Thursday’s Mini-Report

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* AP: “Serb rioters broke into the U.S. Embassy and set fire to an office Thursday, and police clashed with protesters outside other embassy buildings after a large demonstration against Kosovo’s declaration of independence. Masked attackers broke into the U.S. compound, which has been closed this week, just after 7 p.m. and tried to throw furniture from an office. They set fire to the office and flames shot up the side of the building. It took police about 45 minutes to appear at the scene, and firefighters arrived about the same time and put out the blaze. Police secured the U.S. Embassy and surrounding area, blocking off all access.”

* WaPo: “Military officials have a “high degree of confidence” that they were able to hit and destroy the tank of potentially dangerous fuel aboard a wayward spy satellite orbiting Earth last night, but they said they must still monitor the debris to be certain it does not pose further risk of reentering the atmosphere in coming days.”

* Fortunately, no one was hurt: “Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Joseph Biden (D-Del.) and Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) were uninjured in an emergency landing that became necessary during a helicopter flight Thursday afternoon in Afghanistan. Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander said the senators were flying in a snowstorm when the landing became necessary.”

* Bill O’Reilly on Michelle Obama: “I don’t want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there’s evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels. If that’s how she really feels — that America is a bad country or a flawed nation, whatever — then that’s legit.” I wonder if he can even begin to understand why “lynching party” was the wrong choice of words.

* Trent Lott may be gone from the Senate, but his record is still drawing scrutiny from some interesting people: “[Federal investigators] are investigating whether former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott knowingly played a role in the alleged conspiracy involving a Mississippi judge, Bobby Delaughter.”

* Air America Radio is changing hands: “Air America, one of the country’s more powerful radio networks and a major progressive megaphone, is switching ownership. Charlie Kireker, a former political official and creator of Pendulum Media will succeed Stephen L. Green, the New York real estate CEO who helped lift the company out of bankruptcy, as chair of the board. The move will be finalized in mid March. Mark Green, Stephen’s brother and Democratic activist, will remain as Air America’s president.”

* Remember this John McCain quote from November? TP does: “Everybody says that they’re against the special interests. I’m the only one the special interests don’t give any money to.” That was … what’s the phrase … demonstrably false.

* Will McCain’s name be on the ballot for Indiana’s Republican presidential primary? As it turns out, that’s a funny story.

* It’s heartbreaking that this garbage still goes on: “A police investigation is under way at an elite prep school here after many black students received anonymous letters that the head of the school described as ‘threatening hate mail.’ A spokeswoman for the school, St. Paul’s, said the letters had arrived in the students’ mailboxes on Tuesday. The spokeswoman, Jana Brown, would not disclose the contents of the letters or how many students received them, but said, ‘Students of color do appear to be the target.’ According to several people associated with St. Paul’s, each student received a copy of his own photo from the school’s internal face book with the words ‘bang bang get out of here’ written below.”

* I may have to break my “no TV news” rule for this one: “On Sunday, CBS’s 60 Minutes will air its long-awaited report on Alabama’s incarcerated former governor Don Siegelman, reportedly one of its ‘best pieces of domestic exposé journalism.’ Justice Department prosecutors opposed the Siegelman investigation, in which Bush administration political operatives — including Karl Rove — allegedly interfered.”

Anything to add? Consider this an end-of-the-day open thread.

All Spin Zone says McCain’s top 3 advisors resigned from his campaign today!!http://allspinzone.com/wp/

  • Thank goodness O’Reilly only said “lynching party” rather than “pimped” in his comments about Michelle Obama ’cause then he’d be in some real trouble for his remarks.

  • That was, what’s the word, demonstrably false.

I prefer baldfaced lie, but demonstrably false has a nice ring.

Bill O’Reilly on Michelle Obama: “I don’t want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama…

Didn’t a sports reporter get canned for saying something like this about Tiger Woods? Let’s hope O’Wrongly suffers the same fate. What an idiot.

  • My Bad. the story they had up, was from last year. Sheesh. I clicked through the link and read the dateline. Sheesh, I am embarrassed.

  • Dee Loralei: Carn sarned it all! Don’t put a smile on my face, just to knock it back off again.

    🙂

  • I wonder if he can even begin to understand why “lynching party” was the wrong choice of words.

You think that was a gaffe?

    Wanna buy a bridge?

  • Someone needs to remind Bilafel O that this country does indeed have flaws and that the first step to fixing flaws is to admit that they exist .
The language he used was not an off the cuff remark . It wasn’t aimed at us my enlightened friends . It’s to instigate hate . It will be defended by people who cannot or will not admit to their own flaws in character . The people of this world deserve better , Don’t let the Light of Liberty will be extiguished with hate .

  • AP: “The Bush administration is bracing for a diplomatic backlash after conceding it used British territory to transport suspected terrorists on secret rendition flights despite repeated earlier assurances the U.S. had not. U.S. officials have sought to quell the fallout by apologizing to Britain for what they said was an ‘administrative error.'”

  • Other than Faux News, where could anyone get away with using the term “lynching party” for any reason in commentary even if it were aimed at an Irish relative? O’Reilly: O’bama? There is no bottom with that crowd, but I suspect they will take us lower and lower as the year progresses.

  • I watched the debate and thought Hil did so so…but she did a killer closing. A little class goes a long way. And she closed with class. Good for her. It’s nice to see.

  • “Everybody says that they’re against the special interests. I’m the only one the special interests don’t give any money to.” That was, what’s the word, demonstrably false.

Demonstrably false, baldface lie, utter BS, “Straight Talk” – all pretty much the same thing.

If you keep calling your lies “Straight Talk” people will believe that you’re telling them the truth eventually.

I believe another president referred to it as “catapulting the propaganda.”

  • John Barleycorn: Someone needs to remind Bilafel O that this country does indeed have flaws and that the first step to fixing flaws is to admit that they exist .

Saying stuff like that is enough to get someone lynched.

  • Did Clinton’s closing remark strike anyone else as a subtle dig inspired by the Cheney fear-factor handbook?

Whatever happens, we’re going to be fine. You know, we have strong support from our families and our friends. I just hope that we’ll be able to say the same thing about the American people, and that’s what this election should be about.

Was she not saying, ‘I’ll be fine if I’m not elected, but I’m not sure about you?’

  • Beep52, I didn’t catch that. I was listening to it online and I heard her closing give kudos to Obama.

Honestly, you’re probably right, but that sailed right past me. I don’t even think I heard it.

  • Beep52 (redux). I listened to the end of the speech again (it’s on http://www.DailyKos.com) and I definitely did not take it that way. While that *might* have been what she meant, if it was, it was pretty heavily veiled. I took it more as we, as a country, are in quite the pickle and we as a people, and we as a nation, need help.

  • MsJoanne: It was veiled, indeed. I was just wondering if anyone else caught it because she’s made similar statements before. Not a big deal either way.

  • I don’t watch TV, not even debates; I process info better when it’s visual (text) than when it’s aural, especially in English. But I thought I’d toss in this tidbit from TPM, seeing as MsJoanne and beep52 brought up the subject (I was perfectly willing to wait for CB’s report tomorrow):

Must be my warped sense of humour but I found it hilarious. ‘specially since Hillary had, apparently, made a point of the plagiarism issue…

  • Libra, interesting what Marshall had to say. I think he’s right (and I HATED when Hil made that plagiarism dig during the debate) and more so when it comes to a spouse. When you spend day in and day out with someone, there are times when your words become one.

  • Did Clinton’s closing remark strike anyone else as a subtle dig inspired by the Cheney fear-factor handbook?beep52@16

Not at all. She conceded the election. Change you can Xerox. Vast right wing conspiracy. Honor to be here with Barck Obama. V for Vendetta. All that shit, Yo. All that shit. If she was trying to shoot us in the face, as it were, she was using a squirt gun.

But look what’s happening on the Republican side- I mean it’s really early to have already trotted out Bob Bennett’s bloated corpulence. Rediculous. And now there is already speculation that Romney may have planted the NYT Times piece- at least I think I read that somewhere- maybe it was in comment 22. John McCain (or Juan McAmnesty as the righties call him) is essentially Crazy McBrundlefly-and-telepod at this point, a freakish twisted political insect-frankenstein, slathering a trail of bloody entrails behind him as he uses his one damaged robotic arm to drag himself accross the finish line to the nomination.

I don’t want to go on a rant here, but…

Meanwhile the Kurds have Turkish troops surrounded in Kurdistan, our embassy in Blegrade is on fire, we’re shooting down poison satellites to scare the Russians…Afganistan is a problem…the economy is teetering on the bring of depression…

Call me delusional if you will Mrs. Clinton, but it’s time to make this kid prez. I’d like you to bow out March 5 and hop on board the change express, sister. Super Obama Girl, Bill Simmon, Obama Baby, Ted Kennedy, Robert DeNiro and Oprah Winfery agree- it’s time for a change. The audicty of hope has met the fiece urgency of now. We are the one’s we’ve been waiting for. Keep hope alive. We want change. Yes we can!

(Note- I stole most of this comment from Deval Patrick and Dennis Miller.)

  • 23. Uhm maybe you had to be there…I don’t get it. But since Dennis Miller lost his once brighton mind somewhere along the line that doesn’t surprise me.
