Tuesday’s Mini-Report

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* It amuses me to no end that Tom DeLay has been reduced to selling off campaign furniture and office supplies to raise funds for his legal defense.

* You probably didn’t know this, but gay people not only threaten the future of civilization, they also “threaten your very survival.” As long as right-wingers don’t resort to fear mongering, we’ll be fine.

* Learning not to mix congressional staff and campaign staff is one of the first lessons of Congressional Ethics 101. Too bad Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.) wasn’t paying attention. (My favorite part of the story: Murphy fired the staffer who worked for both, not to rectify the situation, but because she spoke to a reporter.)

* After the preemptive conservative whining about how mean congressional Democrats might be to the Bush White House, it’s probably worth taking a moment to remember what the political world was like in 1994.

* A couple of weeks ago, the White House said the United States is taking the “lead” in combating climate change. And if by “lead,” the Bush gang meant coming in 53rd in climate change performance of the 56 top carbon dioxide-emitting nations, the White House was absolutely right.

* Chuck Todd believes Bush’s personal campaign stops “may have been the deciding factor that killed the GOP’s momentum in some key Senate races over the last week.” (I can almost hear Nelson Muntz saying, “Ha, ha.”)

* Behold, the miraculous circular logic surrounding the national media, DC culture, and people considered credible by the powers that be.

* If Dems steered clear of the insurance industry altogether, it’d be just fine with me.

* Senate Dems officially picked their leadership team today.

* They also came up with preliminary committee assignments.

* I think redeployment is far more popular among congressional Dems than the WaPo realizes.

* If you missed it over the weekend, Howard Dean was pretty darn good on Fox News Sunday. (thanks to SKNM for the heads-up)

* I’m not sure why, but right-wing domestic terrorists seem to have settled on white powder as the weapon of choice.

* Olbermann doesn’t do it nearly as much as he used to, but when he’s calling out Bill O’Reilly, it’s not only entertaining, it must be infuriating to the Fox News gang.

* And, finally, rumor has it that the White House is considering another recess appointment for John Bolton to the U.N. Because two consecutive recess appointments aren’t exactly legal, Bolton couldn’t get paid for his work. Several right-wing blogs are, however, currently organizing a drive to pay Bolton’s salary. Seriously.

If none of these particular items are of interest, consider this an end-of-the-day open thread.

It appears some R’s are willing to dump Bolton to give one of the good guys a chance. There is some chance that recent upset victim and moderate Republican Jim Leach of Iowa will be pushed for the UN ambassador position.

  • Michael Savage + Dan Savage + baseball bat = one less wingnut. I’d pay to watch that fight and if Dan’s not available, I’ll do it. This shit makes me v-e-r-y nervous because for some “people” the fact that Mike says gays are a threat will justify all sorts of fuckery with guns, machetes and explosives and I don’t think Mike and his ilk will be rounded up as Enemy Combatants when that happens.

Hmmm. Or maybe we can pay DeLay (the vote) to take him out. He needs the cash and he’s ruthless…

  • Hey, could leftwing bloggers get together to make a counter-bid against Bolton? I’m no moneybags, but I might be willing to chip in a few bucks to keep that jerk out of the UN.

  • I don’t believe that Bolton would have the same lofty title if he’s appointed again. Anyone know about that?

One right-wing blogger wants to nominate Rumsfield. He’s another reason why we can’t all just get along, so he’s a natural for a Republican ambassador.

PS If anyone does NOT want to be in my blogroll please let me know. Thanks.

  • * I’m not sure why, but right-wing domestic terrorists seem to have settled on white powder as the weapon of choice.

They’re so dumb they misunderstood: White Power. Dyslexics Untie!

I predict Martinez will make the same mistake Tim Murphy did and be out on his butt by summer.

Sounds like we need some gay-basher bashing.

We need some clips of O’Reilly introducing some of those weird segments he used to have on his old Inside Edition show. PT Barnum was right.

I don’t know if there is any connection to the Castagana case, but Air America was targeted in a fake anthrax scare yesterday.

  • Oh, to find Michael Savage face down in a dark alley, bleeding out from a large-caliber exit wound… and then to pee all over him.

Yeah, yeah, it puts me on his level to say that, but if there is one of those scum who really deserves it, it’s him, because he just got into this crap for the money – there are all sorts of reports that he doesn’t really believe it, just does it because it pays. Which – when you think of what he’s saying – makes him far worse.

  • Bolton cannot be appointed Ambassador. But he could be appointed Assistant Ambassador, which doesn’t require Senate confirmation and for which he could be paid, and then be Acting Ambassador with the top position left unfilled.

  • Chuck Todd believes Bush’s personal campaign stops “may have been the deciding factor that killed the GOP’s momentum in some key Senate races over the last week.”

Yeah, I remember you making an argument like this here a while ago CB and it sounded pretty persuasive to me then. I forgot to mention it on this post in my capsule explanation of what happened in the elections (I’ll have to do a more comprehensive bit of an account of it a little later) but I’m not watching these races closely enough to really see what kind of effect one particular factor like that has on them.
It seems like it was maybe a personal idea of Bush’s and a bad idea, but not one anyone wanted to give him a straight opinion on.

  • It looks like Bush the elder aka “Opium Pappy”, has finally identified the thorn in his son’s side. I’m not sure whether GW was borned from his mom’s or his dad’s pregnancy, but it seems they don’t much care as long as it walks and talks… so… if you think Ross Perot had problems…

    Look Out Bagger!!

    They’re on to you!

They have figured out how the political climate got ugly. They now know why liars, cowards, traitors, softies, whiners, commies, etc., have made things so difficult for G(od made me doit) W(md) Bush and somewhat dimmed the Republican bulb upon the Hill.

At this rate, they may need slightly larger dentention camps though. And wouldn’t that be a kick in the ass if the last bastions of freedom were INSIDE the cages?

    Well…

I just wanted to give you a heads up. We may be meeting someday.

Howdy to Ms. Bagger… (she was right, man. chicks are always right. the blog works. so check the goddam plug FIRST. it’s not the capacitor convery in the mono-digliceride channel of the hyper-sub vector converter. it’s always the plug. well… sometimes its a fuse.)

  • [Can I get a witness… Thanks. -rs]

    Hey Pelosi ! Over here…

Hey, I’m happy the swing voters decided to give us Dems another chance, but I don’t think you correctly interpreted the writing on the wall.

We are the LESSER of two evils, get it? And that’s pretty goddam hard to beat.

    cowards
    commies
    socialists
    traitors
    whiners
    unpatriotic
    liars

And whatever else I forgot to put on the list.

Now if that’s the lesser of two evils, please, for heavens sakes! Impeach that bastard!

Now that is pretty damn funny 😉
