on responses after just one day. From this afternoon’s briefing:

“Let me just say this, since there’s some follow-up questions that you all have. First of all, I think we went through this pretty thoroughly yesterday and I worked to answer the questions to the best of my ability and in a forthright manner, based on the facts that I knew. There were some very legitimate questions that were asked. As I indicated, I always believe that you can look back and work to do better. I indicated that yesterday. I think today what we’re focusing our efforts is on what are the most pressing priorities before the American people. And that’s where we’re focusing.”

And with that, McClellan was done — not with the briefing, but with the Cheney story.

How desperate was he? He played one card almost uncontrollably. See if you can spot it.

“I think today what we’re focusing our efforts is on what are the most pressing priorities before the American people…. If you want to continue to spend time on that, that’s fine. We’re moving on to the priorities of the American people…. We’re going to keep focusing on the pressing priorities of the American people, like talking about how to make health care more affordable and accessible. We’ve got important work to do for the American people, and that’s where we’re going to keep our focus…. As I indicated, there are some pressing priorities before the American people and they want us to spend our time on that, and that’s where we’re going to keep our focus today…. It is what it is, and I think it’s time to move on for the American people…. I think the American people want this White House to do what we have always done, and what we were doing yesterday and what we’re doing today, which is focusing on the priorities they care most about. That’s what we’re doing. The President is spending his time focusing on the threats that we face and how do we confront those threats and better protect the American people, and how do we continue to keep the economy competitive and growing.”

Yes, of course. McClellan could respond to the unanswered questions about the Vice President shooting a guy, which seems to have captured the entire political world’s attention, but for the sake of the “American people,” the White House is refusing to provide additional information.

They’re quite a bunch of noble patriots, aren’t they?

Wow! They have once again discovered the American People.

Reminds me of Bush’s justification for domestic spying without a warrant. He has a job to protect the American People.

I wish someone would read him his oath of office. “… and swear to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States.” Note the absence of the words American People. Why? Because there are certain liberties listed in the Constitution that may seem, if allowed, to endanger the people, but which are necessary to protect them from oppression.

Notably, the 2nd amendment! Considering that most victums of hand gun violance die from a gun wielded by either the legal owner or a relative in their own home, if the President’s oath was to protect the American People, his first job would be to seize all hand guns in private ownership.

  • What if the “American People” wanna know WTF is going on with the people that are soooo concerned about them? I mean being a aprt of the “American People” I would like to know that people in change aren’t complete screw offs. (which they are)

  • As an American Person, I think its time to take the relationship between the White House and the Press out of the control of the White House. There should be rules about who the White House has to talk to. They shouldn’t be able to pick and choose. Press reps of the White House should be under oath whenever they communicate to the American People via the Press. And they should be required to answer any question that is not a matter of National Security truthfully and fully. I know, me and John Lennon, right?

  • The Texas sheriff exonerated Cheney way too soon and deprivedMcClellan of the standard “can’t comment on an ongoing investigation,” and McClellan is simply too stupid to dream up any other dodge.

  • You know, McClellan isn’t as much of an emotionless robot as Fleischer was. I know it’s a fantasy — but I keep imagining that some day at the podium, Scottie is just going to have a complete mental breakdown and start screaming about how he doesn’t know he works for these people and his conscience and soul can’t take it anymore.

  • It looks like they don’t like it when you talk about the “real boss”. Bush is the best weapon the Democrats have going into the ’06 election and I hope they have enough sense to drive that Bush-Republican-Cheney nail home. The laws of the land don’t apply to these people and they want all of your money including retirement funds. If you agree with that, Vote Republican, other wise if you still believe in America, Vote Democrat. The sooner Scotty and Scooter are unemployed or imprisoned all the better. Empty suit presidents with an IQ of 81 and “fashion gods” are protecting us and we shouldn’t voice our concerns. The media was harping on Hillary being angry( I’m not a big fan) but I feel everybody that is in a position to be heard now about this crooked president and his administration should be speaking up and angry as hell. That’s what I want to hear. Not propaganda from Scotty.

  • Hey, we are American People down here in the gulf south. We have some pressing prioroties down here. Why aren’t they focusing on us?

  • REPORTER: “Scott, could you please address the security of the AMERICAN PEOPLE and how they can be protected from quick-triggered Vice-Presidents? And you mentioned the health care of the AMERICAN PEOPLE – Mr. Whittington is one of the AMERICAN PEOPLE, could you comment on his health? His heart attack sounds like a fairly pressing concern. When you say this White House is focusing on the AMERICAN PEOPLE, can you assure us that you aren’t focusing a shotgun barrel on them? The AMERICAN PEOPLE want to know.”

  • The name of this daily event should be “Watch Scottie Try Not to Answer.” The networks and some print media biggies pay “journalists” to occupy chairs and play at being big time reporters, but as far as I can tell from the transcripts and snippets of footage I have seen recently, they’re mostly interested in the little unscripted performances some of them put on about how theyare persistent or offended or agitated or whatever because Scottie lies to them. Not that any of them would give up their cappuccinos and attaches to actually go out and pursue a real story. Reporting is HARD!

America is not fooled by this kabuki, which continues to add to the errosion of the status of the flabby, dying Old Media machine.

  • The President is spending his time focusing on the threats that we face and how do we confront those threats and better protect the American people, and how do we continue to keep the economy competitive and growing.”

The why is the Vice President out hunting? Shouldn’t he be “focusing on the threats that we face…”

that seems like such an easy follow-up…

  • If the White House press corp had any balls, they’d just stop showing up for these things and go out and actually report on stuff instead of this dumb-assed dance with Scotty Mc.

Nothing is ever gained from these stupid exchanges anyway. Go ask the Texas sheriff if Cheney was drinking and how they know. Go talk to that Ambassador who the third member of the hunting party and get her story. Hell, they could even try and actually understand how a shotgun works and that there is not really any thing called “sprayed with pellets.” Getting shot is getting shot. If a black dude unloaded a 28 gauge on some cop, they’d never say that he sprayed him with a few pellets. It’s horseshit nonsense.

  • Classic, from Bob Harris:

    Bob Harris:
How will the White House explain Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the face?
Usually the polls on my site are pretty facetious, but for once I’m actually half-serious. Will it be:

    a) Washington, Lincoln, and Roosevelt all shot guys in the face, too
    b) The Patriot Act gives Cheney the legal authority to shoot guys in the face
    c) The victim’s face was harboring Al-Qaeda’s #3 man, or
    d) If you’re innocent, you shouldn’t mind a shotgun blast to the face

Some of the explanations we’re hearing already have hints of one or two of these…

  • Post Whittington heart attack:

So it really WAS bad along…not just superficial flesh wounds…

What I think is fascinating at this juncture is the apparent inability of Dubya’s operation to control Cheney’s operation in getting the message out and trying to control the spin…

A 78 year old guy has been shot, suffers a heart attack, and is in ICU…
this could get even worse for the victim…

And Bush cannot get Cheney on a leash…

  • I don’t see why they bother with Presidential Press Conferences or the Washington Press Corps for that matter. The institution should be abolished. It does more harm than good. Maybe if reporters were denied access (or denied themselves access) to the White House spin machine they’d have to go out and dig up some real news.

  • I’m thinking the Bush and Cheney crime families are planning for worst case now…and, remember, they have tons of incriminating evidence on each other…

What is Cheney’s exit strategy if Whittington worsens or succumbs???

And who would run operations at the White House if Cheney is forced to leave???

  • The press corps could try behavior modification on Scotty.
When Scott is responsive and forthcoming, ask questions and be politely attentive, but when Scott does his stonewall act, reporters should read newspapers, take naps, listen to ipods and return the level of respect that is being displayed from the podium.

  • I watched part of the briefing this morning and spent my time after thinking up fantasy questions for Scottie, like:
Scott, The Vice President has not come before the public to give his version of events and offer his condolences to the shooting victim. He has instead basically left it to women and you to dole out a stingy narrative of what happened. He has allowed people speaking on his behalf to blame the man he shot. Do you think this is because he is a coward who does not dare to face questions that could reasonably be expected after such an incident? Or does he basically feel the American People – who are so in need of protection – have no right to know about the circumstances when their VP shoots someone? Or is he just a flat crazy-stubborn guy who believes he is above the law? Who does he think he is? Who do YOU think he is?

  • What about the American people who think their Vice President owes an explanation on how he managed to shoot someone in the face?

  • This is totally nuts… I mean, I can’t even read about it anymore because it’s just patently ridiculous. And on top of it, the IRONY, oh my, the IRONY! The most secretive sociopath shoots someone, nearly kills the bugger, gets his buddy to go to the news, she’s a frickin lobbyist, gets the coverup wrong, tries to hide his personal life, info, etc…and THIS is the person who is trying to take away our country’s liberties and debase our constitution. It’s so utterly wacky that it makes the mind reel…just what in the wide wide world of sports is agoin on here???

  • “The President is spending his time focusing on the threats that we face and how do we confront those threats and better protect the American people, and how do we continue to keep the economy competitive and growing.”

And he’s doing such a superb job of it that his approval rating is at 39%. Maybe the president needs to “focus” a little harder, eh Scottie?

  • “The President is spending his time focusing on the threats that we face and how do we confront those threats and better protect the American people …”

Is one of those threats a shotgun-toting Dick Cheney? He sure seems like credible threat to the American people what with the “He got in the way of my bird shot” defense.

  • What I think is fascinating at this juncture is the apparent inability of Dubya’s operation to control Cheney’s operation in getting the message out and trying to control the spin…
Ricardo, I absolutely agree. This episode reveals once and for all the power dynamics in the President/Vice President relationship. Not only is it a co-Presidency, but Cheney is the more dominant personality. I never believed that Bush picked Cheney to be his vice president; I always thought that the cabal felt that Bush was suitably puppet-like to function well with Cheney. I think we’ve got confirmation here.
Interestingly, it’s a non-political event — a hunting trip accident — that finally jars the media on this point. The fact that before the start of the Iraq war Cheney was making war declaration-like statements to the press — in effect forcing Bush’s hand — passed pretty much without commen at the time.

  • The LEFT Media Trust’s ardent mercenaries have infected the Democrat Mob with an avid appetite for superficial gossip, as is unfortunately displayed in the whining posts on this thread. The LEFT’s fascination with the misdirected gunfire of elderly gentlemen is amazing in this situation, for instead of a humane sympathy for the actors in this accident, the Parasite LEFT is reduced to their usual howlsof~~ “HE’S SO STUPID!”~~ A sad reprise of an Andy Kaufman Routine, that the deceased professional cemedian had milked for humorous content long ago. Now, it joins the rest of the derivative chants, stripped of intellectual content, that substitute for policy insights at the highest levels of the Democrat Party. All repeat NOW~~ “HE’S SO STUPID!” You have so identified yourselves as Democrats~~ MEN OF THE LEFT!

  • You gotta hand it to the press corps. I would have been rolling in the aisles in uncontrollable laughter when Scottie said that thing about a “forthright manner.” He doesn’t have a forthright cell in his body.

  • I wonder if they’re scouring the city right now looking for a doppelganger for Whittington, who may already be dead. Shades of Dave. Seriously, though, this is obviously shady. First he just got “peppered” with superficial wounds, then he has a “mild” (yeah, sure) heart attack from BIRD SHOT IN HIS HEART, which would certainly be classified as more than superficial. Meanwhile other stories report that some buckshot “traveled to his heart” and caused the heart attack. Yeah, you can almost see those little lead BBs rolling down those veins, can’t you? What kind of jiveass reporting is this? This old geezer’s in tough shape or dead already, I bet. I wonder what kind of vetting the doctors had to go through before they’d let them look at him. Shouldn’t be hard to find Republican doctors in Texas though, I wouldn’t imagine.

  • And while this is emblematic of this WH, where is the uproar over the fat that it is looking like congress is simply going to rubber stamp, and accept the WH breaking the law of the country in the NSA scandal?

What’s more important folks…a (presumably) one time incident, OR a systematic acceptance that the president, and the white house, are NOT governed by law? That they may simply break any law they want, any time they invoke the “to protect the US” with no proof, and no checks and balances.

Because if this issue is going on the back burner, we can just all tell congress to go home and save lots of expenses.

  • Re: Tom Joad

Cheney is a piece of work: the uproar over the shooting provides him a convenient diversion as he slips up to Capitol Hill to presumably urge suppression of the NSA surveillance investigation and to promote legislation enabling such surveillance…

And that was only shooting with birdshot…suppose he had blasted the guy at close range with a .22???…by now he might have convinced Congress to jettison half of the Bill of Rights…lol.
