We used an up-and-coming star; they’re using a washed-up turncoat

A month after Barack Obama delivered one of the best keynote addresses I’ve ever heard, the Republicans have announced their keynote speaker for this year’s convention. You may have heard of him; his name is Zell Miller.

Ed Gillespie, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Mark Wallace, Bush-Cheney ’04 Deputy Campaign Manager, today announced Senator Zell Miller (D-GA) will deliver the keynote address at the 2004 Republican National Convention on Wednesday, September 1.

Just so we’re clear, the man the Republicans have chosen to deliver Bush’s keynote address has described John Kerry as “one of the nation’s authentic heroes” and a “great leader.” Miller also praised Kerry, whom he called “a good friend,” for a sterling record on a variety of issues.

“In his 16 years in the Senate, John Kerry has fought against government waste and worked hard to bring some accountability to Washington. Early in his Senate career in 1986, John signed on to the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Reduction Bill, and he fought for balanced budgets before it was considered politically correct for Democrats to do so. John has worked to strengthen our military, reform public education, boost the economy and protect the environment.”

Classic. Only the Republicans would ask a lawmaker to deliver a keynote address who’s called the opposition’s candidate “one of the nation’s authentic heroes.”

And can we now stop calling Zell Miller a Democrat?
