The McCain-Norquist smackdown

Well, at least we know who started it. Uber-activist Grover Norquist, speaking to the national conference of College Republicans over the weekend, called John McCain “the nut-job from Arizona.” Asked to elaborate, Norquist later joked that he was misquoted, and he meant to call McCain “the gun grabbing tax increaser from Arizona.”

Yesterday, McCain’s office issued a response.

“There’s never been a shortage of blowhards and bores in this town. I’m sure Grover is comfortable in their crowded ranks, but that hardly merits the attention he craves. I assume he wants to provoke us, but it’s hard to work up much interest for someone who in his continued warm embrace of Jack Abramoff is doing a more than adequate job of marginalizing himself.

Most Reagan revolutionaries came to Washington to do something more patriotic than rip off Indian tribes.”

First, I’d say it’s McCain 1, Norquist 0.

Second, and more importantly, McCain is right on the substance here and Norquist’s well-documented ties to Abramoff and the bilking of Indian tribes should permanently destroy Norquist’s reputation. Indeed, McCain held hearings last week that revealed, among other things, Norquist having once asked Abramoff to steer Choctaw Indian money his way to cover a “hole” in his budget.

The irony, I suppose, is that Jack Abramoff was legendary for delivering favors to the right. Now, through revelations about his criminal corruption, Abramoff has become a valuable gift to the left.

Norquist’s well-documented ties to Abramoff and the bilking of Indian tribes should permanently destroy Norquist’s reputation.

Funny, one would think that Norquist calling the Greatest Generation Anti-American should have done that. Or comparing progressive taxation to the holocaust. Or comparing Democratic legislators to neutered farm animals. (Well, given recent events, I’m not sure about that last one.)

Here’s the deal. Norquist has positioned himself to control the flow of lobbyist payola to the Republicans. Nothing will unseat him until the Republicans are themselves unseated. Of course, if the Democrats had a spine, they’d be stapling Grover Norquist and his nasty rhetoric to the foreheads of every Republican in Congress, but for some reason, they don’t do that.

  • The reason they don’t do what paperwight suggests above is because they too often act like neutered farm animals. Go Howard Dean!! Kick some ass.

  • Norquist won’t suffer as much as sane people might like him to. He is too influential and too connected and frankly too like the Washington version of the GOP – that would be like going after themselves.

  • We should all hope he stays right where he is and keeps up the good work. The last thing you want are the sleazy-crazies figuring out that they need to hide their true nature.

This is all coming around nicely to the Dems getting their collective heads out of their arses, and the nut-jobs hanging themselves. Let them keep buying rope.

  • Wow, that was some shot by McCain. I’d say it was a 10-8 round, according to the rules of boxing.
