The ‘Seas of David’ terrorist plot ‘more hype than evidence’

There have been a series of alleged terrorist plots that the White House has claimed to have disrupted. Sometimes Bush and his team tout these thwarted plots to defend torture, and sometimes it’s to defend illegally tapping Americans’ phones, but the bottom line is always the same — there are dangerous bad guys out there, and the president is stopping them.

As it turns out, most, if not all, of the examples of thwarted plots touted by the Bush gang fall apart under scrutiny, but my all-time favorite has to be the “Seas of David” cult (aka, the “Miami Seven” or the “Liberty City Seven”).

When these would-be terrorists were captured, the administration characterized it as an enormous victory. Shortly after the suspects were taken into custody, Dick Cheney personally bragged that the Miami group was “a very real threat.” Then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was so excited he held a press conference to highlight this stunning counter-terrorism success story.

The AG said the group represented a “new brand of terrorism” created by “the convergence of globalization and technology.” The Justice Department said the terrorists in Miami intended to even blow up the Sears Tower in Chicago.

Except the story was wildly exaggerated — and juries refuse to give prosecutors a conviction.

Federal prosecutors again failed to win convictions for six Florida men on terror-related charges, as a deadlocked jury led a judge to declare a mistrial in the case Wednesday.

The men, part of a group dubbed the “Liberty City Seven,” were charged with planning an attack on Chicago’s Sears Tower following a 2006 FBI raid on a warehouse that served as their headquarters and “temple” in Liberty City, one of Miami’s poorest neighborhoods.

An earlier jury acquitted one man and deadlocked over counts against the other six in December.

Critics accused the Bush administration of “see[ing] terrorism under every rock,” and of essentially fabricating a major terror case against seven men using a paid informant.

Critics’ accusations appear to have merit.

These alleged terrorists had no weapons, no bombs, no expertise, and no money. They didn’t behave or operate as terrorists. They apparently swore an oath of allegiance to Osama bin Laden, but because an undercover FBI infiltrator suggested the idea. For that matter, despite some reports to the contrary, these guys weren’t Muslims, but instead practiced their own hybrid religion that combined Islam and Christianity.

Their “plots” against the United States were “embryonic at best.” The New York Daily News described the group, which was more a cult than a terrorist network, as the “7 Boobs.” They’d have trouble attacking a convenience store, better yet the Sears Tower.

They were best known in their community for following a leader who would wander around inner-city Miami in a bathrobe.

Critics have said the administration’s efforts to prosecute the men on terror charges undermines its credibility.

Miami law professor and civil rights lawyer Bruce Winick said the defeat was a harsh blow to the Bush administration. “It makes them look bad,” said Winick, who has criticized the Liberty City Seven case in the past. “They don’t have any credibility… you can’t see terrorism under every rock,” he said.

The government’s case was “more hype than evidence,” Neal Sonnett, past president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, told ABC News recently. It was viable to argue, as the men’s lawyers did, that the government informant “created the crime.”

Something to remember the next time the White House describes something as “a very real threat.”

me? i’m personally afraid of guys who walk around in bathrobes. i don’t own one myself and usually move to the other side of the street when i see one coming.

  • That mea culpa from Faux News should be coming any time now…wait for it…oh, commercial break, but for sure, right after they get back…

  • That’s the problem with twarted plots, unless you get them crossing the border in a car packed with explosives you really don’t have a very strong case.

But the Bushites will claim whatever they can to destroy the very Freedoms they claim terrorists hate.

  • This Administration has created what it has thought to be a pretty good narrative to keep itself in power, and to ensure the passing of that power to loyal Republicans into the future. They heightened the fear factor, sullied the DoJ with political operatives, and manipulated the media circus into running the most flimsy “plots against the United States” stories – all to keep law abiding Americans dependent upon them to be our benefactors from cradle to grave.

Well, the jig is up! We now know the hooey this Administration has been forcing upon us, and as the competing narratives begin to emerge, (you know, the historian narratives based on historical reality), we can look forward to the next phase of engagement – reconciliation, and war crimes against the itty-bitty torture committee members. -Kevo

  • It is sad to see how Americans have allowed these politicians to act so imperially. Bush/Cheney/Gonzalez should personally provide $1 million per person out of their own purses in retribution for what they have put these men through. It is despicable that men who claim they are CHRISTIANS should get such joy at the destruction of fellow human beings to prove the Bush/Cheney power grab.

  • Were those the terrorists who didn’t own a decent pair of boots and didn’t have any passports? I can’t believe they are still in jail. it is Bush and Co. who should be in jail.

  • I would add to Gracious , number 7 comments, that the entire Corporate / Repiglica Media should as well for aiding and abetting this purposeful, criminal, fraud …

  • Ah, life in (Jeb Bush’s) Florida:
Terri Schaivo, need I say more?
The Liberty City Seven, as referenced here, and Sami Al-Arian.

Go ahead & do an internet search on Mr. Al-Arian, and thank your lucky stars that you are not on the wrong side of the DOJ and AIPAC.

  • SHIP WITH ARMS FOR ZIMBABWE CLEARED BY SOTUHT AFRICA CUSTOMS

A Chinese ship carrying a consignment of weapons destined for Zimbabwe was cleared through customs at the South African port of Durban on Wednesday, police and transport officials said.

“There are arms on the vessel and the ship is on the outer anchorage of the port and it’s been docked here since April 14,” Nicholas Gunther of the police explosives unit in Durban told South Africa’s SAPA news agency.

A transport spokesman later confirmed that the “An Yue Jiang”, which was initially denied entry for having incorrect paperwork, had been cleared through customs.

International sanctions imposed by Western countries against Zimbabwe include a ban on weapons sales to the country.

In February a report adopted by the foreign affairs commission of the European Parliament urged the European Union to put pressure on China to stop stop delivering weapons to African countries, naming Zimbabwe in particular.

Zimbabwe is currently gripped by tensions resulting from the failure by the electoral commission to release the results of the March 29 presidential election.

  • It’s amazing how many people believe Bush has kept us safe by thwarting all these terrorist threats, which are very few in number, and apparently all bogus. This is all they can come up with? It’s absolutely pathetic.

Now what we need is someone to investigate al Qaeda, so that we can find out what kind of outfit is actually behind this evil Wizard of Oz that is supposedly threatening western civilization. I’m betting we’d find out the war on terror is an utter fraud. Any takers?

Of course, we’ll never know, because the Republicans need this threat to maintain power, and the Democrats haven’t the guts to expose it.

  • Was this the group that was going to blow up the “Sears Tower”, but were referring to a Sears store in Miami, not the “Tower” in Chicago? I swear I heard that at the time.

  • They are lucky they got a jury, and actual charges, instead of being hustled off to a black site or Gitmo.

In the brave new world of Bush, many aren’t so lucky.

  • Sources tell me that there was deliberate jury tampering in both trials: leftist activist moles deliberately infiltrated both juries, deliberately misrepresenting their true views during voir dire pretrial proceedings. This is a serious crime and the FBI is looking into this. I would suggest that the FBI should do thorough background checks on all potential jurors BEFORE the actual trial of any terrorist suspects.

Dale – I agree, except that (given the 2 sets) the wrong set of assholes are in jail and on trial.

True. I’d like to see some “principals” go to jail.

  • nabalzbbfr – for a second there I actually took your comment seriously. Good joke!
