When a Republican becomes a little too ‘pro-family’

Once in a while, it’s important to remind far-right religious conservatives that being “pro-family” does not mean you can have two of them.

Republican [tag]Jim Galley[/tag], who is running for Congress as a “pro-traditional family” candidate, was married to two women at the same time, defaulted on his child support payments and has been accused of abuse by one of his ex-wives.

The San Diego [tag]Union-Tribune[/tag] discovered the personal history in making public-records checks on Galley, who is making his fourth run for elective office in four years. These checks are part of the newspaper’s election reporting process.

Galley married his second wife, Beth, in 1982 when, unbeknownst to her, he was still married to his first wife, Terry. Beth and Galley divorced in 1990 after she sought a restraining order alleging abuse. The child support was owed to his first wife.

Galley claims the polygamy was an accident, the child support default was short-term (a few months), and the abuse allegation was made only to get him out of the house.

But wait, there’s more. Galley also claims to have been drafted by the [tag]Navy[/tag] during the [tag]Vietnam[/tag] War and “serviced my time.” The [tag]San Diego[/tag] Union-Tribune discovered through a FOIA request, however, that Galley started his Navy service almost a year after the draft ended and that he was discharged less than six weeks later, while in “recruit training.” Oops.

The truth is, Galley has never been considered a serious challenger. He was going to lose and these revelations will only help seal the deal. That said, it’s also worth noting that former Rep. [tag]Brian Bilbray[/tag] (R), who hopes to replace Duke Cunningham in a special election on Tuesday, threw his support behind Galley’s campaign. Let’s hope Bilbray doesn’t list “good judge of character” among his best qualities.

I think Republicants need to be reminded: It’s the hypocrisy, stupid. Well, and the lying. And the corruption. And the intolerance. And the economy. And the war. and the…okay I guess it’s not that simple.

  • Kool aid drinkers will always support other kool aid drinkers. If Busby defeats Bilbray, the Rethugs will have to get a bigger punch bowl. (smile)

  • Are we sure he isn’t a Mormon (there are a lot of them in San Diego) and they are generally Republicans???? Just joking.

This sort of abuse is so typically Republican – like Jack Ryan in Illinois forcing his wife to go to sex clubs in NYC with him, or like Susan Smith (she who put her boys in the back of the car and sent it into a lake to kill them) who was abused repeatedly by her step-father, the head of the “Christian” Coalition in South Carolina (I guess he was a “traditional” southerner).

Reminds me of a friend of mine from high school in Colorado who was the biggest horn dog in the class, and who – by 1966, when it was still illegal – told me he had paid for 8 abortions. That bit of news didn’t go well when he appeared at my 30th-year reunion as a Good Christian who was running for elective office back there – apparently he’d never told his wife of any of this, so when I asked him if God had forgiven him for all those abortions back when they were crimes, she was pretty surprised, as was his campaign manager and later the reporter from the Denver Post. Of course he had to “preserve his family from adverse publicity” when he dropped the race the next week before the article in the Post came out. (Further proof you really really really shouldn’t make a career out of stealing the girlfriends of your alleged “best friends” – they tend to remember those events and generally fail to forgive.)

Republican: a synonym for rapist, defendant, hypocrite, thief, bank robber, murderer, liar, cheat… the list goes on. And on.

  • I thought the whole purpose of banning gays from getting married was to eliminate such practises like polygamy?

    Too damned funny.
