Talk about damning with faint praise

Last week, at the bizarre “War on Christians” conference, pastor [tag]Rick Scarborough[/tag] presented [tag]Tom DeLay[/tag] as a martyr, compared DeLay to Jesus, and designated DeLay God’s official lawmaker.

“I believe the most damaging thing that Tom [tag]DeLay[/tag] has done in his life is take his faith seriously into public office, which made him a target for all those who despise the cause of Christ,” [tag]Scarborough[/tag] said, introducing DeLay yesterday. When DeLay finished, the host reminded the politician: “God always does his best work right after a crucifixion.”

Today, in response to DeLay’s announcement that he will resign from Congress, Scarborough tried to praise DeLay again, though this time, the right-wing preacher made a comparison he probably wishes he could take back.

“I’m proud of Tom’s participation in our landmark conference,” Scarborough said. “And I would remind the media that in America, a man — even a [tag]terrorist[/tag] suspect — is innocent until proven guilty.” (emphasis added)

Now, I think I know what Scarborough meant, but it’s kind of amusing to hear one of DeLay’s biggest fans inadvertently praise DeLay by comparing him to a terrorist.

Scarborough’s claim isn’t even true. Go ask Padilla.

  • “And I would remind the media that in America, a man — even a terrorist suspect — is innocent until proven guilty.”

    Tell that to Jose Padilla.

  • I love it when they blantly flant the double standerd like that. must be god’s will that he is an idiot.

  • DeLay (Santorum, too) has done more deep and lasting damage to our system of government — e.g., the K Street Project — than all the terrorists combined ever could.

  • Of course, when he says “terrorrist suspect”, he means as long as they are christian and their terrorism was bombing an abortion clinic. Anyone that is muslim is not a “suspect” because they are presumed guilty.

  • Reminds me of Wayne laPierre (NRA) wondering why people on a terrorist watch list should not be allowed to buy a gun 😉

Republicanite inconsistency is the result of their unnatural alliance of Libertarians, Know-Nothings, Pro-Business and Theocratic Reactionaries.

  • 2Manchu, I’d say great minds think alike, but great minds don’t use cliches.
I am obviously not a great typist.

  • “God always does his best work right after a crucifixion.”

Yeah, in Heaven, it’s always Miller Time.

Anyway, if the Rick Scarboroughs of the world are that interested in seeing some really great work on the part of the Almighty, I would be gratified to see them offer up a few more corrupt Republicans on the altar of martyrdom. Anything for the cause, I say.

  • I don’t know, look at this again: “I’m proud of Tom’s participation in our landmark conference,” Scarborough said. “And I would remind the media that in America, a man — even a terrorist suspect — is innocent until proven guilty.” Seems like maybe Rick knows that Delay is going to be indicted for terrorism too. 😉

  • When Tom DeLay got indicted he still had his silly grin and arrogant stance, talked that he was “happy in Christ.” I am sure the feeling isn’t mutual. The guy was in with Abramoff who was stealing from tribes; he taking funds illegally, and laundered it. On the “Right” side of the aisle they say “he did more good than bad” in the Senate! He did more to give the people more reason to mistrust the government. We vote for one whom we trust to make critical decisions. But being Bush’s buddy, he’ll probably get a pardon. You know, Nixon resigned, after being caught, and I respect that. There is even more for Bush to be indicted for, but he has too much big money backing him. It is frustrating to live under a corrupt government which is convinced the end justifies the means.
I hope everything that he ever did against the people gets discovered and he is imprisoned.

Women’s activist Gloria Feldt said, in her article in the ILF Post, a blog of the International Leadership Forum, “So the Hammer Finally Nailed Himself,” that she was disappointed because it would have been more fun to defeat Tom DeLay fair and square in November at the ballot box.

If the elections were a month or so after he was indicted, I would agree–sort of…still I wonder how many more crimes DeLay could commit and how many more people he’d have cheated between then and the November elections. So I am glad he’s out. Let’s get the rest of the rubber-stampers in Bu$h’$ deep pocket$.
