The race card

The lengths white right-wing conservatives will go to try and play [tag]African-American[/tag] voters for fools is literally breathtaking.

Last month, it was the Washington-based National Black Republican Association which started running radio ads in Maryland holding Democrats responsible for Jim Crow laws, the KKK, and releasing vicious dogs and fire hoses on blacks during the Civil Rights era. “Republicans freed us from slavery and put our right to vote in the Constitution,” the ads said.

This month, it’s a new set of ads — running in more than two dozen congressional districts nationwide — sponsored by a political action committee called “America’s Pac,” which is a project of the very wealthy (and very white) [tag]Patrick Rooney[/tag]. I honestly didn’t think the right could be this disgusting.

“[tag]Black[/tag] babies are terminated at triple the rate of white babies,” a female announcer in one of the ads says, as rain, thunder, and a crying infant are heard in the background. “The [tag]Democratic Party[/tag] supports these abortion laws that are decimating our people, but the individual’s right to life is protected in the Republican platform. Democrats say they want our vote. Why don’t they want our lives?”

Another ad features a dialogue between two men.

“If you make a little mistake with one of your ‘hos,’ you’ll want to dispose of that problem tout suite, no questions asked,” one of the men says.

“That’s too cold. I don’t snuff my own seed,” the other replies.

“Maybe you do have a reason to vote Republican,” the first man says.

Another ad suggests opposition to the [tag]war[/tag] in [tag]Iraq[/tag] is inherently racist.

Another spot attempts to link Democrats to a white supremacist who served as a Republican in the Louisiana Legislature, David Duke. The ad makes reference to Duke’s trip to Syria last year, where he spoke at an anti-war rally.

“I can understand why a Ku Klux Klan cracker like David Duke makes nice with the terrorists,” a male voice in the ad says. “What I want to know is why so many of the Democrat politicians I helped elect are on the same side of the Iraq war as David Duke.”

You simply can’t get any more pathetic than these ads. It’s a reminder of why Dems lose — there are simply no groups on the left who are willing to go this low. None.

And here’s the kicker: Gladys Muhammad, a teacher and Democratic activist in South Bend, Ind., said a student in her class reported that a relative was thinking of switching to the Republican Party because of the ads.

Rooney, who isn’t talking to the press, has reportedly committed $1 million (so far), and the ads are running in 10 battleground states, including Ohio, New Mexico, and Nevada. Rooney and his team figure if they can peel off a few percent of African-American voters, it could save the GOP in a lot of tight races.

They’ll do anything to win. Even this.

If Democrats want to show how much the GOP cares about African-Americans, just mention one word:

Katrina

  • Perverse smut. Ahistorical. Smear. Out of Touch. Vested Interests. A jumble of all the above. Pathetic powermongers – a good old fashion democracy has no room for such ilk. Damn the propaganda, full speed ahead to vote the rascals out in ’06 and ’08! -Kevo

  • Absolutely un…. f-ink… .believable.

Or, as I’ve seen elsewhere on progressive blogs….

    Fresca >>>>>>>>>>>> monitor.

  • I call BS! There is no friggin way they are running these ads!

little mistake with one of your ‘hos,’

    “a Ku Klux Klan cracker”

What will be bext two guys in black face saying the GOP wants to give away free chicken and watermelon and the honky Democrats can’t dance?

This is totally insane! Who funded these?

  • As that little girl reported, these sorts of ads do work with those who are uneducated – and you don’t have to be African American to have that problem to deal with. There are any number of ads the Republicans are running that absolutely depend on the listener/viewer having never gotten closer to political awareness than falling asleep in the back of the room during “How A Bill Becomes A Law” class in middle school. And Republicans are willing to exploit that ignorance/unawareness, since they really can only do what they do with supporters who are ignorant and unaware. Look at what’s being said by Dobson et al – after they were smeared by the Bushies – in reponse to the charges in David Kuo’s book.

That said, these ads really are unfreakingbelievable in how low they will go.

  • Patrick Rooney has made a career of influence peddling in Indiana and in Washington. He was formerly the head of a Golden Rule Insurance Company, a health insurer that was frequently charged with bad faith denial of claims.

A president of Anthem in the 1990s described the business model of Golden Rule fairly succinctly. “Take in premiums, refuse to pay claims.”

Rooney figured out in the early 1990s that medical savings accounts were an effective tool for peddling his high-deductible insurance policies. He lobbied the Indiana legislature (one of the most corrupt in America) and Congress to legalize medical savings accounts.

Rooney wanted to run for Indiana Governor in the 1990s but he dropped out of the race for undisclosed reasons.

A year ago, this tactic would have been seen as low for even Rooney’s malignant character. But with scared Republicans now revealing themselves to be the souless ghouls they really are, nothing is beneath them.

  • We never intended for the stupid people to have a say in the matter. Really, we didn’t.

  • These people are totally off their nut. If you can stomach it their website is quite a read.

Here is an example from an article titled “Democrats Vow to Kill Minimum Wage Increase”

    Opening paragraph:
“Democrats who claim they care about poor blacks vowed to block the law pushed by House Republicans that would increase the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour by June 1, 2009. Democrats use minimum wage as a wedge issue each election year. And now that Republicans are supporting a minimum wage increase, Democrats are blowing smoke in the eyes of blacks. ”

    3rd Paragraph:
“Democrats refuse to acknowledge that, in reality, raising the minimum wage makes middle class blacks poorer and keep poor blacks poor. It increases prices and drives small businesses out of business. The minimum wage is not intended to be a living wage for people raising a family. Instead, it is the entry-level pay for untrained and unskilled workers.”

So is raising the minimum wage a good thing that Dems are blocking or a bad thing that kills the economy?

Who would write such an article? Francis Rice.

“Back in February of this year, we caught Frances Rice, one of the state’s leading Republican organizers, plagiarizing Washington Post columnist Colbert King; when cornered, she accused Venice Florida! dot com of racism
    — John Patten, 05/22/05”

    http://www.veniceflorida.com/features/falsegroundswell.htm

Seems like James Dobson meets Cynthia McKinney.

  • I like the irony of using David Duke- especially because he was a Republif*&k candidate…

  • About the only tactic left for the right in their bag of tricks are right wing death squads. They’ve unleashed just about everything short of that. Outright violence and terror is their last hope.

  • I honestly didn’t think the right could be this disgusting.

Nothing they do anymore suprises me. I applaud you for thinking they still any sense of decency left, but I think it’s only wishful thinking at this point.

  • “If you make a little mistake with one of your ‘hos,’ you’ll want to dispose of that problem tout suite, no questions asked,” one of the men says.

This script reads like it was written by a white suburbanite who listens to way too much gangsta rap. Tout suite? Isn’t that French slang for “pretty damn quick”?

The “one of your ‘hos” line is just fucking insulting. Is the Republican view of the average black voter that stereotypical — guys just hanging out of the corner and knocking up a string a “hos”?

Really, this shit works? I’m surprised it isn’t seen as the condescending racist bullshit it is.

  • I doubt these ads are terribly effective. Black people aren’t stupid, and they know their history. Probably a good deal better than the crackers who are running these ridiculous ads.

  • Truly disgusting. While it is not quite so disgusting, have you noticed that certain wingnuts (e.g., Byron White) are playing the Fancy Ford canard again. I guess he can’t stand it that Congressman Ford got to go to that SuperBowl Party in Jacksonville – so now York is trying to claim Ford was hanging with WHITE WOMEN in their underwear!

  • I don’t usually read CB for the humor, but man, those ads are hilarious.

More vegetarians are Democrats. Hitler was a vegetarian. What I want to know is, …

  • “Republicans freed us from slavery and put our right to vote in the Constitution,”

And yet it took a Democrat to ensure the right to vote.

I still can’t figure out why Democrats can’t sue — stuff like this falls squarely under libel, slander and/or defamation of character. Granted, being overly litigious isn’t a good thing, but shouldn’t there come a time when enough is enough?

  • Where are the Katrina ads?

How about a background track of the people chanting “Help!” at the convention center with footage of N.O. residents stranded and dying. Across the screen: “The Republicans in Washington weren’t there for the people when the people needed them most. Now they want your vote?”

That’s not low. It’s true. Why we aren’t reminding voters of this over and over is beyond me.

  • It’s consistent with Fox News and AP both reporting Mark Foley as a Democrat in the scandal coverage.

Some people just won’t know — and they’re the target audience.

The votes of those who do know won’t be affected by the error.

The result is still a net Republican gain (or Democratic loss).

Every little bit helps, when so many elections will be so close.

  • The more divisive, the more hateful, the more destructive; the better Bushcheneyrove like it. Doesn’t seem too bad for the party of torture, but pretty awful for actual human beings.

  • Now we know what these guys do for a living: http://www.blackpeopleloveus.com/

It would be supremely ironic if all of the dirty tricks the Rethugs have put in place that target Democrat sections of society (which the Rethugs assume includes all African-Americans) meant that their target audience (excessively stupid African-Americans I guess) couldn’t vote.

However, I must point out that most women, regardless of the box they check on the Census form, generally don’t appreciate being refered to as “ho’s,” so perhaps that could be a basis for a Democrat’s ad: “The Republican Party regards African-American women as ho’s…” Other than that, I third or fourth the Katrina ads. To drive the point home Bush/GOP reaction to that disaster could be juxtaposed with Bush/GOP reaction to Terry Schiavo (sp?)

  • I know Bush was elected to sanitize the White House but who is going to restore honor and dignity to the Republican Party?

Dunno, maybe it’s this guy, Rooney.

  • while it is not surprising to me that the republicans would do anything they could to hold on to power, the idiocy of my fellow americans ceases to amaze me. one black gentleman whom i consider a friend thinks that abortion is a huge issue, and wants to support candidates who oppose abortion. my sole question to him is, “if you fear that the democrats take your vote for granted, just name one thing the republicans have done now or under reagan from which you benefitted.”

was it good to cut college funding?
how about rallying against affirmative action?
is there some special economic incentive to vote republican? last year was kind of a crappy year for both of us.

however instead of voting with his head, he votes with his heart, for LYING scumbags who don’t care whom they hurt or torture or kill in order to maintain the status quo.

  • Wow. Whoever designed these ads is counting on blacks totally lacking critical faculties and historical sense.

If 1% do, and it helps an election, is it worth offending the others?

  • These ads are indeed tasteless and dumb, but they touch on a potentially deadly truth: on moral values like abortion and gay marriage, African-Americans have more in common with Republicans than Democrats. School vouchers also appeal to black voters. I hope the Democrats can keep hammering on the economic justice issues, but the Republicans have a potential winner on moral issues.

  • Are they trying to appeal to black voters?
“Black babies are terminated at triple the rate of white babies”

Uhm … OK … are they saying that Democrats held down those pregnant black women and forced them to have abortions against their will?

Wouldn’t an ad like this make those women—and the men who presumably supported their decision to have an abortion—vote for the Democrats who keep abortion legal?

I don’t even understand what they are trying to accomplish, it makes no sense.

  • How about a background track of the people chanting “Help!” at the convention center with footage of N.O. residents stranded and dying. Across the screen: “The Republicans in Washington weren’t there for the people when the people needed them most. Now they want your vote?”
That’s not low. It’s true. Why we aren’t reminding voters of this over and over is beyond me.

That would make a great ad. Very powerful. And the Dems would never in a million years run it, because Republicans would react with faux how-dare-they outrage.

And that scares establishmend Democrats. It absolutely terrifies them that Republicans might say mean things about them in public.

  • “The Democrats publicly support reading in our schools.

Do you know how many children died last year as a direct result of reading?

    Vote Republican”

When are you guys gonna get a black president?

  • Of course the fact that such statements are true is besides the point, I guess. There is nothing factually incorrect about any of them, if one actually dares to do a bit of research. You may not like the insinuations, but the actual presentations are factually correct.

  • Ha ha ha . David Duke is/was a Republican. Ha ha ha.

In the 60s, all the Dixiecrats migrated to the Republican Party. I wonder why they felt safe there?

  • Everything in the ads was true, every single word. You liberal scum line up with al Qaeda, maybe because you think they’ll legalize gay marriage??? Ha ha ha.

Face it, scum. Your time is up. There may be elections in a few days…or not. No where in the Const. does it say we have to have elections if one side wants to destroy the country in time of war with troops in harms’ way. No where.

There is no need to have an election when you guys are nothing but filthy liars who wanrt to sell us out to your butt-buddies in Greenpeace, al Qaeda and similar liberal minded outfits, ha ha. Get stuffed, losers. God Bless Bush!

  • Notice: Please do not feed the trolls

Seriously though, are these ads really being run, or is this another false buy like the Bin Ladin ads? They shell out the money to produce the ads, everyone gets their panties in a twist, it generates a lot of outrage and free publicity, and in the end they run the ad once, on Fox news and no one notices.

Beware feeding the Republican machine on our own hype and outrage.
