I saw (via Billmon) that Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) was asked for his thoughts on the current difficulties in Iraq. His answer was disturbing, even for him.
At first, Lott expressed concern for troop deployment. “We need to have a different mix of troops, is the key,” he told The Hill. “We may need to move some troops around.”
So far, so good. However, Lott then shifted gears.
“Honestly, it’s a little tougher than I thought it was going to be,” Lott said. In a sign of frustration, he offered an unorthodox military solution: “If we have to, we just mow the whole place down, see what happens. You’re dealing with insane suicide bombers who are killing our people, and we need to be very aggressive in taking them out.”
Let’s see, “mowing” an entire country down… yeah, I’d say that qualifies as being “very aggressive.”
Never mind all that talk about liberating Iraq, our compassion for the plight of the Iraqi people, and our desire to see the nation rebuilt into a burgeoning modern democracy. Lott sees a country where we’re having difficulties, so he suggests we “mow the whole place down.”
Amazing, even for Lott.
