Ted Kennedy hospitalized

Let’s hope for the best.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts was hospitalized Saturday after suffering stroke-like symptoms, according to a knowledgeable official.

There was no immediate word on his condition.

The official who provided the information declined to be identified by name, citing the sensitivity of the events.

Hyannis Fire Lt. Bill Rex told The Associated Press that a 911 call came in from the Kennedy family compound at 8:19 a.m. A man was transported to Cape Cod Hospital and transferred by air at 10:10 a.m. from Barnstable Municipal Airport to Massachusetts General Hospital.

It’s obviously hard to know the severity, but the Boston Globe, which reported that the senator may have had a “seizure,” also noted that Kennedy family members “were called this morning and told to rush to Boston.”

I’ll update this if and when I learn more.

Update: This sounds encouraging: “One person close to the family said that after an initial scare, Kennedy intimates were reasonably optimistic Mr. Kennedy would recover quickly and fully. Another family friend described his medical condition as serious but not life-threatening.”

CNN’s Ed Henry just reported that Kennedy himself called a friend to cancel a lunch date today, while he was in the hospital. Sounds like a good sign.

  • CNN also just announced that he’s doing okay and they expect a full recovery. I certainly hope so — he’s been good for America.

  • #1 & #2 Good news for sure. I turned off the teevee before these new reports.

I don’t usually watch CNN. Do they usually stay on one story FOREVER even if there’s nothing new to report (which they did for at least 20 minutes with Kennedy when it first broke)? Isn’t there other news out there? (silly question, I know).

Thank goodness for the internet. Otherwise I’d never know anything important (since most teevee “news” and my local paper are both pretty lame).

  • Edward Kennedy is still a giant in the political world. His commitment to justice has never wavered. I’m hoping for a quick recovery.

  • I was just going to e-mail you and let you know about his BUT as usual, you are on top of any important BREAKing news.

My prays go out to this great senator and his family.

  • This should underscore the need to also pray for the continued health of an 87 year old Supreme Court Justice through this year. Otherwise, it’s two steps forward and a giant step backward for many years to come.

  • I hope Justice Stevens is well for a long time, but at this point in the game, his passing wouldn’t afford Bush much of a chance to get a replacement through.

Not much would happen over the summer. The Supreme Court is essentially on recess from June through October, so there’d be no pressing business to give the replacement any sense of urgency, and Congress is on summer recess for August, too.

By the time fall rolls around, we’d be deep into the general election campaign already and the Senate Dems could run out the clock on any proposal from Bush — he’s deeply unpopular and a lame duck, and the argument that the new president deserves to make the nomination would be popular. (Obama’s people would make the case to Dems easily enough, but McCain — hoping to distance himself from Bush — might have to as well.)

After the election, when Bush is officially a lame duck, the odds of him getting an appointment through the Democratic Senate are even slimmer.

So, yes, I hope Stevens is well, but I don’t think he’d be replaced by Bush’s pick.

  • I’m sure that May Jo Kopechne’s family is praying for him (or wait, liberals don’t beileve in God). Oh well, I’m sure the lion of Chappaquiiddick (he tried so hard to save her!) will pull through. The means always justifies the end. Pretend to ignore his true character if Teddy serves your own political agenda.

  • “…liberals don’t believe in God.”

So you know the theological beliefs of all liberals on the planet (after all, you didn’t write “most liberals don’t believe in God” or even “some liberals don’t believe in God”)? Barry Lynn and Jesse Jackson are pretty liberal guys, and they are both ordained ministers.

“I’m sure that May Jo Kopechne’s family is praying for him…”

Just as I’m sure the family of Michael Douglas (no, not Michael Douglas the actor, but the guy that Laura Bush killed when she ran a stop light) will be praying for Laura Bush if she ever runs into ill health.

Can we publish this on the first page of the Daily Kos to scream “SEE! RIGHT-WINGERS ARE HORRIBLE, NON-HUMANS WHO HAVE NO SHRED OF DECENCY!”

Which is, of course, what right-wingers said about liberals when Tony Snow had cancer and Dick Cheney had a heart attack in his knee. Although, as far as I can tell from this blog, nary was a negative word found regarding either during their trying times.

  • Single best news flash I’ve heard all week… interpret in your own way.

  • I was very sad to hear Ted Kennedy is in the hospital. I would have danced in the streets if he were in the morgue.

This treasonous commie bastard should have passed away years ago the way he sucks down the scotch.

Hopefully he will die soon and burn in hell forever!

  • why, that’s mighty Christian of ya there, Richard. peace be with you, too, and may God be less judgmental of you than you are of others.

  • “Single best news flash I’ve heard all week…interpret in your own way.

Here’s my “interpretation”…you’re a heartless bastard, you inbred imbecile.

“I would have danced in the streets if he were in the morgue.”

And, hopefully, someone witnessing this dancing would have given you a good smack in the face.

  • I’m sure he recovered to some degree due to the thousands of prayers received from conservatives who would have to retrain their entire following about who the most evil liberal was and probably have to throw away 1500 metric tons of mailing material they purchased in bulk in 1978.
