In an effort to defend Bush’s ridiculous (and recklessly dishonest) stem-cell research policy, BC04 arranged for two senators to defend the president’s policy.
At a time when polls show overwhelming support for the research, Sens. Gordon Smith (Ore.) and Trent Lott (Miss.) expressed concern that Bush is not receiving his due for allowing some federally funded research to go forward while Kerry is not being properly scrutinized for supporting the more controversial “therapeutic” cloning. That involves creating a cloned embryo for the sole purpose of research.
So, Smith and Lott are on Bush’s side? Not exactly.
[B]oth said they are pushing the White House to embrace an expansion of the policy advocated by Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry.
In other words, Bush-Cheney arranged a campaign conference call to let reporters talk to two Republican senators who agree with Kerry on a critical area of public health policy.
Only the Bush campaign would highlight support from lawmakers who think Bush is wrong.
Reports of Karl Rove’s brilliance have been greatly exaggerated.
