Laura Bush, on how the national anthem should be sung.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong with singing it in Spanish. The point is it’s the United States national anthem and what people want is it to be sung in a way that respects the United States and our culture. At the same time, we are a nation of immigrants. We are a nation of many, many languages, because immigrants come and bring their languages.”

Laura Bush, 25 seconds later, after being reminded that her husband believes differently.

“I think it should be sung in English, of course.”

That’s a pretty impressive turn-around, even by Bush standards.

Maybe they’re both on crack cocaine now.

Or maybe, since they’ve learned to “speak in tongues” whenever they get their marching orders from The Deity, ordinary languages (even the Regal Moron’s peculiar versions of English and Spangish) don’t mean anything to either of them anymore.

  • I am surprised the Secret Service agents in attendance didn’t grab her. Turning that quickly could give you a dangerous case of whiplash!

  • Laura, Laura…the last remotely respectable inhabitant of the White House…even you…say it isn’t so?

    She also said that the “Mission Accomplished” sign was just meant to say that that particular carrier’s mission had been accomplished.

    They really shouldn’t send her out to do W’s bidding. I kinda feel sorry for her.

  • Of course, she might have meant that it’s OK to sing it in spanish but it should be sung in english.

  • This story is the political equivalent of the the “missing white woman” phenomenon. I am astounded that it continues to have legs. What I want to know is how the anti-gang violence project that Laura is heading up is going? How are any of the projects assigned to her during SOTU speeches progressing? And, BTW, does she think the twins ought to be signing up to serve their country, which is at WAR?
    Sorry, I am feeling particularly cynical this morning.

  • Well at least she didn’t flip-flop! That would mean she held one position, then changed it. No. What Laura did was try to hold two contradictory positions, simultaneously. That’s called talking through both legs of your shorts.

    simple.

    I think it’s remarkable, and commendable,
    that the left has spared Laura and the
    wayward Bush daughters from their scathing
    attacks over the past five years. Instead, they,
    we, have focused on the policies of the
    Bush administration, and the ineptitude of
    the characters carrying them out.

    For those who aren’t acquainted with hate
    radio, I can tell you that not a program
    went by in the 1990s without hosts and
    callers alike attacking not just Bill
    personally, but Hillary and Chelsea too.
    These right wingers were vicious and
    cruel in their jokes and comments, and it
    simply amazed me that they could do
    this. How could they pick on Chelsea?
    She was just a kid. Private jokes are one
    thing. But ugly duckling jokes over the
    airwaves? Have they no humanity
    whatsoever?

    Just an observation in the are right wingers
    and liberals really different department.

  • Good comments, hark. I remember G. Gordon Liddy joking, over and over on his radio show, about how he entertained his nephews at a family get together by teaching them to machine gun cardboard cut-outs of Bill, Hillary and Chelsea attatched to poles around his property. The GOP’s (and the press’s) treatment of Chelsea, in particular, was loathesome. But then you can’t expect much from people who get an invigorating rush from the comedy of a NASCAR wipeout.

Where the hell is “Homeland Security”!? Sounds like a rightwing terrorist training camp don’t it!

  • Is his wife the only one to use those guns too? If not, let’s get going and Gitmotize this bastich. Maybe if some of these neocons got a first hand taste of the crap they promote, they might not be so quick to promote it.
