Zell Miller wants everyone to know what a good Democrat he is

It’s a trivial point, but I found it amusing. Zell “Turncoat” Miller seems to be a tad defensive right now.

Democratic Sen. Zell Miller of Georgia has a message for critics who contend he is a longtime closet Republican. When he casts a vote for President Bush in November, it will be his first for a Republican in 52 years as a voter.

“I have never voted for a Republican in my life,” Miller told The Associated Press on Tuesday. “I have supported every Democratic campaign since 1952.”

Two quick things. One, no accuses Miller of being a “closet” Republican, we accuse him of being an out-in-the-open Republican.

Two, Miller’s comments help highlight the fact that the Republicans have chosen for this year’s keynote speaker at the GOP convention a man who voted for Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale over Reagan, Michael Dukakis over Bush pere, and Al Gore over George W. The GOP’s keynote speaker also described John Kerry as “one of the nation’s authentic heroes,” a “great leader,” and a man who “has worked to strengthen our military.”

Great choice, guys.
