I guess it was unrealistic of me to expect Republican incompetence in Texas to last indefinitely. GOP majorities in the Texas Legislature have reached a compromise on the state’s congressional district boundaries and appear poised to pass Tom DeLay’s offensive re-redistricting plan.
To recap the last couple of weeks, Democratic lawmakers who had fled to New Mexico to deny a quorum in the legislature returned to discover that Republicans in the state House and Republicans in the state Senate were divided on how to redraw the lines in an unfair and legally dubious fashion.
Both sides agreed, of course, to gerrymander congressional districts to elect more GOP members of Congress, but the divisions on how to do so were so deep, it appeared the scheme may ultimately fail.
DeLay flew to Austin last week to head up three days of intense negotiations. It paid off; they reached an agreement late yesterday.
Debate will begin on Friday and Gov. Rick Perry (R) will sign the ridiculous scheme into law shortly thereafter.
