Worst…argument…ever

The right has blamed the [tag]Mark Foley[/tag] scandal on pro-gay political correctness, “tolerance and diversity,” and the left in general, because, well, just because. Some liberal blogs and the MSM also, apparently, share some responsibility.

No one seems to find these defenses particularly compelling, so the right has latched onto to a new favorite: there’s a massive conspiracy underfoot that only they can see.

Consider, for example, what House Speaker [tag]Dennis Hastert[/tag] told Rush Limbaugh today:

“There were two pieces of paper out there, one that we knew about and we acted on; one that happened in 2003 we didn’t know about, but somebody had it, and, you know, they’re trying — and they drop it the last day of the session, you know, before we adjourn on an election year….

“But, you know, this is a political issue in itself, too, and what we’ve tried to do as the Republican Party is make a better economy, protect this country against terrorism — and we’ve worked at it ever since 9/11, worked with the president on it — and there are some people that try to tear us down. We are the insulation to protect this country, and if they get to me it looks like they could affect our election as well.”

I knew it; Osama bin Laden is behind the Mark Foley scandal. Based on Hastert’s comments, it all makes sense now. House Republicans are, as he put it, “the insulation to protect this country.”

For what it’s worth, the unhinged House Speaker isn’t the only one to embrace bizarre conspiracy theories.

[tag]Rush Limbaugh[/tag] sees the evil forces at work…

On the October 2 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh suggested that the recent resignation of former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL), which came after allegations that Foley sent inappropriate emails to a 16-year-old male congressional page, was a “set … up” “coordinated” by the Democrats. Limbaugh also stated that “the orgy and the orgasm that has been taking place in the media since Friday and with the Democrats is … all coordinated, and it’s … all oriented toward the election.” He added, “There’s no concern about the kid,” and blamed Democrats, because “[i]n their hearts and minds and their crotches, they don’t have any problem with what Foley did. They’ve defended it over … the years.”

…and so does [tag]Sean Hannity[/tag].

“Do you find it a little more than curious that some of these instant messages that went back and forth are, you know, several years old, and were only released after the Republican primary election was finished, which makes it difficult to replace him on the ballot? Do you find the timing, the fact that they’ve had — some people have known about these for years, and that they’re only released at this point? Is that curious to you? […]

“Apparently some of these instant messages are three years old. So I think we all have to have a question raised here. I want to know why these instant messages were held back until now. Who knew about them? Why did they hold them back? Did they do it for political reasons? In other words, were they held back to maximize the political impact before an election?”

Is it really that difficult to condemn Foley for his conduct and criticize House GOP leaders for failing to take the issue seriously? Is it really that much easier for powerful far-right clowns to embrace conspiracy theories?

Don’t answer that; I know the answer.

LOL.

I would “laugh out loud” at such fiction. But these far-right clowns know how gullible their audiences are. As one of our posters call them: Sheeple.

  • It is a conspiracy! Let’s see now. The Democrats, fearing a Republican landslide in the future, solicited several wayward teenage boys to seduce the poor Congressman, and catch him unawares in 2003 or was that 2001?. They didn’t release the information sooner because they were waiting to catch the poor speaker asleep at the switch. It’s all very suspicious. By the way, would you like to buy a bridge?

  • Thanks CB. How hard could it be?

Hannity and Limbauch are just rightwing nut bloggers who happened to be on the airwaves. They take the craziest crap and sell it like soap.

You’re right, slip kid no more, there’s sheeple and people like Limbaugh are the Woolfles in $500 dollar sheep clothing.

  • For those who live in conspiracies to shape and manipulate news and information, it’s pretty easy to believe in others’ conspiracies, whether real or imagined.

  • And of course, these sneaky Democrats would hold on to these IM’s since 2003 and not relase them in time for the 2004 national election since they knew they would have much more effect in an off-year election in 2006. Machiavelli would be humbled by such craftiness and planning.

  • Can someone explain to me how this can all be a liberal conspiracy when:

    1. The lone Dem on the page committee was never informed of the e-mails, while Denny and Co. were.

    2. Faux News also had the transcripts and did nothing.

These people are nucking futs. Seriously … Clinically. Freakin’. Insane.

  • I think the Speaker was dumped on his head a few too many times back in his wrestling days. Who would have thought the Dems would have had an October surprise handed to them that breaks in our favor? Rove the Rat is going to have to come up with something pretty spectacular to take the heat off W’s minions in congress this time.

  • Hey, I know, Foley is Osama Bin Laden and…and… no wait, that would give the Democrats credit for getting rid of him…crap.

This is such a replay of the Clarence Thomas hearings: Anita Hill was accused of being some sort of minion of NOW (National Organization for Women) when she came forward with her accusations about the stupidest bastard to ever sit on the SC.
All they need to do is reanimate Strom Turdmon so he can wheeze “Please speak into the machine.” I guess these kids came from the HRC. Or maybe they aren’t really kids! They’re just adults who look really young. Yeah. And the Democrats put them in the page program years ago. Yeah. That’s why people went out of the way to tell Republican pages to watch out for Foley years ago. They knew these impostors were likely to come up with a pack of lies if Foley so much as looked at them. Yeah. Now I gotta go, the giant radioactive weasles are back!

Seriously, I think it is amusing (in a vomit-inducing sort of way) how these cranks are trying to tread the narrow line between seeming sympathetic towards Foley and those who covered for him, while at the same time they must defend the Greedy Onanist Party.

    Good luck pigs!

  • The outhouse has done blown-up and it’s all over yard! And Republicans blame everybody but themselves.

  • What’s really funny about Red State, Limbaugh, Hannity and all the others going batshit crazy over this so-called Democratic/blog/left wing media/al Queda conspiracy is that one of their own, namely Karl Rove, has made a career out of doing worse to Democrats. How quickly they forget Swift boating is almost laughable. I highly doubt this is some sort of Democratic conspiracy–but you know what? Even if it is, who cares? Does it make it any less true? Not one bit. This scandal is of the Republican’s own making and to hear them and their enablers flail about trying to make blame everyone but themselves for this all while kissing the ground Karl Rove walks on is an absurd joke.

  • Poor Denny is twisting in the wind. Just like Trent Lott after his comments at Strom Thurmond’s 100th birthday party, we know how this is going to end.

I predict Hastert is overthrown as speaker by the time this Sunday’s round of talk shows begins.

  • KevinMC,

Will the fat guy (Hastert) be replaced with the perpetually-tan, chain-smoking lurker (Boehner)? LOL

CORRECTION: The outhouse has done blown-up and it’s all over the yard!

  • Yes, they are “the insulation to protect this country”…from reality. How low can they go? And will the sheeple ever really notice?

  • Hannity, Hassert, Limbaah are beyond help. But I am wondering about the age of these IMs. Maybe it’s a Mac thing, but I don’t log IMs for a day, much less a year or three, so where are these things coming from? E-mail I have going back quite a while, but not IMs. Anybody?

  • so it’s like this vast left wing conspiracy? i think i’ve heard something similar before…

slip kid no more: The outhouse has done blown-up and it’s all over the yard!

‘The goddamned plane has crashed into the mountain!’

  • Sure was nice of Hastert and the entire Republican heirarchy to sit on this stuff for so long so that the left wing conspiracy had time to play the hand out properly. To quote Hannity:

“Who knew about them? Why did they hold them back? Did they do it for political reasons?”

Um, Sean, are you sure you want the answers to all these questions answered? Maybe we should have a formal investigation to find out.

  • ***CORRECTION: The outhouse has done blown-up and it’s all over the yard!***
    ————————————slip kid no more

REVISED CORRECTION: The outhouse has done blown-up and it’s all over Dennis Hastert! (Film at 11….)

And I’m thinking along the same lines as KevinMc. The fat lady’s gonna sing like a church chior for this one….

  • Wait…the fat lady just called, and she doesn’t know what a “chior” is. It should be “choir….”

  • I really wish the Democratic Party had the intelligence, daring and fortitude to pull off the kind of conspiracy it would take to produce everything that’s happening to the GOPers, but we don’t. Nor do we have to: the principle of Ockham’s Razor suggests that there’s no need to construct a conspiracy when stupidity (and cupidity) will do. And god knows there’s plenty of that to go around in the GOP.

  • The Republicans are definitely the insulation to protect this country…insulation made of asbestos!

  • Wow! It’s our fault for playing politics. Amazing. What else should they expect. That’s why it amazes me that Reynolds, who knew months ago about Foley, and was the man in charge of seeing that the Republican’ts kept control of the House, did nothing to replace Foley.

If, by some amazing feat of sneakiness that Carville managed to get past Matlin’s nose, the Democrats actually planned the release of this information to effect the election, what exactly does Rush have to complain about? That we finally learned Rovian tactics?

    It is to laugh.

  • beep52: Maybe it’s a Mac thing, but I don’t log IMs for a day, much less a year or three, so where are these things coming from? E-mail I have going back quite a while, but not IMs.

do you use Adium? you can change the settings for each of the inner clients or whatever for how far back yr logs go. mail me to further discuss, if you want.

  • beep52, I also don’t fail to get my blue dress dry-cleaned… apparently some people keep things around for different purposes.

  • I really wish the Democratic Party had the intelligence, daring and fortitude to pull off the kind of conspiracy it would take to produce everything that’s happening to the GOPers

    Yo tambien.

  • Drug-addled moron Rush Limbaugh has to know that one of the first things that’s going to happen on January 21st, with our veto-proof majorities in Congress, is the re-enactment of the Fairness Doctrine, which means his gravy train will derail by my bithday next summer – what a wonderful present.

But then he can can celebrate unemployment by continuing the Republican tradition of boy-buggering on another of his Viagra Tours of the Dominican Republic with the rest of the Fat Old Trolls who can no longer get it up.

The stench of the panther sweat of fear coming off these guys like a miasmic fog is truly a thing of joy to contemplate.

  • #4

If Hastert goes how do they pick a new leader?

They go into a backroom, lock the doors, and play liar’s poker with $1,000 bills. When the new speaker is determined, white smoke comes out of Cheney’s ears.

  • […] what we’ve tried to do as the Republican Party is […] protect this country against terrorism — and we’ve worked at it ever since 9/11, worked with the president on it — Hastert

If only you had started working at it on 7/11… 9/11 might not have happened and life would have been much sweeter for most of Americans.

  • It’s a cryin shame I tell ya. Dennis could well have been our next president next year.

  • Ah, repugs. They are SO good at irony, almost as good as the Moslems who attacked and burned the churches to protest the Pope linking Islam with violence. When you’re too dense to understand irony, you always end up doing it best.

And the irony that ABC is the one to release these revelations, just a week or so after airing that GOP propaganda piece and getting raked over the coals for it, well, it’s so thick you could cut it with a knife. Just a couple shows back these same guys were probably lauding ABC for their integrity and truthfulness. Notice that none of them seem to be mentioning that it’s ABC at the forefront of all this, instead spinning these Dem conspiracy theories.

Oh, wait, theory isn’t the right word. I forgot about Dover *smirk*. I don’t think hypothesis even fits in the case of outright purposeful bullshit like this. Yeah, that’s it, “bullshit” will fill the bill just fine.
