Tuesday’s Mini-Report

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* Bloodshed in Baghdad: “Car bombs and a suicide attacker struck crowded areas in Baghdad and former insurgent strongholds to the north and west of the capital Tuesday, killing dozens and breaking a recent lull in violence in the predominantly Sunni areas. The attacks were a deadly reminder of the threat posed by suspected Sunni insurgents even as clashes between Shiite militia fighters and U.S.-Iraqi forces continued elsewhere.”

* Good: “The United States military said Monday that it would release an Associated Press photographer who has been jailed in Iraq without trial for two years on accusations of terrorism and kidnapping. The announcement came after two rulings over the previous week by panels of Iraqi judges, who said that the photographer, Bilal Hussein, was covered by an amnesty law and should be released. But such decisions are not binding on the coalition forces in Iraq, and it was not clear at first whether the military would continue to hold him.”

* The worst numbers on food inflation in 17 years: “Inflation at the wholesale level soared in March at nearly triple the rate that had been forecast as energy prices kept rising and food costs posted a much bigger jump than anticipated.”

* Not a big surprise: “Deborah Jeane Palfrey was convicted this afternoon of racketeering and other charges after a federal court jury determined that her upscale escort service was actually a front for prostitution. Jurors deliberated less than eight hours before returning the verdicts against Palfrey, 52, who stood impassively, with her hands folded in front of her, as the decision was read. She will remain free pending her sentencing July 24.”

* Bush is apparently poised to give a speech tomorrow on a new climate change policy. Don’t get your hopes up — the White House is apparently pushing on global warming because Bush administration officials “fear a coming regulatory nightmare.”

* Before a speech to veterans today, a disabled vet gave Barack Obama an American flag lapel pin. Taking away Fox News’ fun, he wore it.

* Bush has gone 39 consecutive months without majority public approval. It’s the longest streak since pollsters came into existence.

* I’ll have more on McCain’s economic speech tomorrow, but until then, a “gas-tax holiday“? Really? And people wonder why it’s so difficult to take McCain’s campaign seriously.

* On a related note, MSNBC personalities are really bad at math. Shaving 18 cents off the price of a gallon of gas will not reduce prices at the pump by “20 percent.”

* Why is Rupert Murdoch joining the Associated Press’ board of directors?

* Very good advice: “The Bush administration’s latest story line about Iraq — that Iran is now the primary problem there — should be greeted with profound skepticism. Not only is it the latest in a series of rationales for U.S. involvement in Iraq, most of which have turned out to be based on flawed intelligence, misrepresentations or outright dishonesty. But there are at least two illegitimate reasons why the White House would want the American public to see Iran as a threat right now.”

* Have you signed the Sam Seder petition yet? 4,000 names and counting….

* Donald Rumsfeld is working on a memoir for a 2010 release. As a likely reflection of publishers’ interest, Rumsfeld is going with a conservative subsidiary of a publisher, and will not receive an advance. (thanks to Wiley for the heads-up)

* Don’t say Harry Reid has no sense of humor: “Senator Majority leader Harry Reid was asked just now about whether the ongoing nomination fight is hurting the party. ‘It makes me bitter,’ he said.”

* How did Fox News personality Megyn Kelly impress her colleagues at the Republican network? According to Brit Hume, Kelly “seemed to get what we’ve talked about with ‘fair and balanced news’ …. She came in believing there was a left bias in the news. That’s not common.” He quickly created an opening for her. So that’s what Fox News means by “fair and balanced.”

Anything to add? Consider this an end-of-the-day open thread.

Before a speech to veterans today, a disabled vet gave Barack Obama an American flag lapel pin. Taking away Fox News’ fun, he wore it.

picture worth thousand words,
from time to time
wear stupid fucking little flag pin.

  • Why is Rupert Murdoch joining the Associated Press’ board of directors?

To further his goal of controlling all media and by extension the corportacracy that is our government/economy.

  • Why is Rupert Murdoch joining the Associated Press’ board of directors?

Because apparently the Corporate Media doesn’t suck bad enough yet.

  • doubful,

    You are no one’s fool.
You have always done the math…
    It’s trolls that can’t count.

  • Oops…

    You are no one’s fool.
You have always done the math…
    It’s trolls† that can’t count.

†Referring here not to haiku, who I rather like…
But the refusal of Hillbots to do the math, and realize they’ve been licked in a nonsexual way.

  • Bush has gone 39 consecutive months without majority public approval. It’s the longest streak since pollsters came into existence.

Come to think of it, I have seen a few “One man, with Jesus, is a majority.” bumper stickers. I presume these refer to Junta Boy.

  • The worst numbers on food inflation in 17 years: “Inflation at the wholesale level soared in March at nearly triple the rate that had been forecast as energy prices kept rising and food costs posted a much bigger jump than anticipated.”

Tell me about it! Even being a vegetarian and thus not subject to the out of control prices of meat, you get to the point now – with $3.80/gal gasoline here in L.A. – that it’s do I drive or do I eat, and if I do those, do I pay the rent?

  • When the veteran gave the flag pin to Obama he took it and said it meant a lot to him to receive it from people who know what the flag is all about.

I think that does indeed beat all the fake patriots – and some of those who don’t “get it” I find here (unfortunately).

  • Good news (via TPM):

Times/Bloomberg has new polls of Pennsylvania, Indiana and North Carolina.

    Pennsylvania
    Clinton 46%
    Obama 41%

    Indiana
    Clinton 35%
    Obama 40%

    North Carolina
    Clinton 34%
    Obama 47%

So much for all the “bitterness.”

  • Bush is apparently poised to give a speech tomorrow on a new climate change policy. Don’t get your hopes up

Dana Perini says Bush will not outline a specific proposal. So it’s kind of like Hydrogen fueled cars (2003 State of the Union Speech) or sending a man to Mars (2004).

  • remove the gas tax!
    oil wars and global warming?
just drive more – have fun!

  • Wars and sexism and global warming and misogyny and joblessness and male chauvinism and a broken healthcare system and disrespect for women. All the problems we have facing us that we need to be pulling together to solve, and Mr. Smells Like Teen Spirit’s followers sit around writing silly haikus that are even more adolescent than the work of e.e. cummings. We need an adult in the White House, someone whose words are guaranteed to be bereft of poetry. We need Hillary Rodham Clinton. Women, who are practical creatures, know this. Childish dreamers high on “hope” and ghetto rock still don’t get it.

  • # 21, that’s a wonderful clip. It reminds people (well, thinking people) why Obama is so popular. This is what politics should be. Alas, it’s not.

    Thanks for the link.

  • do I drive or do I eat

Tom I was just saying the same thing to a guy at the pump the other day. We’re out in Riverside Co. and it’s just plain crazy here. Ride through any of these desert towns and you’ll see entire neighborhoods boarded up like ghosttowns.

If you’ve got ’em out your way, we’ve found Winco and the Fresh & Easy stores have the best prices. Even for vegheads. Costco sucks except they had good deals on milk. I also got my car tuned up and it has paid for itself immediately with the extra miles per tank.

I’d grow a garden but only grow cacti and rocks have a chance. Reminds me of a line in “Raising Arizona”: “When we didn’t have crawdads, we ate sand”

On the plus side, since we’re all staying home, my family’s getting closer.

  • Well, Insane Fake Professor finally convinced me. What this country needs is to crush all traces of hope and I”ve got my shit-kickin’ boots on, so step aside. This is my sewer and no one’s gonna steal my slime,. Take a deep breath and hold it, savor it. Smell the stench — this is real American muck, this is reality! Get used to it, embrace it, scoop it up with both hands and smear it all over. I do.

  • I agree with #20 but would see her? and raise her? at least one:

I think she/he forgot racism…somehow, someway. How could that be????

Then I would say lets us all support the most intelligent and grownup person we have had the opportunity to vote for in an eon or two. I would say:

    GO OBAMA!

just a mild mannered little ol’ grandma in sneakers who wants a better and less corporate world for her grandchildren. America by and for the Corporations is what is destroying our nation and our Earth. BIG OIL,BIG PHARMA, BIG INSURANCE, BIG FINANCE and BIG military industrial complex. If your candidate partakes of PACS he/she is part of the problem…which is what Hillary does.
    .

  • Again Insane #20:

A soul without poetry is a lost soul.

    Obama rises
    Upstream with intelligence.
    Hacking hate drifts down.

  • If Obama doesn’t win the nomination and the election, I’ll have to go on a news fast because i won’t be able to watch what is happening to the country and us.

  • Good God, I love this man: “I will never walk away from the larger point I was trying to make…” That’s right, don’t back down when you know what you’re saying is the truth!!! Another of his great lines: …”a debate I’m happy to have…” I just know those five little words makes that the presumptive Republican nominee reach for the Pepto!

p.s. I wish I was clever enough to write haiku…*sigh* — but I ain’t hatin’: you guys who are rock.

  • “When we didn’t have crawdads, we ate sand”

Classic. One of my favorite films.

That one’s followed up by the prison therapy line … “Why do you say you feel trapped in a man’s body?”

  • IDale :

If Obama doesn’t win the nomination and the election, I’ll have to go on a news fast because i won’t be able to watch what is happening to the country and us.

I’ve never agreed with any statement more that I do with this one.
    If Barack doesn’t win-win… I’m gone.
Got no desire to defend the Clintons for another second, never mind two 4 year terms.
You’d have to be frigging nuts with lasers on your forehead to go there again…

    Nope…
Been there. Done that. This dog don’t hunt that way anymore.
Got even less desire to spit at McCain for four years.
After all, spitting at the torturer Bush accomplished absolutely nothing…
    Absolutely. Fugging. Nothing.

    Nope…
I will be cashing out if Barack doesn’t win-win.
I won’t look at one blog, read one editorial, post one comment, or subscribe to one newspaper.
Won’t give a hang about anybody else’s political two cents or even my own…

    Nope…
    Not my worries anymore…
I will be literally putting a light pack on my back… And:
Seeya… en la otra vida, amigos…

  • “If Obama doesn’t win the nomination and the election, I’ll have to go on a news fast because i won’t be able to watch what is happening to the country and us.”

more than just a news fast. it would be time to leave the country. while you still can.

  • * Before a speech to veterans today, a disabled vet gave Barack Obama an American flag lapel pin. Taking away Fox News’ fun, he wore it. — CB

And *now*, he can wear this one all the time, because it’s no longer the same, meaningless, piece of enameled base metal. It would also give the vet something to brag about — see, he’s wearing *my* flag. And it would give Obama an opportunity to weave the story into his stump speeches, as an explanation for the enhanced attire.

  • People are bitter
The status quo has failed them
    They hunger for change

    The lies they are fed
When exposed to Truth’s great light
    Crumble into dust

    Democrat no more
She seeks to be one of them
    Rethuglican beast

    Wretched imp of Bush
    Supported illegal war
    Dodged phony bullets

    The People now awake
    Their wrath smites the dynasty
    to bitter ashes

  • That one’s followed up by the prison therapy line … “Why do you say you feel trapped in a man’s body?”

    My favorite movie ever.

“Yes, these were the salad days.”

  • I like that — “Fox News Personality.” Cuz it just hurts too hard to push a journalism shoe on a foot that warpy. I’m sure Regents will soon introduce a Personalityism major.

  • #21 Thanks for the clip! Great speech. I like that Obama reminded everyone of his humble beginnings without slamming his opponents or being sanctimonious about it. Just matter of fact.

What sets Obama apart from McSame and Hillary (and most other politicians) is that he is not afraid to call a spade a spade, speak truth to power. No carefully parsed words. He is not afraid to admit a mistake (in a timely manner). He speaks both plainly and intelligently. It is a huge strength.

There is an interesting article about Obama’s mother (and by extension, her son Barack) in TIME Magazine. It’s available online:
    http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1729524,00.html

  • Core inflation, which excludes energy and food, was better behaved last month…(Yahoo)

Regardless that food is energy, what could be more “core” than food and energy? Does anyone track inflation of water?

MissMudd, Yes you can. Shade cloth, “Soil Moist” crystals, and containers (plastic) with potting soil. Lettuce and the like will “bolt” (flower) on you in the heat, and tomatoes may want/need treating with blossom set spray…but you can do it if you want to do it. A half whiskey barrel will grow a lot of food, though you will have to approach the situation with some ingenuity. (For the long term, you might think about building a structured area to grow grape vines over that you’d plant other things under…it’s worked for the Greeks for a few thousand years.)

Obama nailed it, and he never mentioned her name.

  • I’ve known of Harry Reid’s dry humor. He is good at dead pan.
As for the food prices, this really is a worry. How are people going to afford anything soon.
I read alot of history and things feel really bad- 1930s bad.

  • Well I think cummings did shun capitalization, and I also love his poetry.

The post-adolescents I teach all think I’m ancient, and me ‘n my mom both respect Obama a great deal… Not least because he’s accomplished more with less-than-no name recognition in his early years in the Senate than my own pandering junior senator. (At the forefront of the battle against scary flag-burning adolescents everywhere she was… woo-hoo…)

And thanks, versemeisters (and -meisterinnen or whatever), you helped me laugh away some stress, which helps when there’s much work to be done!

  • I too extend grateful thanks to RTLMLAO at #21 for the link to the clip. Inspiring, as always, and your comparison to Atticus was (as the elite say, hehe) spot on.

Regarding growing your own veggies … get started now folks. Lex is right that you can grow a lot of stuff in relatively small spaces, even on apartment balconies if you use big enough pots. We’re expanding our veggies this year to include more than the usual tomatoes and peppers to potatoes, several varieties of corn, cucumbers and other stuff, including an expanded herb garden. I haven’t canned veggies for several years, but plan on taking it up again this year as we slide into recession and what looks to be a sure winter of our discontent. Those who might be inclined to can should look into it … it’s a lot of prep work but really satisfying ultimately when you put all those jars on your shelf waiting to be used later….

  • You realize, don’t you, that if we all start our own little victory gardens, the Reps will say, “First they hated traditional marriages, then they hated the idea of safety from terrorists; now they hate our economy. It’s always hate America first with these guys.”

  • New results from a WaPo-ABC News poll are out this morning and no doubt will get a lot of coverage today for the numbers related to HRC and BHO. Lots of interesting data, but what caught my eye and heart were responses to the question: “Thinking ahead to the November presidential election, what is the single most important issue in your choice for president?”

In seven months, the Iraq War has dropped from 35 to 18 percent; health care has dropped from 13 to 7 percent; and the economy/jobs has skyrocketed from 11 to 41%.

All other responses — including some Republican favorites — remain in single digits: Terrorism/National security (4%), Immigration/Illegal Immigration (4%), Education (2%), morals/family values (2%). Taxes, gun control and Iran don’t even register.

    Two questions…

    (1) With McCain running as Chimp II — who registers 65% disapproval on Iraq and 70% disapproval on the economy — and typical hot button Republican issues in the single digits or less, why is McCain polling even with Dems?

    (2) What kind of patriotic nation forgets about it’s men and women abroad and in the line of fire?

  • #21 Thanks for the clip! Great speech

Yep. The best part, I thought, was when he talked about working-class people “driving miles to come out for rallies for Senator Clinton, or for Senator McCain, or for myself” — a nice olive branch to people in other camps. Smart and shrewd.

  • Danp, that’s a risk that i’m willing to take. Keep in mind that some historical analysis is now suggesting that kitchen gardens kept Russian society from falling into anarchy and violence when the Soviet Union dissolved.

One word of caution about growing food on balconies…big pots full of wet soil (even potting soil) are really, really heavy. We wouldn’t want anyone’s victory garden crashing to defeat three stories below. Choose determinate varieties of tomatoes and bush cucumbers if space is dear. And don’t forget that a good many flowers are both edible and tasty. Aesthetics need not be sacrificed for food production.

If you’ve never gardened before, start learning…it’s easier than wondering where your next meal will come from in the worst case scenario. And after you chomp into that first warm, never waxed, vine-ripened cuke…well, you won’t ever want to go back.

  • Thank you Lex and Iowa VG, for the inspiration. I have gardening in my blood, raised on homegrown up in NE NC where we grew everything, and either canned it, pickled it or smoked it.. However, I’ve been out in this desert now 10 years and still haven’t acclimated to the Martian dirt and weird weather. The sun is just one of the issues. The wind here is sometimes almost hurricane style.(I’m very close to the Palm Springs Windmill farm). I bought a house out in horse country 2 years ago and for 1.5 years I had nothing but dirt and rock. Then in October, we had a weekend of close to 90mph winds and walls of dirt (known Santa Ana winds). Anything standing was blown to smithereens. Finally we had rain in the winter so now I’m tackling the most bizarre array of weeds and critters I’ve ever seen.

It’s a whole other planet out this way.

You’re absolutely right though, any time is a good time. Compost is beautiful. I once even had a wormery back in NC. I’ll never forget a volunteer sunflower that popped up in one of my raised beds. It was nearly 10ft and the face a foot across. We let the seeds simply dry while it stood and fed the birds with it. When it finally pooted out, we cut it at the base and to our surprise a gush of water burst out of the trunk. All this from compost!
