Stop me if you’ve heard this one…

It may be stuck inexplicably on page A17, but this is a stunning article nevertheless.

U.N. inspectors investigating Iran’s nuclear program angrily complained to the Bush administration and to a Republican congressman yesterday about a recent House committee report on Iran’s capabilities, calling parts of the document “outrageous and dishonest” and offering evidence to refute its central claims.

Officials of the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency said in a letter that the report contained some “erroneous, misleading and unsubstantiated statements.” The letter, signed by a senior director at the agency, was addressed to Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-Mich.), chairman of the House intelligence committee, which issued the report.

Let’s take a step back and set the stage: conservative Republicans start by complaining that the intelligence community isn’t giving lawmakers the damaging information they want about a Middle East foe. Intelligence officials say it’s because the damaging information doesn’t exist. Conservative Republicans proceed anyway, issuing a sweeping report blasting those officials and accusing the foe of dangerous weapons programs. In response, the IAEA insists the conservative Republicans are completely wrong.

Does any of this sound familiar?

I’m hopelessly naïve, but the one part of this that amazes me is that war proponents still believe they have any credibility left. Surely they remember that all of their Iraq-related claims were wrong while all of the IAEA’s conclusions were correct, don’t they?

Matt Yglesias concluded, “[T]hink about the quality — intellectual and moral — of the men and women who would look at the past several years of American and world history and decide that an outrageous and dishonest report on Iranian nuclear capacities was exactly the sort of thing the US Congress should spend its time working on. Simply put, there’s a miasma of insanity, dishonesty, and hubris floating around the circles they operate in that makes them grossly unfit to govern.”

But CB, the Republican’ts have to attack Iran before the wimp Democrats gain power (whining voice)!

Why they are so hot on attacking the other half of Islam (Shia) beats me. Just trying to be fair, I suppose.

You’d think someone with some sense would explain that in a war, you don’t TRY to create more enemies. But maybe that doesn’t make sense to Dick Cheney.

  • “I’m hopelessly naïve, but the one part of this that amazes me is that war proponents still believe they have any credibility left.”

CB, I guess we will see, come November, whether they have any credibility left. True, to people who actually use their brains they may not have any credibility. But this is the United States, and I don’t think that sort of people is in the majority.

  • CB, “there you (and Kevin Drum) go again.” I followed the Political Animal link and I was shocked–shocked I tell you–to find the graphical display that infers that the Washington Post “deals from the bottom of the deck.” That is, when Republicans release a report on one side of a story, they get page one. When a countering report is issued, it gets buried on A17. It’s shameless of you bloggers to call into question the credibility of the Washington Post (a.k.a.–Neo-con South Headquarters).

  • I wonder if the folks at the IAEA laughed or rolled their eyes when they saw a report with the “q” in Iraq changed to an “n”.

I read about this first thing this morning (good thing I hadn’t eaten). After the initial bout of cramps I realized this time, the neo-cons can lie all they want. The fatheads who copied their report on Iraq just further discredited themselves. Thanks guys, the number of people who believe a damn thing you say just dropped another notch. In addition, this time they can’t send soldiers storming in. Thanks to the brilliant strategy of tricking people into agreeing to invade Iraq, there aren’t any troops left to storm. Not to mention the fact the Iranian army is a bit more organized than the Iraqi army. So earlier today I was thinking, go ahead and lie muthaf____a, we’ll take notes for the upcoming trial.

But then I thought: What’s to stop that walking sphincter in the Oval Office from ordering some sort of major bombing strike against Iran? His conscience? His understanding of politics?
Now I don’t feel so good.

  • I’m willing to have a dialogue on whether we should invade Iran (or not). But one thing must happen first: This entire administration must resign. Bush, Cheney, Rummy, the Condaliar – the entire bunch of them must quit and go home. Until that happens, no effin way in hell should the topic be met with anything other than the ridicule these clowns have earned They lost in Iraq, are losing in Afghanistan, and they want a 3rd go round? Unbelievable.
