‘Why should I care about North Korea?’

Bob [tag]Woodward[/tag]’s “[tag]State of Denial[/tag]” notes that Gov. George W. [tag]Bush[/tag] was ready to run for president in 1998, but had a small problem: he didn’t know anything about foreign policy. Indeed, by his own admission, he’d lived five decades without having given it much thought.

Bush’s worried father, who does know a bit about international affairs, brought in Prince [tag]Bandar[/tag], the long-time Saudi ambassador to the United States, to help tutor the governor and would-be [tag]president[/tag] on what he needed to know.

One exchange from a tutoring session stands out today.

George W. pulled Bandar aside.

“Bandar, I guess you’re the best asshole who knows about the world. Explain to me one thing.”

“Governor, what is it?”

“Why should I care about [tag]North Korea[/tag]?”

Bandar said he didn’t really know. It was one of the few countries that he did not work on for King Fahd.

“I get these briefings on all parts of the world,” Bush said, “and everybody is talking to me about North Korea.”

“I’ll tell you what, Governor,” Bandar said. “One reason should make you care about North Korea.”

“All right, smart alek,” Bush said, “tell me.”

“The 38,000 American troops right on the border.” …”If nothing else counts, this counts. One shot across the border and you lose half these people immediately. You lose 15,000 Americans in a chemical or biological or even regular attack. The United State of America is at war instantly.”

“Hmmm,” Bush said. “I wish those assholes would put things just point-blank to me. I get half a book telling me about the history of North Korea.”

Apparently, policy experts were giving Bush briefing books filled with facts, history, and context — the kinds of things with which the leader of the free world might want to be familiar.

But didn’t care for this approach. He preferred to get a tutor from his Dad — Bush, with his unique charm, referred to the tutor as “asshole” — who would help him breeze past the details.

Digby, noting this anecdote in a post a few days ago, said:

I’m really beginning to resent all those people who say Bush really is smart, he’s just incurious. No. He’s clearly an idiot and an arrogant, immature idiot at that. He’s been manipulated by a bunch of wily, evil men with competing agendas creating lawlessness, chaos and incoherence in our government.

Over the last six years when we watched Bush shift uncomfortably and babble incomprehensibly in response to complicated questions, when we saw him lash out at anyone who dared to question his judgment or his authority, when we observed him humiliating those around him, we weren’t hallucinating and it wasn’t an act. This intellectually deficient, petulant man-child was exactly what he appeared to be — and his inept, arrogant administration is a perfect reflection of him.

What you see is what you get…. Honestly, when all the smoke has cleared (if it ever does) I think the overriding lesson we can take from all this is that when someone looks and acts incredibly stupid or incredibly crazy they probably shouldn’t be elected president and vice president of the United States. Perhaps this is the insight that could heal the red-blue divide once and for all.

We’ve all made jokes for years about the president’s limited intellectual prowess, but some days, it’s a little more difficult to accept than others.

Bush is just another typical rich kid asshole! Unfortuneately he was allowed to steal the Presidency.

  • Hell, he was allowed to steal the Republican nomination. Why or why did they think he was the best candidate they could put up in 2000?

  • And yet we keep getting Sasquatch type glimpses of a Competent Bush, mostly through Woodward’s books. The first book had Bush acting like a man in charge, the latest book has a quote about how decisive a leader Bush was. What are we to make of these?

  • North korea has been mishandled and ignored since the Bush & Co siezed power. This test is an act of desperation from a failed leader who is in charge of feeding his starving people. When Bush became the president he refused to honor a number of treaties and agreements that the Clinton administration had agreed to. We had an agreement with North Korea; Bush failed to honor it. Instead of feeding his hungry enemies as a follower of Jesus is supposed to do, he started the “Axis of Evil” stuff and now we see the results of his inaction. I’m beginning to wonder if our nation can survive two more years of even a lame duck Bush.

  • Indeed, by his own admission, he’d lived five decades without having given it much thought.

Except if the thought was how he could keep out of places where foreign policy might result in his being shot.

The more I learn about the jug eared puke stain posing as a leader the more he sounds exactly like the idiot son of a king who needs special tutors to teach him not to whip it out and start wanking. “No your highness, you must wait until you are alone to do that.”

For those of you who are wondering how Shrubby got into Yale: Money. I would bet all of my hard-earned cash that his admissions forms (filled out by Babs perhaps) arrived with a very large “donation.”

    “Bandar, I guess you’re the best asshole…

The best what? In light of the last fortnight’s events it sounds like Shrub was hitting on him or something.

  • Can one be intelligent without being curious? Can one be curious without being intelligent?

Any intelligent words that have come from Bush’s mouth in the past 6 years were almost certainly words written by his speech writers.

Should anyone who has so openly despised those inclined toward intellectualism ever be elected president? Should anyone who openly admits judging by their gut, visceral reactions be deemed worthy of consideration for any higher office?

George Armstrong Custer Bush. We got em boys! Talk about leading us into the grande ambush!

  • One can imagine that people producing briefing books for a man who is a graduate of Yale and Harvard Business School, who had, in fact, attained the Presidency, could be forgiven for assuming that their reader would already know that the US has thousands of troops in South Korea. There are some things that adults are just supposed to know.

Even people who only watched the TV show M*A*S*H know that we have already fought a war there once.

How simple (excuse me, ‘point-blank’) does he want it to be? Perhaps his briefing books should start with a remember to breathe as reads.

  • In the past I have been in the “Bush is an idiot” camp. But I’ve seen him win a mid-term election in 2002 and the presidential election in 2004 (in 2000 he was, of course, simply appointed and lost the popular vote). The view that Bush is an idiot is too simplistic a view of Bush. The criticisms of Bush are all on target. He is lazy, he is incurious, he has a huge sense of entitlement and he has the arrogance of the deeply insecure. Desite his Texan act, Bush displays all of the worst traits of his class without any of the virtues. When it comes to politics and winning (or stealing) elections, Bush knows what he’s doing. Politically the man is not an idiot. You can’t look at the smoking ruin that has been the Democratic campaigns and believe that Bush is simply a moron. He worked on his father’s campaign and he learned from it. People who assume that Bush is simply a moron tend to find that they have been defeated by Bush. In fact, Bush has made a career of appearing to be nothing but an idiot. He counts on being underestimated and this has happened many times.

  • So what’s the Democratic response? Foley’s already slipped from being the top story, which coincidentally give the Republicans a chance to change the topic.

Some media outlets are already saying this crisis looks favorable for Republicans:

The news out of North Korea, bad as it might be for the Administration’s diplomatic efforts there, returns Bush to the bully pulpit — he’ll make a statement at 9:45 am — and may help Republicans return the focus to the more favorable, broader security debate. For example, Republicans occasionally hit certain Democrats for opposing a missile defense shield.

Shouldn’t we be hearing about what a big fucking failure George W. Bush and the Republicans are from the Democrats? Here’s a chance to build the big narrative — tie together Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea. Do it before they can spin this into a positive.

  • Re #9: Bush is an idiot, but politics has changed in a fundamental way. He is the public face of a group of people who have seized political power and exercise it through Bush. They escape much of the responsibility of their failed policies because those policies are on the record as Bush’s policies. I’m not so politically aware that I could identify this group, though it probably includes Cheney, Rumsfeld, maybe Kissinger. But it is a reasonable hypothesis that does explain two otherwise contradictory facts: one, everything we see of him shows Bush to be an idiot and, two, he wins elections.

  • The first quality that the voters should look for in a presidential candidate is intelligence (Bill Clinton had that in spades). The second quality to look for is policy and vision (Bush’s are dismal).

Nevertheless, the American people elected a burned-out party animal (a.k.a.– share-a-beer friendly). And we ask ourselves why is the country headed in the wrong?

  • I think it’s wrong to say Bush has “been manipulated by a bunch of wily, evil men” because it implies that he’s somewhat innocent and is being led astray on the wrong path. He’s playing the part of Charlie McCarthy to the wily, evil men’s Edgar Bergen. While I don’t think he’s smart enough to execute whatever agenda they have in store for the USA and the world (god this sounds conspiracy like, doesn’t it), he’s definitely signed off on it.

  • why did they think he was the best candidate they could put up in 2000?

Because he was the candidate that would without question stick to the program. Because he was the best sort of puppet — one who would move as desired without a single string being pulled. McCain had too much intelligence and integrity (yes, I know — still too much) for the powers that control the GOP. He would have insisted on being president, not just playing one on TV.

  • There needs to be a No Presidential Candidate Left Behind test that assesses a candidate’s minimum competence to hold high office. W would have flunked his. If you have to pass a test to drive a car, shouldn’t a presidential candidate have to pass a test to operate a country?

W and Kim Jog Il are birds of a feather: arrogant, foolish, propped up by their cult of personality and in high office because of who their daddy was. And look what they’ve done to their respective nations.

  • Open scene – GW and Jeb are in the treehouse in Kennebunkport playing the Cuban Missle Crisis game. All of a sudden one of the branches holding the treehouse begins to crack…

Jeb: “Did you hear that W?! We have to get out of here!”
GW: “Hear it, can’t you smell it? HaHaHa! I think is was the bologna and cheese from lunch.”
Jeb: “No, not that, the tree branch is going ot fall off!”
GW:”What, uhhha, tell me why I care Jeb. I’m sitting in the treehouse not on the tree branch, stupid dummy.”
Jeb: “The tree house is ON the tree branch!”
    GW: “Huh?”

Jeb erases map of Cuba from the treehouse chalkboard and draws a picture of the treehouse in the tree….

Jeb:”Do you get it now? If the branch goes the treehouse will fall and we will fall with it!
GW: “Kewwl! Just like paratroopers! Hehe!” (makes shooting noises) AIR ASSAULT!!!!!
    Jeb: “I’m outta here!”
GW:”OK Jeb, we’ll get going but one last thing…NURPLE!!!!!!!! he he he he he”

    Close scene

  • I don’t think Bush has problems making decisions.

    He is the decider afterall.

Unfortunately, the decisions are usually wrong or dead wrong.

  • There is a good link over at Talking Points Memo that give some important background on NK //www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2004/0405.kaplan.html

  • Folks, the answer is simple: we get the government we deserve. Lots and lots of good, loyal Americans don’t do enough research and thinking to establish authentic “reasons” for voting for so and so. I have many smart friends who “just don’t have the time” to read and decide who is full of shit. Lots of folks will go on “autopilot” with regard to their decisions. Voting all for Dems or all for Repubs is wrong. More thought and reasoning must be brought to bear on the decision making process. But it takes time and energy – time and energy they spend watching TV, listening to MSM radio and news, reading worthless periodicals, etc. If we continue to go about our lazy way of choosing leaders, we wil always have the chance for another Dubya. Thoughtful folks should have seen through him from the first glance – but he was sold to us just as soap is sold to the public. We did not ask enough questions, demand enough answers, think enough about what Dubya was all about. Now we know – he is about NOTHING. The thing which scares me more and more is that now we have people thinking Jeb Bush might be the next heir apparent. Are you frightened enough yet? Well, the answer is simple – the same way you research the new car or the new appliances, you should research the candidates. Check up on their track records, be involved, pay attention to their words. As an example – someone should have know that Dubya only bought the ranch in Texas to appeal to the mid westerners and the bible belters. How come he is the only “Bush” who has a Texas “drawl”? He was born in the northeast (CT. I believe) and went to Ivy league schools (andover, yale). Dubya never had a real job and was contstantly getting bailed out by dads friends and such. Being the Governor of Texas is an easier job than being Lt Governor – but everybody thought becuase dubya was governor – well he must know who to govern. They were all wrong. Dubya can campaign – he cannot govern. Look at who he brought to the whitehouse (can you say Nixon redux?) I mean, if anybody needed to know where we were headed, they only had to learn about dubya. But as I said, we are too lazy to wonder about such things. What time is American Idol on tonight? See what I mean? Cheers…

  • The news out of North Korea, bad as it might be for the Administration’s diplomatic efforts there, returns Bush to the bully pulpit — he’ll make a statement at 9:45 am — and may help Republicans return the focus to the more favorable, broader security debate. For example, Republicans occasionally hit certain Democrats for opposing a missile defense shield.

A year ago I would have been concerned about this turn of events but I think over the last 12 months it’s finally sunk in to a majority of the people what an incompetent fuckup Bush really is. The overwhelming catastrophe that is Iraq is in plain view most days on the evening news. As the poll numbers go south on all things W, I don’t see how anyone could see anything but a fucking disaster on the horizon with the Bushies out front on a showdown with North Korea.

  • The only way to give W a briefing book is to ask, “what do you want this book to say,” then write that and hand it to him. Shouldn’t take more than 3 minutes, and you’ll be on track for a cabinet position.

  • Bush, with his unique charm, referred to the tutor as “asshole”

Which makes me wonder: Who the hell told Woodward this story? Bandar himself??

The story goes on to say that Colin Powell joined them — did Powell overhear the exchange?

  • But Bush is The Decider. He’s got too few facts in hand to base his decisions on and not enough intellect to reason out his decisions, but by gum he looks those problems in the eye and comes to decisions. Nearly all are wrong, but that’s another matter altogether.

“There needs to be a No Presidential Candidate Left Behind test that assesses a candidate’s minimum competence to hold high office.”
But we knew his limitations when he was running. He muffed questions about foreign leaders, his debates and press conference answers were awful whenever the true Bush shone through, and Molly Ivins told us all we needed to know. However, not enough people cared. and too many people went with the facile conceit that there was no difference beween Gore and Bush.

There have been quite a few reasonably decent leaders who weren’t very smart, and more than a few who were brilliant but awful (e.g., Herbert Hoover). However, Bush combines zero curiosity with either no interest in getting good advice or no ability to tell good advice from bad, plus he’s a grade A asshole. That’s not a good combination.

  • Wow! What an idea. Cole’s notes for presidents and candidates. Would sell one copy at least.
