The public has noticed

In November, NBC released a poll showing that Americans preferred Dems take the majority in Congress, 48% to 37%. The 11-point gap is the widest enjoyed by either party on that question since the poll began asking it in 1994.

It’s only gotten worse for Republicans since.

In an ominous election-year sign for Republicans, Americans are leaning sharply toward wanting Democrats to take control of Congress, an AP-Ipsos poll finds. Democrats are favored 49% to 36%.

The poll was taken this week as Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty to tax evasion, fraud and corruption charges and agreed to aid a federal investigation of members of Congress and other government officials. […]

About a third of the public, 34%, approves of the job Congress is doing, and nearly twice as many, 63%, disapprove, according to the poll of 1,001 adults taken Jan. 3-5.

There are some Republican leaders who are convinced that the corruption nightmare surrounding Congress is just a inside-the-beltway story. “Real” people don’t know and don’t care about Cunningham’s resignation, DeLay’s indictments, Frist’s investigation, and the unknown number of lawmakers soon to be implicated by Abramoff.

But polls like this one suggest people are at least tacitly aware of what’s happening on Capitol Hill; they’re not happy about it; and they’re ready to vote for a change.

Some people say they are leaning toward giving Democrats control of Congress because they want to see changes.

“I just don’t like the direction our country is going in,” said Steve Brown, a political independent from Olympia, Wash. “I think a balance of power would be beneficial right now.”

Consider this your morale boost for the day.

This is good news as far as it goes, but I’m
afraid as soon as a real Democrat shows
up on the ballot, with no agenda and no
positions other than Republican Lite, the
voters will choose the real Republican
again. The devil you know . . . , especially
since Americans believe all Congressmen
are devils, Repubs or Dems.

We need a poll that asks the right
questions. This is generalized, abstract,
hypothetical. Not down and dirty: all
right, are you going to support your
Republican or Democratic candidate?

  • How does this survey fit in with the surveys that demonstrate that the “see-saw effect” isn’t happening? I’ve seen polls claiming that the democrat’s approval rating isn’t particularly going up, and that worries me.

  • Hey CB,

Tom DeLay just resigned his majority leader post in the House…wonder when Rove made the call telling him he had to go???…

Remember that public relations push of December 2005 (was it just a month ago) with Bush re-claiming the agenda???…in light of the NSA spying, the Abramoff and DeLay scandals (and the wreck of the K Street project), the body armor revelations, and now the AP poll showing Congressional Dem’s way ahead – I think Rove will have to send Bush out on the road in a flesh-colored body suit and two feathered fans before the spotlight returns to him…lol.

  • With the curious impulse of our presidents to undo themselves in the second term.. (Clinton/ monica Regan/ Contra Nixon/Watergate) , I have every confidence that in the years left to him… Bush will redouble his already commendable efforts to heap disgrace upon his administration and his party. With a guy so self-destructive. , look for record breaking negative poll numbers in the future for the republicans.

  • I hate to use cliche’s, but but we don’t want to count the chickens before the eggs are hatched………………..

However, we can hope and we need to work harder to get rid of these fucking bastards.

  • as far as corruption goes, the dems only need a few cysts and tumors removed and some followup treatment- the repugs on the other hand will probably need a exorcism or a mercy- killing – the corruption permeates their party thru-and-thru.
