The White House sees a vast Democratic conspiracy

Following up on the last item for a moment, top White House aide Dan Bartlett was asked by the Washington Post why the president continues to stand up Alberto Gonzales, even in light of bipartisan disgust for his tenure. The response was unusually inane, even by the standards of the Bush gang.

“This has been a strategy by the Democrats in the Congress, particularly the United States Senate, Judiciary, to, through, a strategy of hearings and different leakings and drippings documents out, trying to build a case against the Attorney General — with mostly innuendo and allegations that have not been proven true….

“[T]he suggestion that he has done something fundamentally wrong, or something that would require him to be removed from office, is not accurate either. And I think the way [Democrats are] trying to advance this, as if they were in a parliamentary system of government, calling for a no-confidence vote, is the type of, as the president said, political theater, which actually loses confidence in Washington that the American people have. So, the president’s not going to play that game….

“[Democrats] have demonstrated, time and time again, to be opposed to the type of law enforcement and anti-terrorism policies this president has pursued. They’re trying to take that out of the Attorney General.”

I wish I could say I had made this up, but I’m afraid I’m not nearly creative enough to even imagine such a spectacularly dumb assessment.

Let’s unfold Bartlett’s comments a bit:

1. Democrats are orchestrating a conspiracy to get Gonzales.

2. Gonzales is as pure as the driven snow. All of the ironclad evidence against him is wrong.

3. Americans are losing faith in Washington, not because of Gonzales’ dishonesty and malfeasance, but because Democrats are pointing to Gonzales’ dishonesty and malfeasance.

4. The White House that orchestrated the “Mission Accomplished” speech feels justified in accusing others of “political theater.”

5. The real reason Dems are challenging Gonzales is because they’re weak on terror.

Congratulations to Dan Bartlett for officially becoming a parody of himself.

through, a strategy of hearings and different leakings and drippings documents out, trying to build a case against the Attorney General — with mostly innuendo and allegations that have not been proven true….

I suppose it is beyond our dear WH aide Dan Bartlett to recognize that the ‘allegations that have not been proven true’ bit is wholly due to the refusal of his boss and those around him to provide the materials, documents, and witnesses needed by the Committees to allow a comprehensive investigation.

But that is how these un-Americans have always operated.

  • I guess all the Republicans who think Gonzales looks like a crook were brainwashed?

““[Democrats] have demonstrated, time and time again, to be opposed to the type of law enforcement and anti-terrorism policies this president has pursued.”

Uh yeah, but not the way you think, hackwad. Democrats actually think law enforcement and anti-terrorism policies should be enacted for the good of the nation, not their political party.

  • ‘a strategy of hearings and different leakings and drippings documents out’

Combine with flour in a shallow pan, whisk until the flour turns a rich nutty brown, and you’ve got a lovely roux…

  • I’m surprised they haven’t done the “witch-hunt” thing more. After Clinton, people are apt to believe it.

  • You know, republicans have really fucked this country up in a number of ways, but perhaps the worst thing they have done is to bring partisanship to poisonous levels. Everything is a game to them. With us or against us. No compromise. They have villified democrats for years and years to the point where if you aren’t a republican, you are the enemy. Especially if you are a liberal democrat. What ever happened to united we stand, divided we fall? We are all American, right?
These republican fascists are a scourge and a boil on the ass of our country.
We will be much better of as a country when these little cry baby bullies are removed from government completely.

  • Pretty much what we’ve come to expect from the enablers of the Addict Guy. “Shhh! Don’t talk about it!” Those who persist in talking about “it” are of course shunned. I sometimes consider going back to school to get my Ph.D in psych just so I could write a thesis on addiction and leadership (or lack thereof).

  • Add milk and seasonings, iucaffiend, and you’ve got the gravy to go with the roast turkey in the oval office. Might I suggest a “Bartlett” pear stuffing?

  • Tell you one thing: when you’re in despair over the spinelessness of the Democrats, there’s little more bracing than reading about the idiocy, mendacity and straight-up viciousness of the Republicans. It’s worth supporting the Dems even if they’re just deadweight that blocks the way for these bastards to do more damage.

  • “…trying to build a case against the Attorney General”? Sorry, but that is most definitely The House That Alberto Built, all by himself.

And since when does the president not “do political theatre”? the examples are too numerous to detail, but the speech with the Statue of Liberty in the background, the barge with a gagillion floodlights, the men in the front row who would appear in the angle shot with the president being asked to remove their ties and rollup their sleeves so they’d look more “blue collar” will do for starters. Anyone remember that? The president, or his handlers, is a political theatre junkie!

  • “[Democrats] have demonstrated, time and time again, to be opposed to the type of law enforcement and anti-terrorism policies this president has pursued. They’re trying to take that out of the Attorney General.”

It’s true. My problem with AG AG is that I was wrong about the tremendous gains and sweeping changes our policies are making in Iraq. I am taking my frustrations out on him.

    Wait. What?

  • The Commander Guy is standing on a foundation made of lying and deceit. A foundation built on lies and deception crumbles under the weight of the truth. He can try and outrun the truth, but eventually it will catch up with him. We all reap what we sow.

  • Want to see a magic trick? A real good one, I promise.. Watch closely as I snap my fingers and with the use of my excellent magic skills, Dan Bartlett is suddenly transformed into Joe freakin’ McCarthy and Democrat is substituted for Communist! WOW!!! Pretty neat trick, eh?

Talk about a witch hunt, Bartlett is just another boot licker in the long line of McCarthy drones.

  • “different leakings and drippings documents out”

Projection, projection, projection (or perhaps he’s just following the old Soviet strategy of charging their enemies with whatever they happened to be guilty of at the time). All the recent instances of strategic leaking and dribbling selected documents out a few a time had Republicans controlling the spigot, mostly Rove, Bush, and Cheney.

  • We are stuck in a curious place. I scream about the fact that the Republicans ignore polls and do what they want to do, the people be damned. And I scream when the Democrats look at the polls and bend themselves into pretzels trying to do what they think the polls want them to do, and in the process do nothing but declaim loudly and ineffectually. Damn.

  • No doubt, anything and anybody associated with this plugged up toilet of an administration, although they technically may speak whole sentences without the slight stammering and unsure patois of flop-sweated thespian of the Will Shatner/GW school of scenery chewing, are going to come off as a clueless morons, trying to convince no one (except maybe themselves) that even though their pants are wet, they didn’t commit the peeing. From what I understand, they optimistically scheduled projects for a goodly portion of the rest of the year onward, with the idea that the media would take up their assigned role as bend-over buddies, spreading the disguised manure of the Bush white house as if they were giving away free brown M&M’s and Baby Ruths. That’s good; I’ve always thought that with Bush’s slacker mentality towards fully engaged reality constructs and his barely repressed contempt for all things proper and ordained by the creator (or nothing, if you’re an atheist) with certain unalienable rights, it’s just a matter of time before he and his various department heads, including Bob and Neal, are roped in as a minions of Satan (or nothing) as their immortal souls (firing synapses caused by bio-chemical reactions) further descend into the maw of the dark side (or nothing). Though the hound from hell (or nowhere) licks gleefully at his shriveled nads, what is for him, the primary focus of his pitiful and pointless existence, he will be made to kneel before Sister Ann Daniel and confess his violation of the 9th commandment: Thou shall not covet thy neighbor’s wife’s Alpo enhanced gash.

  • This administration has totally and completely disregard for the laws and the Constitution of the United States. Then they complain about Democrats for trying to do the oversight as required by the Constitution. This administration has built a house of cards and now it has started to collapse. They blamed the Democrats for all their troubles. In the Bible Jesus says a house built on sand cannot stand. So when the rains and winds comes it will collapse.

  • Actually, although I’m no Biblical scholar, I believe that’s “a house divided against itself”. I don’t think sand or cards was mentioned in that particular passage. Nonetheless, the intent of your statement is correct, and Bush is headed for collapse. It just frustrates me how bloody long it is taking, and how he continues to “govern” as if he were under no restrictions whatsoever. It doesn’t help that the Democrats will apparently do no more than scold him. The next president will have two terms worth of mess to clean up (assuming the electorate doesn’t get impatient by the end of the first one, and allow itself to be seduced away with Republican promises of milk, honey and foreign plunder for all), and it staggers my imagination that anyone would want the job.
