Wednesday’s political round-up

Today’s installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn’t generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* Last month, a Rasmussen poll showed Sen. [tag]Mike DeWine[/tag] (R) leading Rep. [tag]Sherrod Brown[/tag] (D) by seven points in Ohio’s closely watched Senate race. Now, Rasmussen shows Brown taking a narrow lead, 44% to 42%.

* Speaking of Ohio, Rasmussen also shows Rep. [tag]Ted Strickland[/tag] (D) continuing to lead Ohio Secretary of State [tag]Ken Blackwell[/tag] by double digits, 50% to 39%. The margin is about the same as every Rasmussen poll since March.

* California Gov. [tag]Arnold Schwarzenegger[/tag] (R) has built a modest, but hardly insurmountable, lead over [tag]Phil Angelides[/tag] (D) in a new Rasmussen poll, 47% to 41%. There appears to be a significant gender gap: Schwarzenegger leads by 18 points among men but trails by six among women.

* Kansas Gov. [tag]Kathleen Sebelius[/tag] (D), who is strongly favored to win a second term, now has an opponent. State Sen. [tag]Jim Barnett[/tag] (R) won a crowded primary yesterday to become the GOP gubernatorial nominee.

* Dems have looked to New Hampshire as a state with key House pick-up opportunities, but a new Granite State Poll offers little encouragement. Republican incumbents [tag]Jeb Bradley[/tag] and [tag]Charles Bass[/tag] both hold solid leads over their Democratic challengers.

* And in West Virginia, Republican congressional candidate [tag]Chris Wakim[/tag], taking on Rep. Alan Mollohan (D), is under fire for allegedly exaggerating his academic and military background. Most notably, Wakin claims on his official bio to be a veteran of the first Gulf War, but during the conflict, he trained soldiers in Massachusetts and never went to the Middle East. Wakim believes serving in the military during the war qualifies him as a “Gulf War veteran,” but an Army official told The Hill, “You need a combat patch or Southwest Asia Service Medal to be a veteran of Desert Storm.” Wakin has neither.

Sorry to blogwhore, but I thought you’d find this item on Santorum’s crooked campaign ad interesting.

  • The Republikanner beast just cannot seem to learn that one does not lie about being a war veteran, in order to get elected.

Oh, and Zoe—Santorum’s “site” isn’t even spelled right, and it’s subhosted through “go-daddy.” Just goes to show that the Republikanner beast hasn’t changed its spots—it’s always okay in the GOP to “invent” Truth. So, maybe I’ll invent a little truth as well about “Rectal Rickie and his Santorum Sodomites.”

Turnabout is fair play, you know….

  • To add to the off-topic list, CNN posted a story today re: a GAO report detailing how easy it is to cross the border with a fake ID. As an endnote to the story, the report stated that:

“A law requiring travelers entering the United States to present passports or other secure documents is slated to take effect in 2008, but some members of Congress are trying to delay that law.”

I love to know which members of Congress are blocking this plan. Anyone know?

  • CB writes: “There appears to be a significant gender gap: Schwarzenegger leads by 18 points among men but trails by six among women.”

    Sounds like the grope gap.

  • Eadie,

I love to know which members of Congress are blocking this plan. Anyone know?

Great question. Mr. Carpetbagger, any insight here?

  • Conservative Republicans still find it difficult to vote for a nig- oops, colored guy for governor.
