‘Woodstein’ weighs in on Plame scandal

It’s nice to see the last two reporters who helped bring down a corrupt presidency weigh in on the latest scandal to burden a different corrupt presidency.

Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein appeared together on CNN yesterday afternoon, in part to promote their new book on Mark Felt and Watergate. But, in light of current events, the conversation naturally turned to the latest White House fiasco. It was interesting to hear these two draw comparisons between their scandal and the Plame scandal.

Wolf Blitzer, for example, asked Bernstein if “there’s another Watergate type of situation unfolding now.” Bernstein responded:

“I think all situations are different. I think that obviously when you see Scott McClellan there today, you have an indication of the disingenuousness that has attended this episode from the point of view of the White House. To say that the Nixon White House was disingenuous, is an understatement and I think we also have a record of disingenuousness by this administration. You’ve got to judge things in their real time, not by comparison with others. But some pretty bad things seem to be happening here.”

Woodward added:

“I don’t know what this incident involving the leaked CIA agent is about or where it’s going, but the point is these things start very small and they can become incredibly large.”

So true.

Where are our Woodward and Bernsteins?

It seems like there’s a Pulitzer out there for someone who wants to bring down this president. Doesn’t anyone want it?

  • I hope it get huge, huge, huge.

I do wish this administration had gotten punished for all of their other offense – most notably Iraq. But I will take this if it comes to pass. Instead of being taken down by the giant they get taken down by David and a sling-shot.

  • “these things start very small and they can become incredibly large.”

    We can only hope.

  • Not only a Pulitzer, but a potential Nobel Peace
Prize, for the necon strategy of preemptive war
would be forever discredited and repudiated. And
the world would become a far safer place. Why, we
might even treat some of the underlying causes of
terrorism itself. Solve real problems without
    military force.

Indeed, doesn’t anybody want it? I’ve been asking
    that for two years.

  • I’m living out of the country and only get some CNN, but saw W & B on the TV when deepthroat came out and my impression was that the two didn’t really like each other. Furthermore, it kinda looked like Woodward thought he was better than Bernstein and was trying to kind of make him look like a joker.

Dunno what that means, but Woodward’s quote above is very unconvincing.

  • Gary asked: “Where are our Woodward and Bernsteins?”

I think, this time around, that we are surrounded by them. As a group, the top bloggers, co-posters and astute, give a damn commentors scattered throughout the virtual community have been the driving force behind exposing most of what we know about this administrations misdeeds.

We know a lot. But the lack of ability to enforce or examine ethical wrongdoing in our congress has us hamstrung to a great extent. Plus the bad guys learned a lot from Watergate and they just stonewall like hell, keep a lid on tight and don’t tape record every bit of mischief that goes on in the Oval Office. Considering how hard they have worked to keep that lid on, we have obtained a lot of factual, damning evidence.

It’s been speculated upon plenty that Woodward and Bernstein would be getting the Cooper/Miller treatment if they were operating now.

We must take heart from such recent swamp gas emissions as Coingate, The Kentucky Three, Cunningscam and all things Delay, that the stench is starting to spread and be noticed by a larger audience.

But it’s been an effort of thousands, with some fine journalistic leadership, that will get credit for bringing whatever accountability we can to the corrupt bozos “running” this country.

  • YES YES YES,!!!!!! I’VE GOT IT, THE NEW NAME FOR THIS SCANDAL, MORE APT TO THE SITUATION, AND EASIER TO SAY:
    …………………
    ……………….
    ………………….
    ……………………
    .

    …………………………..
    KARL-GATE
