Sunday Discussion Group — Super Bowl Edition

Almost exactly year ago, I did my one and only post ever on football in honor of last year’s Super Bowl. (Perhaps I should do more of these; it was the only individual post I’ve ever done to get nominated for a Koufax Award.) With today being Super Bowl Sunday again, I thought it best to do two Sunday Discussion Groups — one on politics, and one on the other big story of the day.

So, what do you think about the big game? Who’s going to win? Final score?

How many of you will be watching for the commercials? Don’t lie; I know you’re out there.

First, I think it’s cool that both teams are from blue states. It’s a sign from the football gods.

Second, Steelers 24, Seahawks 17.

  • Seahawks 27-Steelers 24

I’m so sick of all the Stupor Bowel hype I doubt I’ll watch (I live 90 miles north of Seattle, and it’s 24/7 Seahacks in newspapers, radio and tv).

Isn’t it enough that physical freaks are spoiled virtually all their lives, paid gazlilions to play sixteen “games” a year, wreak havoc on limited school budgets, ruin their bodies, and so on? Do we have to (temporarily) apotheosize them in this annual festival?

99% of the public won’t remember the winner, or even the participants, a month from now.

I’m not anti-sport: I listen to baseball (Mariners) on the radio, while I’m doing more productive things.

  • I want to know if Bush’s spies have heard “chatter” about terrist nipple exposure this year? And will any of the mascots be wearing The Prophet costumes. And whose side will God be on this year?

  • Ed, I think you are a tad incorrect in your assertion that 99% of the public won’t remember the winner or the participants a month from. I’m sure a number of “the public” will not remember the winner, but 99% is clearly erroneous.

I watch for the commercials, as well as the game. I avoid the half-time crap, though, turning off the tv and playing music and EATING!!!

  • Both teams have identities that are without current factual base.
There is no species of bird called “seahawk”.
Pittsburgh’s steel industry has been outsourced overseas.
An engangered industry verses fantasy wildlife that would be endangered if it did exist in the northwest.
    Where has reality gone?

  • I work in advertising, and don’t care about the seahawks or the steelers, so yeah, I’ll be watching for the commercials. 😡

  • I’ll admit, I watch for the commercials. But I’m also excited that the Seahawks are finally going! Unlike Ed Stephan, I’ve been fairly lucky in managing to avoid most of the media, since I get almost all my media from radio and the Internet. Also, being in Portland rather than anywhere near Seattle probably has helped.

    Wooo! Go Seahawks!

  • I love football, but I stopped watching back in the ’80s because I came to realize that the entire game, especially at the pro level, is one massive OSHA violation. None of today’s players (with the possible exception of the kickers) will live to reach old age, or at least not the lifespan their non-NFL peers will enjoy.

Make no mistake about it, modern football is just more bread and circuses.

  • There’s a reason why they call it the Stupor Bowl. The last time I watched was the year the Bears first were in, when Ditka and The Refrigerator were playing. 1983? 1984? 1986? Somewhere in there.

Stupor Bowl Sunday – the best day of the year to shop at consumer electronics stores to guarantee you won’t be confronted by the butt crack of some fatassed whiteboy.

  • I won’t be watching the game, not even for the commercials, which are usually fun and/or innovative. Never cared for football, probably because I have no respect for a game that’s supposed to take an hour or so that’s now dragged out to four hours or so. That, and I was in band all through school, and did more half-time shows than I care to remember, wearing a heavy sousaphone on my shoulder. I came to loathe and despise the game.

I do hope Seattle wins, though, since I lived there for ten years until I moved to Florida (Ft. Lauderdale area) in 2000.

  • Seattle will have beginner’s luck.

The Seahawks are going to start a tradition today.

Home of Hendrix, Kobain.Dan Savage, Scoop Jackson, Bill Gates,Musak,Starbucks,
and the most red heads in the world, will win 17 -10.

  • Kali, here in Pittsburgh, the Edgar Thompson Works produces as much steel as was produced in the 70s. Then there were 13 mills and today there is one but the amount of steel is the same.Unfortunately that production requires 55,000 fewer workers.
Steel is no fantasy in Pgh.

    Go Steelers

  • Tom, that was 1985. And I can remember when people went to Sears and the like to watch big TV events because the screens were better (as was the reception) than the tubes they had at home, so don’t be surprised if you go to one of the big box stores and discover crowds around the 54″ projection screen TVs.

  • You’re right, Link, there was acrowd, but thank God the guys with their pants too low and their cleavage too high were too drunk to drive. 🙂

  • TJM- i’m glad to hear that steel is no fantasy in Pittsburgh , and neither are the Steelers! Congratulations to the champs.
