Wednesday’s Mini-Report

Today’s edition of quick hits.

* It looks like Paul Wolfowitz’s resignation from the World Bank is imminent: “Embattled World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz is negotiating an agreement to resign, according to an official familiar with the talks. His departure would include an acknowledgment from the bank that he doesn’t bear sole responsibility for the controversy surrounding a generous pay package for his girlfriend, the official said. The negotiations were taking place as the bank’s board resumed deliberations over Wolfowitz’s fate Wednesday afternoon.”

* Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) today became the highest-profile Republican lawmaker to call for Alberto Gonzales’ resignation: “The American people deserve an Attorney General, the chief law enforcement officer of our country, whose honesty and capability are beyond question. Attorney General Gonzales can no longer meet this standard. He has failed this country. He has lost the moral authority to lead…. America is a nation of laws. In the interest of the American people, Alberto Gonzales should resign now.”

* On a related note, we talked earlier about Gonzales’ latest example of getting caught lying under oath. Apparently, the news did not go unnoticed by Dem senators, four of whom demanded an explanation today.

* The latest private, unaccountable email in the Bush administration: the Department of Education. Considering all of the recent scandals there, this matters quite a bit.

* On a related note: “A Texas businessman listed as a major fundraiser for President George Bush has made millions of dollars in profits from a federal reading program that critics say favored administration cronies at the expense of schoolchildren. A company founded and owned by Randy Best, who is listed by the nonprofit group Public Citizen as a Bush ‘Pioneer’ during the 2000 presidential campaign, received the lucrative contracts under a Bush administration initiative called Reading First.”

* Here’s a fun one: the Pentagon wants the troops to check its YouTube channel … and then bans the troops’ access to YouTube. Perfect.

* Kevin Drum: “The Commonwealth Fund has released its latest comparison of healthcare performance among various countries, and you can read all about it here. However, since I know you’re all busy people, I’ll just cut to the chase: we suck. Despite the fact that we see doctors less often, go to the hospital less often, and stay in the hospital for shorter times than any of the other countries in the report, we still spend by far the most money. In return for this we get lousier care.” Read the rest.

* WaPo media critic Howard Kurtz responded to charges that the media neglected to take the Giuliani-blows-off-farmers story seriously enough. His take isn’t exactly persuasive.

* You know those great ads launched by VoteVets.org? The third one is out today, this time featuring Wesley Clark.

* For all the attention the Bush gang gave to alleged “voter fraud” cases, it turns out that “between October 2002 and September 2005, just 38 cases were brought nationally, and of those, 14 ended in dismissals or acquittals, 11 in guilty pleas, and 13 in convictions.” Just 38 cases? Total?

* Eric Boehlert makes an excellent case that the Washington Post, among other news outlets, applies different standards to liberal and conservative blogs, with the left getting the short end of the stick.

* If you happen to be in Sydney, Australia, during Bush’s upcoming visit, don’t expect to get good cell phone coverage: “News Limited papers report the sophisticated counter-terrorism measure will be used to prevent mobile phone detonated remote-control bombs. A helicopter fitted with signal-jamming equipment will shadow the President’s motorcade. It will block all mobile phone calls within an area the size of a football field.” (thanks to AYM for the tip)

* And finally, a test version of the Microsoft’s Halo 3 videogame included an in-game “award” for players who successfully kill 10 opponents in a row with a shotgun without dying. The game called the award “Cheneymania.” Microsoft confirmed to Raw Story that this tongue-in-cheek honor is in the test version, but will be changed when the game officially hits shelves in September.

Anything to add? Consider this an end-of-the-day open thread.

Is there anyone connected to this administration who is competent at his/her job?

  • The Attorney Freaking General lies under oath, and four Democratic senators “request an explanation”.

Seems like a couple dozen Democratic senators should be scheduling a vote on his impeachment.

But I guess that won’t happen until Gonezales eats a live baby on national TV during prime time.

    Sheesh.

  • Mwahaha. Looks like Wolfie is feeling a mite sheepish. I hope the WB tells him to stick his letter in one of his holey socks. I wonder what his next gig will be. Maybe he’ll replace Gonezo. Speaking of which, I’m willing to bet his antics at Ashcroft’s sick bed are what finally lead to him getting the boot.

“A helicopter fitted with signal-jamming equipment will shadow the President’s motorcade. It will block all mobile phone calls within an area the size of a football field.”

OMG! The Aussies are giving the terrists advance notice of our tactics! Time to bomb the land down under! [/snark]

If you happen to be in Sydney during its visit, please moon his motorcade.

  • The degree to which Congress is pussy-footing around Abu-G is very indicative of how difficult it would be to bring real impeachment charges against the head of the Bush Mafia.

If there were real oversight, and a commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law, going after these guys would be a no-brainer.

Unless there are real-world consequences for High Crimes and Misdemeanors, we will never be able to put this genii back in the bottle.

  • Well it looks like there’s now gonna be available a true believer Bushie tanned, rested, and ready to step in when Abu finally goes or is forced out.

  • Eric Boehlert makes an excellent case that the Washington Post, among other news outlets, applies different standards to liberal and conservative blogs, with the left getting the short end of the stick.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: were today’s Washington Post to be the WaPo of 1972-74, Nixon would still be President-for-Life.

  • Wolfie is responding to his mess like a typical damn Bushie: nothing was his fault, everyone else is to blame and he’s a victim. Now he’s tryuing to get the World Bank board to clear his name. Screw him. The Wolfowitz name is mud and, like the Bush name will forever be associated with incompetence, cronyism and deceit.

The one weakness of every Bushie is their ego. And like Wolfowitz the rest of the planet needs to constantly remind them that they are, and always will be, LOSERS.

  • what the hell is wolfie negotiating? the only question should be whether the world bank allows the door to hit him in the ass on his way out!

  • After the big discussion here yesterday about how to talk about Jerry Falwell’s demise, I thought I would mention that Ann Coulter managed to blame Ted Kennedy for 9/11 while paying tribute to Falwell in her latest column. The column is so over the top, I posted it at the TPM Cafe for laughs.

  • Eric Boehlert nails the criminally negligent Washington Post! Katherine Graham is NOT resting in peace. Obsequious bastards!

  • Nitpick… Senators can’t schedule a vote on impeachment all they can do is call on their House brethren to start the process.

  • O.T. but besides reading Ann Coulter’s dumb Falwell column today, I compared an 11/10/05 Defense Industry Daily story to an 11/12/0 The Advisor story in a TPM Cafe post. The Advisor is a weekly report published by Centcom.

On 11/10/05, Defense Indsutry Daily reported that delivery of 72 refurbished tanks to the Iraqi Army was held up by the contractor for non-payment by the Iraqi government. Apparentlhy, this was a big deal because the DoD wanted the Iraqi army to have the tanks before the 12/05 General Election.

But on 11/12/05, Centcom’s The Advisor reported that delivery of the tanks was completed by 11/11/05. The Centcom reporter, Sargent Lori Jewell, included quotes from a US officer and two Iraqi officers in her story along with photos of the tanks. The tank delivery story was also reported by Sargent Jewell on the Defend America website.

On 11/14/05, Defense Industry Daily reported that it had heard from the contractor and Centcom and that the Iraqi government had paid the contractor. Defense Industry Daily reported that dleivery would proceed on schedule.

On 11/21/05, Defense Industry Daily reported that The Advisor had carried an 11/12/05 story about the tank delivery but DID not comment on why there was a discrepancy between its stories and The Advisor’s story.

I suspect Centcom published two fake news stories about the tank delivery, complete with fake photos. If the tanks were delivered by 11/11/05, either the contractor or Centcom would have told Defense Industry Daily and the fact would have been reported in the 11/14/05 story.

Say Centcom did publish two fake news stories about the tank deliveries. Where does Centcon draw the line if it published a fake news story on a website named Defend America? How would we know when to believe the DoD if it fakes interviews and photos?

(I posted a link below to my comments about the tank delivery story at the TPM Cafe where I posted all relevant links and some of the news stories.)

  • 4/30/07:

World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz lashed back at critics today who he alleged were conducting a “smear campaign” against him and vowed he would not resign over what he termed unfair charges.

Almost simultaneously at a news conference in the White House Rose Garden, U.S. President George W. Bush reiterated his support for Wolfowitz…

The Boy King doesn’t like losing.
It makes him go from pissy to super-pissy.

Kevin Drum is right: Can you imagine who Bush is going to nominate as a “screw you” replacement?

He ought to go with Harriet.
She’d do anything for him and his family.

  • But….

I think he will probably select James Baker after ruminating so :

    “Because baker see…
    Is kinda like banker see…”

  • From Downunder please don’t bomb us.Not only the cell phones are to be blocked but three train stations are to be closed during the little shrubs visit. Last time he visited all traffic across the harbour bridge was stopped. It’s funny what one arsehole will do for another arsehole.Plese impeach him before his next visit.

  • mellowjohn 8: I do believe Woofie when he says he’s got dirt on other top bank officials. The question they’re negotiating would then be: How much to make you go away?
