A whole lot of spying going on

Way back in December 2005, we learned about a secret Pentagon database that included “intelligence” obtained by spying on anti-war protestors, who were monitored at meetings and/or events no where near military installations, posts or recruitment centers. In all, Pentagon officials kept information about four dozen protests in their “Talon” database.

What’s more, even after hundreds of protests had been deemed to be harmless and/or unconnected to the Department of Defense, they “all remained in the database.” And while the Pentagon is strictly limited in its ability to collect and retain information on American citizens, the database included “at least 20 references to U.S. citizens or U.S. persons.”

A lawsuit filed in the wake of the revelations continues to uncover interesting details.

Internal military documents released Thursday provided new details about the Defense Department’s collection of information on demonstrations nationwide last year by students, Quakers and others opposed to the Iraq war.

The documents, obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union under a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, show, for instance, that military officials labeled as “potential terrorist activity” events like a “Stop the War Now” rally in Akron, Ohio, in March 2005.

The Defense Department acknowledged last year that its analysts had maintained records on war protests in an internal database past the 90 days its guidelines allowed, and even after it was determined there was no threat.

Remember, the First Amendment explains that the “right of the people peaceably to assemble” shall not be abridged, but it doesn’t say anything about prohibiting the Pentagon spying on those same people.

I’m not saying COINTELPRO lives, but I am saying there seem to be some folks in the Bush administration who were inspired by it.

Any bets on if warantless wiretaps were used against any of these “threats?”

There’s a fool who leads a life of danger
To everyone he meets he’s a paranoid stranger
With every protest he breaks another chance he takes
Damn peaceniks won’t live to see tomorrow

Rummy’s spying plan, Rummy’s spying plan
They’re linked to database and taken away the law

Beware of Libbie ideas that you find
A Libbie face can hide an evil mind
Ah, be careful what you say
    Or you’ll give yourself away
Hope those pacifists won’t live to see tomorrow

Rummy’s spying plan, Rummy’s spying plan
They’ve given you a purpose and taken away your brain

    —— lead guitar ——

Rummy’s spying plan, Rummy’s spying plan
They’re seeing Arabs in shadows and blame those hippie freaks

Swingin’ on the streets of Peroria one day
And then laying face down in a Berkley back alley next day
Oh no, you let the wrong word slip
    Because of them Libbie shits
Those damned protestors won’t live to see tomorrow

Rummy’s spying plan, Rummy’s spying plan
They’re getting 60s flashbacks and take away your rights

  • Wouldnt take much to go from “potential terrorist activity” to “support Terrorist activity”, then it’s the “Black Bag Boys” of Homeland Defense dropping by at 2AM.

  • We are one step away from having people declared illegal combatants and locked up for life… Congress has basically given W all the tools he needs to declare Martial Law.

  • We are one step away from having people declared illegal combatants and locked up for life… Congress has basically given W all the tools he needs to impose Martial Law. All he needs is an excuse. Anyone want to make book on this happening between now and Nov. ’08? Ushering in the reign of King George IV…

  • “I want you to know, this is going down, on your permanent record.”

Yes, the Hoover Paranoia Machine is still running well. There is no need to even collect that type of information in the first place. But it shows that ShrubCo’s concern isn’t stopping terrorists, it’s keeping an eye on people who disagree with it.

And speaking of crap that doesn’t make sense, I wonder how many anti-abortion groups have a file. We know those folks tend to harbor/foster/create domestic terrorists. Fred Phelps and his ilk should have an entire warehouse to themselves. Think the Pentagon is watching them? Yeah. Right.

Dan, you owe me a new monitor.

  • taio,

that’d be like the state of Georgia keeping a file on the KKK during Jim Crow, not gonna happen.

  • So all it takes is for one nameless “military official” to slap the “potential terrorist” label on you and everything flows smoothly from there.

Once that’s on your file, the security services are obligated to treat you as a “potential terrorist” in the event of any incident which another nameless “military official” (quite concievably the same one) has elected to label as “potential terrorist activity”.

Which, thanks to your current Congress, means that you can quite easily disappear down the nearest rabbit-hole one night with no legal right to challenge the case against you. Because all the ‘evidence’ the Government might, concievebly, even hypothetically, because we can’t comment on a current investigation, use to justify your imprisonment is so super top-secret that even showing it to a Judge would be tantamount to cc-ing Jean-Kim Bin Ladenajad (or whoever) into El Residente’s e-mails. Or something.

I’m being silly , of course. it’s not like Halliburton have been contracted to build any prison camps, or anything.

    Do-Do-Do-Do Do-Do-Do-Do

  • Once you get on a list, you’re screwed. Bank deals of 5,000 terror suspects tracked

However, the extent of the banks’ involvement in neutering the terrorist threat has sparked a fierce backlash from some British Muslims amid claims of mistaken identities and the persecution of innocent account-holders. Ahmed Salama was stunned when his HSBC account was frozen nine days ago. He received a letter informing him that HSBC wished to end their relationship after 11 years.

The decision left Salama unable to pay 12 bills and his mortgage. Despite repeatedly asking for an explanation, HSBC has only told him it detected ‘suspicious’ payments in his account.

Salama, a businessman authorised by the Financial Services Authority whose account was upgraded by the bank only two months ago, said: ‘The whole situation has put my whole life in a spin, emotionally and financially. I am a normal Londoner who plays snooker once a week, a little football and cares for the wife and kids. They have taken everything away from me with no real explanation and have not allowed me to pay bills.’

As a “little”, you no longer have any rights concerning your money/travel. The man can’t get his money and won’t be told why. If the bank waits long enough, do they just get to keep the money?

What’s additionally funny about this is I have an idea why they flagged Mr. Salama, information I gleaned from this article.

When a name is flagged as a match with watch lists, officials from various departments may get involved to determine whether it is the same person or whether the reason for the flag is even significant, according to U.S. officials.

Salama said one of the men convicted in the first World Trade Center bombings in 1993 was named Mohammed A. Salameh.

“It is a very common name,” he said. “This is laughable, just because my name is Mohammad Salama. If we look for somebody with the last name McVeigh, should we just arrest them and harass them? I really think this has nothing to do with me.”

Different Salama(Mohammad Ramadan Hassan Salama), different country, but considering the information sharing between UK and USA, seems to me that the name is part of the reason for the first Salama’s troubles.

  • Oh my goodness! The Pentagon is breaking the laws and lying about it!!!

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….

As I used to have taped to my telephones, 1966-73: “Don’t say anything on this telephone you wouldn’t say to J. Edgar Hoover”

The more things change, the more they remain the same.
