The DNC strikes back

To follow up on yesterday’s item, I’ve obtained a copy of the script of the [tag]DNC[/tag]’s new Spanish-language [tag]ad[/tag] on [tag]immigration[/tag].

To briefly recap, the [tag]RNC[/tag] unveiled a breathtakingly dishonest ad late last week on several Spanish-language radio stations in the West, accusing Dems of voting to “treat millions of hardworking immigrants as [tag]felons[/tag],” when in fact, [tag]Republicans[/tag] had done so.

This week, the Dems’ response will reach the same audience. The name of the ad is “Tough and Smart.” It’s broadcast in Spanish, but here’s the English translation.

“Democrats support tough and smart immigration reform. We want to strengthen our borders, as well as U.S. workers and their wages. We want immigrants who obey the law and pay taxes to be able to apply for U.S. citizenship. That’s immigration reform that matches American values: tough and smart.

“Now Republicans are lying to us. They control Congress and the White House, and in five years have done nothing. They’ve failed. If they wanted comprehensive immigration reform and to protect our borders, they would have done it already.

“But what Republicans and President Bush supported was a plan that would criminalize immigrants, families, doctors, and even churches just for giving communion.

“Call Republican Senator Bill Frist at 202-224-3135 and tell him to allow a vote on immigration reform.

Paid for by [tag]Democrat[/tag]ic National Committee. www.democrats.org. This communication not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. The DNC is responsible for the content of this advertising.”

According to National Journal, the ad will air “on radio stations nationally through Univision Radio affiliates, as well as in targeted markets in Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona,” and will reach [tag]Spanish[/tag]-language radio stations just as the RNC’s ads end their run.

Kudos to the DNC for using the “l” word.

Nice to know they have struck back.

  • We want to strengthen our borders, as well as U.S. workers and their wages.

So the Democrats are starting a weight lifting program for workers?

I hope that sentence works better in Spanish! 🙂

  • Nothing about the RNC directly lying to them, and nothing refuting the GOP claim with, well, say, the number of Republicans who voted for criminalization? I’ll give the DNC one nut on this, but not two.

  • That’s a pretty lame response. Why not outline the lies the Republicans are telling, and then give a better solution?

    Lame.

  • I think the reason there was such an outpouring of protest about this immigration bill was because it “criminalizes” immigrants and anyone who helps them. But using words like “criminalize” just doesn’t give a hard-hitting message. Why not say, “Republicans voted to make you a criminal, your priest a criminal, your family criminals and your doctor a criminal. They voted to put them in jail just for helping people.”

Something like that. No more John Kerry wonk-speak to the masses.

  • Actually, from what was said yesterday, these ads were made previous to the ads made by the Republicans. What the Democrats need to do is create some new ones after running these for a week or so outlining some more of the recent lies by the Republicans leveled at them, and be more hard-hitting at the same time.

  • I think the tenor of the ad sounds really good. I wish more of our stuff sounded like that. Nice, short sentences.

“Now Republicans are lying to us.”

“They control Congress and the White House, and in five years have done nothing. They’ve failed.”

“If they wanted comprehensive immigration reform and to protect our borders, they would have done it already.”

I mean, those are perfect. That stuff communicates.

  • Kudos to the Democrats for fighting back with a strong ad. However, I agree with Marve in comment #7 above that they should follow-up with ads describing specific lies the Republicans have more recently made concerning immigration reform–perhaps with audio clips identifying the Republicans who stated the lies.

Let’s make the Republicans accountable for their own actions and inactions.

  • Go Howard Dean! The only thing I would have added is putting the bill number in the add. I went to the rally in L.A. that was 500k strong, and every other person had a sign with the HR……, whatever it is.
