‘The Party of Race’

Occasionally, an article is published that is so spectacularly stupid, you have to assume the writer was kidding. That, or someone wrote the piece under someone else’s name, as a way of trying to make them appear foolish.

Jeffrey Lord, a former Reagan White House political director, has written just such a piece for The American Spectator. TNR’s Isaac Chotiner received it from a friend, whom Isaac assumed had fallen for a gag. Alas, it’s real and Lord isn’t kidding.

What do ex-New York Times editor Howell Raines, ex-Duke rape case prosecutor Mike Nifong, former Edwards for President blogger Amanda Marcotte, Delaware Senator Joe Biden and the call by Democrats to get out of Iraq have in common? … In a word, a sad word: race. (emphasis added) […]

Are critics of the Democrats insistence that Iraq is another Vietnam-style quagmire missing an all too obvious sign of the party traumatized by race? What, after all, do Vietnamese and Iraqi’s have in common? They are people of…color. It is striking that Democratic Party history shows a repeated pattern of wanting to declare failure and come home in the Civil War, Vietnam and Iraq or opposed involvement in Grenada, the first Gulf War over Kuwait or stopping the genocide in Rwanda — all wars that involved liberating non-whites.

How in the world does a political party that once had white Southerners voting for it as a block (the so-called “solid South”) reach the point where they continually get 90% of the vote opposite race? Is it not a learned ability that is at once insidious, skillful and persistent to play out the politics of race, the very heart of the trauma that has been at its cumulative center from the beginning of its history?

Lord’s psycho-babble explanation for all of this is especially entertaining.

As he sees it, children suffer emotional trauma that blocks development later in life. Lord believes — really, he’s not kidding — that Democrats suffer from “cumulative trauma” that exists as a result of the political party “maturing” after having dealt with slavery as a young party two centuries ago.

While it is understandably pushed under the rug at all those Jefferson-Jackson Day dinners, not to mention seemingly ignored altogether at party gatherings, the hard, inescapable fact of life for Democrats is that the Party’s “childhood” or formative years was brutally traumatized by the support of slavery. Just as an individual child could be traumatized for life by growing up in a home where a pattern of alcoholism or drug addiction later created an adult incapable of maintaining healthy relationships, one looks at the seemingly instinctive if not unconscious reactions by Democrats — almost any Democrat — to any issue involving race and sees a very distinctive pattern.

They are stuck on race.

I’ve never seen a dumber political idea put in print. Ever.

How in the hell did these guys get credentialed in the government to begin with? As a kid I worried with my folks as they complained about Reagan’s policies and beliefs, but little did I know he was, in a way, setting us all up to endure these so-called “experts” and intellectuals as they spew forth ideology-driven nonsense.

One can only hope reason will win in the end.

  • This seems like pretty straightforward projection. There’s a major political party in America that’s screwed up about race, but it’s not the Democrats.

This also reminds me of a great point Josh Marshall has made a few times over the years: media types frequently refer to the fact that, were it not for African-American voters, Democrats wouldn’t win this or that election contest–as if those voters are somehow illegitimate. The counter-argument–that Republicans couldn’t ever win without the overwhelming support of the bigoted (admittedly tougher to quantify) or the religious fanatics (easier)–is not brought up nearly as often.

  • This is right up there with the piece in the other post about evolution being a “Kabbalistic religion.”

I hereby now declare as a creative writer that I do not have the imagination necessary to believe that righties can believe and say what righties believe and say. They constantly amaze me and leave me shaking my head in shame that I could never conceive that a human being could believe such utter crap.

  • If only we understood that being the reason for over 100,000 Iraqi deaths in the last few years was for their own good. The uplifting of their race. So that they can be like us more advanced whites.

  • The NeoCon Crack Up continues!

This isn’t psycho-babble, it is a psycho babbbling. I can’t even make sense of what he’s trying to say. Democrats, brown people, war! Chickens! Abatement! Coo-coo-ca-choo!

(And I notice he doesn’t mention Bosnia or Somalia.)

    Must make more popcorn.

  • Does anyone still read The American Spectator? I thought that once Clinton was out of office they lost their only reason to exist, smearing the big dog.

  • Anything to keep from looking inward for the conservative movement. Lord’s infantile essay may keep the accusatory voices quiet in head, but for how long?

  • So he’s claiming being a Democrat is an inhierited trait? That it’s GENETIC? It’s a Bell Curve kinda thing? Did the April Fool’s issue of the American Spectator come out too soon?

  • This guy is a clueless idiot. Any halfway observant persone would seethat in large measure most of the Dixicrats/Yellow Dog Democrats (that ran the southern Democratic party) and their progeny are now Republicans. Seriously. Hell he worked for Reagan! Does he not remember that this was when the shift started – and in part explains a Reagan presidency. I always like to say that Reagan made it ok for southern good old boys to become Republican despite it being the party of Lincoln and Reconstruction.

  • “We’re not racists!!! Why, only a century-and-a-half ago, a Republican freed the slaves!!! Whereas forty years ago, before they passed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, the Dems had those racist Dixiecrats (who switched parties and now constitute our base).

And the only reason almost all Blacks vote for Democrats is that they’re stupid!! It’s not because we’re racist!! Because we aren’t!!!! YOU HEAR ME???? Hey, where are you going?”

  • Bullshit…it’s not race…it’s wealth vs poverty always and ultimately. I heard it on Air America that… “if it weren’t for the guilt of the wealthy there would be no charity”. I say that if corporations want to be treated as individuals with individual rights then they must die like individuals which includes being embalmed or cremated.
