The durability of the chain (email) gang

Just this morning, I received several chain emails making a series of ridiculous claims about Barack Obama. I immediately thought, “Haven’t we already been through this?”

We have, of course, seen these baseless smears for nearly a year now, and they’ve been thorough and repeatedly debunked. It occurred to me, though, that the typical person a) may not have seen the email smears the first time around; and ) may not have heard how false they are. Well-intentioned people who don’t know better might not realize how spectacularly stupid these lies really are.

There are, apparently, a few different emails making the rounds, so it’s probably best to take on all of the various claims at once, just for future reference.

Claim: “Why does Obama not participate in saying the ‘Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America’?”

Truth: Obama does participate in saying the Pledge, and has done so throughout his life. The claim is false.

Claim: “Have you or anyone else ever seen Obama with his hand over his heart while the National Anthem is being played?”

Fact: During the Pledge, he recites it with his hand over his heart. During the National Anthem, he sings. The U.S. Code makes it optional: “[W]e spoke with Anne Garside, director of communication for the Maryland Historical Society — home of the original manuscript of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and asked if anyone could be punished for not placing their hands over their hearts during the national anthem. She quickly replied, ‘Oh, of course not,’ adding that ‘there is no obligation to put your hand over your heart.’ Garside told us she has been asked numerous times about this rumor and finds the controversy to have ‘gotten a little bit ridiculous.'”

Claim: “Are you aware that Obama’s middle name is Mohammed?”

Fact: His middle name is “Hussein.”

Claim: To join Obama’s Christian church in Chicago, you “need to be…black.”

Fact: Rush Limbaugh and Fox News have repeated this claim on the air, and it’s false. Martin Marty, a professor of theology at the University of Chicago Divinity School, said last April: “To those in range of Chicago TV I’d recommend a watching of Trinity’s Sunday services, and challenge you to find anything ‘cultic’ or ‘sectarian’ about them. More important, for Trinity, being ‘unashamedly black’ does not mean being ‘anti-white.’ My wife and I on occasion attend, and, like all other non-blacks, are enthusiastically welcomed.” He later added that the email “is vicious and lying, and makes my blood boil.”

Claim: Obama is “possibly a covert worshiper of the Muslim faith, even today.”

Fact: This is from the same email that attacks Obama’s Christian church, which seems odd. The smear artists should probably at least read their own emails before sending them out — Obama can’t be a radical Christian and a Muslim at the same time. (He is, of course, neither.)

Claim: Obama “spent two years in a Muslim school” in Indonesia.

Fact: No, he didn’t.

Claim: “Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim while admitting that he was once a Muslim.”

Fact: Obama was never a Muslim, so he has nothing to conceal.

Claim: Obama has “been a US Senator for about 100 days, give or take a week.”

Fact: Obama was elected in 2004, and has served in elected office for 12 years.

Claim: “When [Obama] was sworn into office he DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran.”

Fact: Actually, that was Rep. Keith Ellison (D) of Minnesota, Congress’ only Muslim. Obama used the Christian Bible, and there’s a picture to prove it.

Like Obama or don’t. Vote for him or vote for someone else. But these smears are just so unbelievably stupid, it’s amazing to think anyone would send them to friends and family.

If (when) you get these emails, feel free to refer people to this post.

I heard a local FM radio caller list these out the other day. Aha! So it’s a chain mail…

Let me copy and paste your responses and e-mail the station… thanks Steve

  • Obviously no one could be punished for not placing their hand over their heart during the national anthem– that would be a gross violation of the First Amendment. The point is that it’s a matter of etiquette enshrined in the U.S. Code, not that there are legal sanctions for failing to do so. Of course, the criticism is still nonsense because really, who cares? I don’t place my hand over my heart either, though not being a sports fan I haven’t attended a performance of the national anthem in years. But pointing out that it’s not illegal to decline to place your hand over your heart seems non-responsive to the criticism that it’s nevertheless un-patriotic to do so, and gives that silly argument more superficial validity than it deserves.

  • Whenever I get this sort of email (whether about Obama or about some other lame-brained right-wing conspiracy) I always make a point of responding to EVERY EMAIL ADDRESS in the post. The tone I use is one of respect for the sender, making clear I’m certain they wouldn’t want to share false information (when it comes from my brother-in-law, I’m sure he DOES want to spread false info, but that’s another matter. He stopped copying me on this crap when I started to respond anyway). I usually say that something in the message caught my eye so I looked it up at Snopes.com. Then I go on to debunk point by point, just as you did here, with references so it’s clear I’m not presenting a he-said/she-said.

I used to just respond to the sender, but then there are all those people who saw the wrong info, and never get the right info.

  • My sister in Chicago operates a small travel company – http://www.bargelady.com – and one of her employees asked her last week if it was true that Obama was a Muslim. I was on the phone with my sister – who’s a Clintonite – when the young employee asked her this and we BOTH told her, “no, of course not, he’s Christian”.

I really don’t know where the Obama-nonsense will pop up next.

  • Welcome to the wonderful world of national politics. Since repeating slanders repeatedly works so well and brainwashes everyone, even those who think they are immune, then pump up the action and start with the other opposition candidates.

    My suggestions:

Hillary is the devil incarnate. (oops, already in use)
Barrack is the muslim devil incarnate.

  • I don’t put my hand over my heart either, and I attend lots of sporting events. It is a jesture rich in style; unfortunately in today’s civics style is more important then substance.

  • Thank you, CB, for this handy guide to debunking this crap. Fortunately, the only people who are gullible enough to believe the lies would have voted Republican anyway.

The Tulsa World website accepts anonymous comments. Today I reported a comment to the TW editors that contained a lot of the same crap (in illiterate prose), as well as a death threat – something about “a couple of bullets.” I haven’t heard back from them, but now they have removed ALL comments from that page.

There are some scary people out there. Lance, I know what you are thinking.

  • Okie, they can see who you are even if the comments are anonymous. I like you, don’t get in trouble OK?

BTW, you’re right about “the only people who are gullible enough to believe the lies would have voted Republican anyway.”

  • REPLY to Obama email attack! Even if you don’t intend to vote for him!

If you have received the slandering email about Obama, send the following email (or your own version) back to the sender, and to any addy in the cc: or the text of the email:
    ___________________________________________________________

You have sent me this email which is offends and frightens me, and which is simply wrong. It states – falsely – that Barack Obama is a radical Muslim who is a threat to America. These and other erroneous allegations were made by some cowardly and hateful scoundrel who has no understanding of, nor respect for, true Christian values or American ideals. If you go to http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp you’ll find all of them refuted.

I’m assuming you forwarded this nastiness on to me, and our friends and family, out of ignorance, not with any malevolent intent. I’m also assuming you will make it right by acknowledging your error and sending an apology to me and to everyone else to whom you have passed this poison. And I am asking you to forward this email, or one similar to it, to whomever sent the offensive email to you in the first place, cc:ing it to everyone else who received it.

  • For the national anthem:
    Stand
Take off your hat / cap
Put your hand over your heart
    Sing

Those are the various things that people do – I do not recall anyone refraining from standing at recent events for which the anthem was played. The next three actions are engaged in quite spottily, and I do not recall anyone (with the exception of an older guy getting exercised about someone keeping his cap on at a UW football game) expressing consternation, surprise, or disapproval at those who did not choose to express the full measure of anthem antivity. What’s more, I think if anyone did deign to criticize me for failure to put my hand over my heart would find him/herself being told in no uncertain terms to mind his/her own business.

People who “worry” about crap like this or judge Obama by this sort of false information are looking for reasons to feel comfortable with their predisposition to think him unfit for the Oval Office. I agree with Brett Richardson that their civics is “rich” in style and lacking in substance.

  • “…the only people who are gullible enough to believe the lies would have voted Republican anyway.” — Okie and RacerX

I’m not sure that’s true among the elderly. As my 80+year-old mom and dad’s tech support, I know they gets this kind of stuff on a daily basis from other old-timers who apparently have nothing to do but spread rabid right-wing lies and warn of dangerous liberal conspiracies.Talk about viral.

But the worst of it is that these old-timers don’t know what to believe and what not to believe. I must have spent two hours over the Christmas holiday debunking the notion that America was not founded as a Christian nation, that ID was a bogus fabrication, and that they really shouldn’t move to Canada if HRC gets elected — particularly since they managed to survive in the US while GWB was in office these past years.

Worth mentioning is that my folks aren’t out of it yet — not only do they vote, but Mom still works the polls in their little town just as she has for the past 30 years. And they’re registered Democrats.

  • re 13: Sorry folks, but a correction…

“I must have spent two hours over the Christmas holiday debunking the notion ARGUING that America was not founded as a Christian nation, that ID was a bogus fabrication, and that they really shouldn’t move to Canada if HRC gets elected — particularly since they managed to survive in the US while GWB was in office these past years.”

  • I don’t understand why human beings are so ritualistic and ceremonial. I’ve got a codicil in my will that says I won’t attend my own funeral because I can’t stand ceremonies.
Form over substance, every time, it seems. Even with religion. As if you could fool this god that nearly everyone believes in by praying out loud and talking a good game and browning him up.

I stopped saying the Pledge when I was seventeen. Aside from objecting to compulsory and public attestations of loyalty and faith, I found the first phrase, “I pledge allegiance to the FLAG,” to be ridiculous. Why would anyone pledge allegiance to a symbol? And the “under God” thing I found to be abhorrent, and unconstitutional. But as a matter of courtesy, I stand when it’s repeated at public events.

As for the national anthem, I also stand out of respect for others, but don’t place my hand over my heart, and I don’t sing, partly because I can’t sing, and partly because I can’t stand this thing – I’ve heard it a billion times in my 66 years. Enough is enough.

I just don’t understand why this empty symbolism is so important to so many people.

I know that’s not the point of this post. I’m taking liberties deliberately.

In case anyone gets the wrong idea, I am patriotic, and I think this is a great country, but our finest hour has long passed. It came during World War II, and the aftermath, when we defeated a true enemy of humanity, and created the great middle class.

  • It bothered me very much to get that email from someone (who lives in NH, as I do) last Monday evening. The person had sent it to everybody she could think of, too. *sigh*

    Very lame.

  • I have received these types of “junk” email from ignorant family and friends in the past and always reply to let them know they are misinformed, with links to snopes or factcheck.

My sis sent me one in 2004 that I’m sure was written by Karl Rove or Dick Cheney. It was supposedly from a mom who was soooooo scared that the boogie men would be on their way to get her and her family were John Kerry to be elected. The fear-mongering was almost comical. Which became tragic with the “re-election” of bush.

Re this one on Obama, I may just send it pre-emptively. Since they now know I was right in 2004 (ie bush is an idiot and liar), they should listen to me, right? (ha!)

I agree with whomever said to reply to all. We’ve got to educate as many as possible.

  • My comments regard the “controversy” of Obama not placing his hand over his heart during the pledge or national anthem. As a 23-year military veteran, people should be aware that protocol for military people (in uniform) requires that they NOT put their hand over their heart during either event. When outside, military personnel salute the flag when the national anthem is played. Indoors, uniformed personnel stand at attention–but NEVER place their hand over the heart. During the pledge of allegiance, uniformed military personnel are to stand at attention and never put their hand over the heart. Obama is in good company when he leaves his hands at his sides.

My point in this is, the average American has no idea what’s proper during these public displays of patriotism. If Barack doesn’t put his hand over his heart, he’s right in line with every military person in the crowd. People need to…get…a…life. Patriotism lives in the heart, not in some public show like wearing a flag lapel pin in the manner of every Republican politician.

  • Obama’s middle name is “HUSSEIN”????

Oh, my God, how can I vote for him now?

    /sarcasm off/

  • I’ve gotten this email twice from friends and family. The first time I replied “These filthy fibber mouths want to win their campaign on lies!” which got a muted/bad response. The second time I went more diplomatic “This email references Snopes.com as it’s source which specifically refutes these claims.” That got a much more positive response.

  • I was thrown out of the American Legion for not saying the Pledge. I always stood, crossed my hands in front of me, bowed my head slightly and prayed for the Legion, my post and its efforts. No one in the post noticed for two years until I became Adjutant of the District and was placed in front at a district meeting and another member from another post called my post to complain.

After returning from Vietnam, and having a spiritual experience, I felt that FOR ME the pledge was putting some thing before my aliegence to God, and FOR ME was treating the flag as a false idol.

My case eventually went to the Judge Advocate General of teh American Legion in the United States who pointed out that Jehovah’s Witnesses, athiests, citizens from other countries (who are eligible to join the Legion as WWII vets) and religous people such as myself often do not say the pledge.

The local officers were required to come to my house, apologize to me for conduct unbecoming officers in the Legion (the very thing I was accused of origionally) violating the constitution of the Legion and the by laws, and at the next Legion meeting, to apologize to the post and on behalf of the post who voted for my expulsion.

  • I am very curious and sometimes a little PO’d that Barack Obama is constantly referred to as a BLACK MAN…his mother was white!! When I hear my friends or family referring to him as a black man it drives me nuts…why does he not ever mention, or his handlers mention, that he is half-white?
The way of the world, one would hope, is that color of skin shouldn’t matter but when I hear the quote, “this country will never elect a black man as president”….I go bonkers. Why doesn’t he address this issue or is there some dark shady secret “they” want to keep in the closet about his Mom?
I take my vote very seriously and thus far still can’t make up my mind between Clinton and Obama inspite of all my reading and researching. This particular subject is one I would like to be enlightened on.

  • I am not satisfied with my first response.

Patricia Santos is not only a real amateur and irony-impaired to boot. Imagine trying this on the comment thread of a post devoted to the topic of planted “concerns” about Obama.

Patricia, I will continue to pretend you are seriously raising an issue that’s troubling to you. Let me see if I can help you out. First, you suggest that a white parent renders someone not black in this country. If that is your real impression of how society views mix-race individuals, I implore you to educate yourself (“one drop rule” might be a good place to start, and if you like old movies you might try the “Imitation of Life” — either version).

Second, you confess that hearing Obama called BLACK “drives you nuts.” Please, get on some medication if your nerves are that fragile.

Then, you claim that Obama and his handlers hardly ever mention his mother — conveniently overlooking the website, just about every official bio, his extensive discussion on his experience as a mixed-race person in books, and a speech about the civil rights movement that got enough coverage to be the source of OTHER lies about Obama. If the campaign is trying to keep her whiteness a secret, they’re doing a pretty poor job.

I’m sorry if if drives you “bonkers” (again, try some meds) to hear folks speculate about whether Obama’s race will hurt his chances. But you yourself are living proof that it is an issue. Lately, also, we can point to the folks pretending to be all concerned that Barack will be assassinated if elected. These folks then offer the “helpful” suggestion that blacks have a duty to withhold their vote from Obama to protect him from this fate.

Your “innocent” speculation about some dark, shady secret (pun intended?) concerning Obama’s deceased, white mother is something I would ordinarily not dignify with a response, except that Team Hillary has been (through surrogates) hinting for months now that they have some dirt on Obama that they’re awaiting the right moment to unveil.

In closing, your sanctimonious reminder that YOU take your vote seriously was a nice finishing touch.

  • I’m glad to see there are others that “reply all” back with links to the factual information on these darn letters, and asks them to “reverse the chain”. Not everyone that has heard from me seems to appreciate it. 🙂

People really are so gullible sometimes! In the amount of time it takes to click forward and add the names someone wants to send it on to, one can go to Google or another search engine, type in some terms, and find out the validity instead of spreading misinformation. This one is particularly raunchy though, playing upon people’s fears as it does.

  • You can attempt to hide your true feelings but they always come out eventually. The facts are facts, Obama was raised as a Muslim. The problem that I have is that he is not just outright and unabashedly truthful about it. Most people inherit the beliefs of their parents and role models, he had several extremist muslim role models that he looked up to. I just cannot believe that someone who had these beliefs drilled into their heads changes their entire belief system, it just DOES NOT HAPPEN. Obama has way to many secrets and is relatively unknown in his true political ideology, let him run a few more terms as Senator Obama so that we can gauge his ideology against his claimed ideology.
