The master of suspense

The AP reports that Fitzmas will apparently have to wait until tomorrow.

Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald huddled with his legal team Thursday as two key White House aides awaited their fate in the CIA leak probe.

A spokesman for the prosecutor said there would be no public announcements Thursday. The term of the grand jury that could bring indictments expires Friday.

Let’s hope the announcements worth waiting for.

Boy, if you think it’s bad for us, image being the Boy Genius or Scooter right now.

I almost feel sorry for ’em…

  • … I almost feel sorry for ’em…

Allow me to get your blood back up:

Think about all the Iraqi children who got blown to pieces because these guys were willing to lie…

  • As far as the suspense goes,
    don’t the targets pretty much
    know? They got their letters,
    didn’t they? So don’t the
    White House, all the insiders
already know? Plus the plea bargain
    deals beforehand? Am I missing
    something?

And since the White House hasn’t
    suddenly, mysteriously collapsed,
    can’t we deduce that it’s not a
    bombshell?

  • Suspense, deadlines, uncertainty, cause FEAR. Any interrogator (or screenwriter or novelist) knows this. It’s the WAITING that terrifies people. At first I wondered how this guy knew how to manipulate the media so well. The commenter who asked “what does this feel like for Rove?” answered it for me.

Fitz doesn’t give a shit about the media; that’s not who he’s manipulating so expertly. He’s trying to manipulate ROVE AND LIBBY! That’s why he’s run such a tight operation with no leaks– he’s playing poker with Rove and Libby. This is a standard hardball prosecutor’s trick: he’s trying to get them to cop a plea and turn against Cheney and Shrub!

    Brilliant.

This is a guy who has prosecuted mobsters; he knows exactly how to intimidate them. He’s had them in terror for months. They know he has a hard deadline. At this point he’s probably put at least some of his cards on the table for them. He’s probably hit them with indictments, or the threat of them, offered them a plea bargain, and instructed them to “think it over; you have until Friday”.

    And here it comes.

  • Friday!?! But Friday’s right out. Friday news gets absorbed into the weekend. A Friday announcement will suck some of the wind out of this.

I’m guessing that we’ll have to wait until Monday, with an uber-insider leaking to the Sunday show chatterers; giving them some sort of heads-up. Not with the details, but to get them chattering about it. Or at least that’s how I’d do it. In fact, a Sunday chattering about a Monday announcement would be even that much more suspenseful when it gets put off until Tuesday. Of course, that’s what I thought was happening this week. Anticipation just makes the goodies taste that much gooder.
