The Plame Game end game

Here we are. After two years of breathless anticipation, the Plame Game criminal investigation may very well be wrapped up within the next few days.

The federal prosecutor investigating who leaked the identity of a CIA operative is expected to signal within days whether he intends to bring indictments in the case, legal sources close to the investigation said on Wednesday.

As a first step, prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was expected to notify officials by letter if they have become targets, said the lawyers, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Fitzgerald could announce plea agreements, bring indictments, or conclude that no crime was committed. By the end of this month he is expected to wrap up his nearly two-year-old investigation into who leaked CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity.

So, who, if anyone, has received a dreaded “target” letter from Fitzgerald’s office? Only the players and their attorneys know for sure, but the scuttlebutt is already intense.

For example, consider the fact that Karl Rove’s attorney, Robert Luskin, has never been shy about telling reporters that his client is not a target of this investigation — until yesterday when Luskin “declined to say whether his client had been contacted by Fitzgerald.” Hmm.

The rumor mill is working overtime right now. Two things to keep in mind: 1) I’m always interested in hearing some of those rumors; and 2) we may know what’s what as early as today. Stay tuned.

I saw AmericaBlog mention that Rove has been steering clear of meetings he used to attend all the time.

It’s like the night before Christmas and I can’t wait to see what’s underneath the wrapping!

  • If I could find a bar that would cover this like Super Bowl Sunday (beer specials, taco buffet big screen TV’s etc.) I would soooo be there to watch! We can call if Perp walk Friday!

I’m bracing for dissapointment but hoping for the best!

Is it possible the Scooter got a letter (or got wind of a letter) and that was the reason Judith Miller was sprung this week?

  • I would prefer that Fitzgerald & co wait until Monday to reveal any targets. Let’s get the most out of this that we can. Don’t pull a Bush and announce bad news on a Friday!!!

  • Don’t pull a Bush and announce bad news on a Friday!!!

That’s a good point, but I don’t want to wait that long. How about today?

  • What I don’t understand…WHY IS THIS NOT BREAKING NEWS ON CNN? I have yet to find this on my morning peruse of the major news websites. And, since the story broke in July 2003, the Carpetbagger has been one of the only places I can find mention of it, unless I do a serious Google. THIS IS A HUGE STORY! Treason involving the White House at its highest levels!!! Yet no one seems to know about it!!!

  • Katie…There was at least one thread about this possibility on “DailyKos” last night…and lots of comments.

  • If you look here: http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/06/sr.thurs/index.html

    You find this:

Keep scrolling down, it is there. Apparently CNN got it from Yahoo News.

Katie, I agree 100% with you! If we take a peek at the front page of CNN.com we see articles about:
    1) increasing Bicycle sales
    2) An English Cleric calling Harry Potter gay
    3) Nick and Jessica breaking up
    4) the New York Yankees

Searching CNN for Fitzgerald returns 10 items since 7/15/2005 the vast majority of which are about Judith Miller going up the river.

This is sad and a serious serious problem.
